To think people should have breakfast BEFORE work?

candybeek · 27/10/2016 07:07

If you work a normal daily shift like 9-5 office hours, then I feel it's really odd people come in to work and immediately start pouring milk on their cornflakes or dashing to the canteen for a greasy fry up.
I'm in the minority at my work place that have breakfast at home before work.
I understand it if you work shifts etc but 9-5??

I find it really odd, what's next - people using the kitchen to cook their tea before they leave for work?

It's even worse as they bring their smelly breakfasts back to their desk so I have to inhale it all.

Am I on my own in this thought?

I'm not at work- I'm in a hotel restaurant in the Costa Del Sol. People around, eating and drinking everywhere- bastards Grin

Basicbrown · 27/10/2016 09:28

Against the law. Your employer has to schedule in breaks.

Bit like teaching then? A scheduled 'break' that you are always too busy to take. At least in my job I can move it.

I think you would like my job elodie. I know from 8 years of my life that it's better than yours.

Bitofacow · 27/10/2016 09:29

Anna - yes I eat out. I'm not really that bothered about food noises in general. But first thing in the morning, at my desk, I find it intrusive and unpleasant. I can't choose to move away because I have work to do ( or MN threads to reply to) I am forced to watch and listen when I really, really don't want to.

It's just rude.

elodie2000 · 27/10/2016 09:30

I'm going to start looking for an easier another job... One with 'flexibility' where I can munch away to my heart's content and start work late.

AnnaT45 · 27/10/2016 09:30

No, I'm not working Elodie. I'm BF my baby. Couldn't do that at the office, would upset people if she was having her breakfast at my desk Grin

MyGiddyUncle · 27/10/2016 09:31

Yeah me to Elodie.

I might look for a peace of piss job where I get 13 weeks holiday a year and still get to moan about my work.

Basicbrown · 27/10/2016 09:33

So do it elodie. There's a whole world out there. Interestingly enough not being able to eat during class wasn't the deciding factor for me, but we all have different triggers Grin.

elodie2000 · 27/10/2016 09:34

Basic: I think you would like my job elodie. I know from 8 years of my life that it's better than yours.
There I agree! You will know that my 'lack of understanding' comes from being in a job where it is often impossible to even go for a wee between the hours of 8.30-3.30 Blush

TBF to Elodie her job is much harder than mine. I will concede that.

Go for it giddy Grin

NoahVale · 27/10/2016 09:37

Giddy, I believe people are leaving in droves, the line of work Eloide is in. eating at a desk might be one of the reasons Wink

megletthesecond · 27/10/2016 09:38

It's annoying when they take all the milk for cereal. E-mails have been sent round at our place reminding them milk is only for drinks not big bowls of cereal.

I can't function without food in me so eat as soon as I'm up.

I think I need to!! There is another world out there! Smile I don't get to see it very often!!

Noah It might just be the deciding factor for me! Grin

Laiste · 27/10/2016 09:49

There's loads of jobs where you have to eat before you start or not for ages - so you just have to cope.

Most people in retail have to fit their breaks around who's on the shop floor and if you haven't eaten by the time the shop opens (8.30/9.00) and you're last on the break rota you could find you're forced to be having your 'breakfast' at 11am.

Anyone who works in a school can't just go and eat when they fancy it either. You get your breakfast down you before 8.30 or you don't eat until first break mid morning. Even then it's a rush to get to the staff room and back in time for the bell, so it's mostly a quick cupper and a biscuit!

Laiste · 27/10/2016 09:51

Oh i've x posted, The school issue has already been thrashed out Grin

EveOnline2016 · 27/10/2016 09:53

Surely banning breakfast at work would mean productively would be down due to people being hungry and not being able to concentrate.

elodie2000 · 27/10/2016 09:55

Eve I don't think anyone is banning breakfast! Just debating whether it should be eaten on the job!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 27/10/2016 09:56

YABU IMO.
I rarely have breakfast anyway because my stomach just doesn't "wake up" for food before around 10am. I don't have breakfast then, either, but do have morning tea. So when I worked, I always used to go to early tea break if I could (although it didn't matter that much) and that would be my first food of the day.

Trying to force food down before my stomach was ready for it would inevitably end up with me feeling quite sick. :(

SleepyHare · 27/10/2016 10:02

YABU I always have breakfast at my desk.

However I always have my lunch at my desk too and never end up taking a full lunch break so it's not like I'm taking the piss or wasting time.

I think if work allows it why not? There's no way I could eat before work!

mydietstartsmonday · 27/10/2016 10:14

Just had toasted bagel & scrambled egg for my breakfast at my desk as I go through my emails.... delish

Judydreamsofhorses · 27/10/2016 10:15

Not breakfast, but there's a woman I work with who comes in bang on the dot of her start time with wet hair, and then vanishes for 15 minutes to dry/style it (we have no flexible working at all) which always strikes me as taking the piss a bit. If she doesn't disappear off to the loo, she fills the office with stinky sprays.

SuperFlyHigh · 27/10/2016 10:16

I used to have granola and yogurt at my desk (whilst working) - told my bosses I was doing this - partly originally it was because I took my thyroid medication at night but then it just became more convenient to have it at work.

Now I am having porridge at home before I leave for work.

FlemCandango · 27/10/2016 10:17

God what fuss. In office based jobs where you are not facing the public and not required to be accounting for every moment. Then brekkie at your desk is pretty standard. I worked in London before I had children. I would pick up a coffee and a cream cheese bagel on the way into work as the thought of eating then commuting for an hour was v unappealing. I was working on projects no daily tasks as such and organised my own time like a grown up. As long as work was completed to schedule, and targets met if I was eating my breakfast at my desk at 8.15 or 9.15am was not important. Some days I would take lunch at my desk and others I may be out of office for 1.5hrs.

The way work in some areas of employment is changing, means we are encouraging more people to work from home, work flexible hours and do meetings over the phone or skype. Plenty of people will be productive while at home eating their breakfast in their PJ's and possibly stroking a cat. The way productivity should be measured is on results, but if you are finding smells troubling then perhaps the work environment you are in doesn't suit you. I found open plan offices distracting but individual offices or cubicles are isolating so it is swings and roundabouts.
