To ask how much you plan on spending on DCs at Christmas?

Snowflakes1122 · 28/10/2016 18:35

I ask because dc10 seems to have a lot of friends getting the iPhone 6 or 7 for Christmas. I'm talking 9/10 year old kids!

I was planning on spending £150 per child (we have 3 dcs)

What do you think is an acceptable amount to spend on your children at Christmas?

Oh and DD is having a revamped bedroom so we are buying a new bed etc. She is 10. She won't be getting an iphone!

dementedma · 29/10/2016 18:39

I agree that with older children,a lot of money does not equate to piles of presents.
Xbox game - £40
Bottle of perfume - £50
Watch - £50
Jodhpurs £20
Earrings £25

Best part of £200 for a few very small boxes!

Aeroflotgirl · 29/10/2016 18:44

Omg I must be Mrs Stingy, £150 for both kids aged 4.9 years and 9.5. They did not want a lot. Went through Argos catalogue, they picked a few things each. They have so much already, I pad, kindles, toys galore. Kids have too much nowadays.

OhTheRoses · 29/10/2016 18:56

What may need to be put out there and this isn't meant in a mean way, but if people are generally on a tight budget, then I think the massive pile of Christmas presents probably means a shed load more than if you aren't. there's a massive difference being able to go to shopping centre with a teenager who says "oh they're nice boots" and being able to say yes they are, do you want them or even "you had a new pair three months, ago, dream on" and those things being important and saved up for as part of the main event. If my dc didn't get holidays and school trips and other experiences, then actually yrs they'd probably have got bigger stuff at Christmas to make of for the big stuff they didn't get.

If you see what I mean in a clumsy sort of way.

greenfolder · 29/10/2016 19:09

I wrote it all down last year. £200 per child. Although 2 of them are actually adults and one is 8. They have no grandparents though and aunts and uncles have never bought for them. In the past they have had a lot less. Never ever been anything other than happy and grateful for what they get.

whoseafraidofnaomiwolf · 29/10/2016 19:09

Usual budget is £150 each for 4 teens.
I am quite Shock at some of the amounts mentioned on here - some of them feel obscene to me, but each to their own I guess.

LoisWooookersonsLastNerve · 29/10/2016 19:13

Those of you with a set budget, what do you do if your dc ask for one thing but it's over budget? DD has asked for an iphone 2 years in a row and hasn't got it. Dh thinks we,should just get it but I'm balking at the idea of an 800.00 phone for a seven year old. Hmm

manhowdy · 29/10/2016 19:20

Decent earner here. Spend absolutely bloody loads on my lovely kids and love every minute of it Grin

Chrisinthemorning · 29/10/2016 19:25

We have one DS who is 4. I don't work to a budget as such.
This year from us he is getting one main present around £50 (hopefully- RRP is £80 but I'm stalking the bargain thread). This will be his top hit on his Santa list.
He will get a sack of smaller bits eg play dough, books, clothes and a couple of smaller toys. Probably another £50 ish. I base this on the want need wear read thing.
Then a stocking - everything under £10, a fair amount from the pound shop etc but will still add up. Lots of this is stuff I would buy anyway eg character socks, pants, toothbrush. DH and I also have a stocking each to open.
I'd guess total spend £200-250.
I would expect as he gets older the spend will increase. I like to go a bit mad at Christmas but he gets a lot from others and it all has to be stored!

bimbobaggins · 29/10/2016 19:27

I have one ds, will probably spend about £200 give or take a few extra bits. Seperated from his father but he will probably spend the same. Don't have a big family so don't spend that much else

SusanneLinder · 29/10/2016 19:27

I spend what I can afford...end of.

BitchQueen90 · 29/10/2016 19:27

Whatever I can afford. No set amount but will be more this year as I'm working, last year I was on benefits. I start in October to spread it out a bit. Already bought DS a bike which is his main present.

I don't give a crap what other people spend on their kids and I don't see why other people do either. £50 or £5000, it's nobody else's business. Nobody should be made to feel bad for what they spend on their children.

MsJamieFraser · 29/10/2016 19:29

Lois you can get a iPhone5 brand new for £150, they are more than suitable for a 7 year old, alternatively what we did was buy our then 7 year old a iPod, it's everything what the iPhone is, except you cannot phone external numbers on it, however anyone with a iPhone (which most of me and our immediate family are) he could FaceTime them and also play games with them (even in Scotland and Australia with his cousins)... ds I think was £169 (32GB) and with screen protector and case another £20 from eBay.

Family could then buy him apple vouchers.

ToujeoQueen · 29/10/2016 19:30

£150 each for young dcs, £50 each for adult dcs.

RebelandaStunner · 29/10/2016 19:32

Around £300 each from us. Then lots of presents and a bit over £1k each in cash, cheques and vouchers from family some of which they bank (about £750).
Teenage wants aren't cheap but we have always spent similar.
DS is working so some of his are driving lessons. I love present shopping.

MsJamieFraser · 29/10/2016 19:32

Our then 6 year old, that should say, not 7, he's 7 now

SylvieB74 · 29/10/2016 19:33

I always want to wrap Christmas up within £1000, so now there's 3 of them it's less each.

An £800 iphone for a seven year old Shock. are you stark raving bonkers? My DD has an iphone 5, small, on contract for less than that over two years. It was entered after great thought. She's 18.

LoisWooookersonsLastNerve · 29/10/2016 19:39

Well no not bonkers as I said noGrin what's the 800.00 one then? Maybe I'm getting it mixed up with an iPad. I'm not into thingy bobs and gadgets.

LoisWooookersonsLastNerve · 29/10/2016 19:40

Will look into iphone 5 thanks.

feelingdizzy · 29/10/2016 19:49

About 250 each for my teenagers ,maybe more.I had a promotion at work this year,so for first time can do Christmas without stress( single parent ).
We're going away for Christmas as well ☺

HeCantBeSerious · 29/10/2016 20:16

I'm balking at the idea of an 800.00 phone for a seven year old.

That's fucking mental.

sofatrainer · 29/10/2016 20:18

Mine eldest reminded me today not to forget a selection pack, pyjamas, an annual, a book they don't want and Starbucks card. He said that anything else is a bonus and the only thing he will be disappointed with is if he doesn't get them as that's what makes Christmas.

LoisWooookersonsLastNerve · 29/10/2016 20:26

hecant I know! Apparently all her friends have iPhones. Who the hell do they need to phone at 7 Confused
