To want a new sofa??

When dh and I got married 9 years ago we also bought our home and were fortunate in that we came into some money which allowed us to furnish most of our house. We don't about £4000 in total on 2 sofas and an armchair for our living room.

I think we need to now redecorate this room as it is tired looking. I would like to re-paint and paper, new carpet, possibly new curtains and bookshelves (just Billy ones). I also think we should replace the sofas.

Dh thinks this is ridiculous as we spent so much money on them and if I am bored we should just re-upholster them. I think if we can afford to replace them
We should and the shape of them is what I want to be updated not just the colours/fabric iyswim, and I think it's a bit depressing if I have to live forever with sofas I chose nearly a decade ago .....what is the my jury verdict??

I am quite frugal, but id love to change our 8 year old sofas too...so yanbu

We have been married 20 years and have bought new sofas 4 times and are about to buy new ones. I couldn't live with the same sofas for years and years as fashions change so much.

I like to change them every 5 years or so as I get bored. I have always sold the old ones for a few hundred.

We don't spend more than about £1000 on each sofa, so it doesn't feel too extravagant.

Having said that, the shape of your sofas, OP, is gorgeous so I might consider recovering them - although I've had quotes for reupholstery and they have been extortionate.

Lol - we literally just took delivery of 2 of the one on the right yesterday in taupe!! There is a 40% off offer at multi york at the moment so may be worth pricing up new covers

To want a new sofa??

Shock

Sorry, I think replacing them after nine years is ridiculous too. Can't you just clean the covers or something?!

Bertucci · 28/10/2016 20:46

9 years? I would be beyond sick of them. It's not like a generation or 2 ago when people bought furniture to keep for decades.

Lesley1980 · 28/10/2016 20:46

I'm with you. If you are bored & you have the money then get a new sofa. Donate your old one or sell them.

My sofa is coming up for 4 years & im already thinking about replacing it. Spent £3000 thinking we'd have them a long time but constant cushion fluffing is driving me nuts. I've decided buy cheap & feel no guilt replacing them every few years.

I'm afraid I'm a cave dweller I get my sofas from charity shops, they have to be in good condition though. I am after one that looks and feels like a marshmallow at the moment. I would never spend 4k on a sofa but horses for courses if it makes you happy.

TaterTots · 28/10/2016 21:09

The shape looks great to me! I think when you've spent that amount I'd consider having just the teal one reupholstered and buying completely different cushions.

annandale · 29/10/2016 00:32

Christ this is depressing. I still thought my parents' sofa was pretty cool after 30 years, though it was trashed by then. Can't believe how we have been conditioned to think that stuff should just be thrown out because... because...

BlackeyedSusan · 29/10/2016 01:07

try the recovering option. just getting rid becasue you are fed up is a waste of money/resources.
