Sure I'll be flamed, but here goes....

When I was the equivalent of Yr 6 back in the late 1970s, teacher read us a story ("The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tyler". I recommend this for your children, it's great!) which led me on to read (by the same author) Gowie Corbie Plays Chicken. In which book, an American girl comes to the UK and introduces Trick or Treat. (which they mis-hear, and think is trickle treat)

That was my first introduction to it. I think my Dsis did it with a friend in the early 80s. Most people were mystified and alarmed.

FF to me having a DD. VERY pfb. NEVER gave her sugar. Warned against strangers. Tried to teach not to be grabby or greedy.
Why then should on one night a year that ALL go out the window and she harrass strangers for foods I don't want her to eat?????

I do have ONE exception to this (and for which if this is your experience, I understand the Biscuit's that'll no doubt come my way).... One year we went out with a friend, in a very small area, where everyone knew everyone, and they ONLY knocked at houses with a light on, and everyone who was knocked at was pleased to give a 'treat'. That was really sweet. The kids enjoyed the dressing up, and didn't want to knock on any doors which didn't have a pumpkin/light.

But generally, I think this is horrible, and goes against everything we teach our kids on every other day of the year, and isn't 'our' tradition in the first place!

Throw those biscuits at me for being a kill-joy! (I do have sweets in already in preparation. I promise I won't rant at children on Monday!)

Oh fuck off with the "it isn't our tradition" shite. How often do those of us who live in Scotland have to say the same bloody thing?! We've been doing it for centuries. I'll refer yet again to Robert Burns poem "halloween" written in seventeen fucking eighty fucking five!!!!!!!!!

If you don't want to join in then sit in your house in the dark chewing some sugar free smug self satisfaction. The rest of us will get on with having fun. Enjoy. Or not.

MitzyLeFrouf · 28/10/2016 00:15

Careful with the sugar free sweets though! The sweeteners have a very bowel loosening effect.

Not another Halloween is begging thread

It's not begging for food ffs! The DC don't stand on people's door steps like oliver sodding twist. It's fun children dress up knock on a few welcoming doors, are polite when people give them sweets. Seriously what is the problem??

Its been a pagan celebration before even the 'christian god' arrived on our shores.

Hardly some new fashion.
If you dont like it fine, dont keep flogging the dead horse. Its not going to stop because some people dont like it.

Leave it up to the rest of us who do like it and do it properly! Our village has a great time, loads of kids guising, decorated houses and millions of those 'horrendous' sugary sweets going around. They keep the kids going for months!

Roll on Monday night, I love seeing all the kids dressed up and hearing their terrible jokes, its a highlight of the year.

EveryDayIsASchoolDay · 28/10/2016 00:27

I've never been trick or treating. It wasn't something my family did. I didn't feel like I missed out. When I got my own house (before marriage and child) I used to have a Halloween party each year as I love costumes and, well, parties in general. Any excuse. My DC is nearly 7 and has never been round knocking on doors. He always has a costume but we go to a party or event instead. The kids that come round our way just come across as so grabby, greedy, bad-mannered and ungrateful.

whats with all the Halloween hate on Mumsnet? How many threads have we had now? I suppose your going to have Santa in the coming weeks too

You don't enjoy it Fine! Put up a no trick and treaters sign, don't carve pumpkins, dress up your DC. Or do Halloween craft shit that's your choice but many people enjoy a bit of fun, there's no harm in it.

My DC love trick and treating, we go to decorated houses they get hyper on sweets and then we come home and have some pumpkin pie and hot choclate while watching DC Halloween films-it's just nice!
