Wwyd re visit from ILs?

My PILs are due to visit today. They have been babysitting for my BIL's 4 DC this week as it's half term. BIL, his DW and DC have all had this D&V virus which seems to be doing the rounds. Not sure whether to postpone the visit today or if that's just me being overly cautious. We all had a stinker of a D&V bug in August and I don't want to repeat the experience.

For clarity, PILs don't actually have it, they've just been babysitting in a house where everyone does iyswim.

Def postponed. It's a virus! Even if they don't have symptoms they'll be incubating it and will pass it on. I wouldn't take the chance.

Post pone just in case, can you do following weekend?

Hmmm that was my thought really. We were planning a nice outing as well so that would need to be reorganised. We wouldn't lose out any money or anything.

DH disagrees with me and thinks I'm being a bit overly cautious.

I think everyone at BIL's house is better now tbf but I read on another forum that it can take 1-4 days for D&V to start after exposure?

I would definitely postpone, D&V bugs are so contagious that chances are if they don't have it they will be carriers.
I wouldn't want to take the risk.

And you are right about the incubation time, it can take up to a week for symptoms to start after exposure for some viruses.

I think I might agree with your DH, though.
It says online that the virus develops 12 to 48h after catching it, how long ago did your ILs babysit these other people with virus? NHS site says "A person with norovirus is most infectious from when their symptoms start until 48 hours after all their symptoms have passed, although they may also be infectious for a short time before and after this"
I'd say if it was over two days ago and they have no symptoms, you are probably bring cautious. If it was yesterday and have no symptoms, I'd probably be cleaning around and asking everyone to wash hands frequently.

Either way, you think of your family and do what's best.

I am an emetophobe & highly cautious about this type of thing. However, though my instinct would be to stay locked away, the rational part of me would say if it has been 48hrs+ since they were exposed to anyone with the bug, it is ok to see them. I would just limit contact & practice really good hand hygiene.

I think we'll postpone. It probably is overly cautious of me and I'm sure I'll get the odd eye roll from ILs, but since it's only a visit which we do fairly regularly and not an essential / one off, it's probably not worth the risk. We can easily do the fun outing another time.

Chances are we'll probably catch it from somewhere else now! But at least then I won't be thinking how stupid of us to have that fun day out instead of being sensible.

If your husband insists you stick to the plan I'd be telling him he's the one taking time off work to look after whoever is ill as you think it should wait. See what he thinks then.
