To think people should have breakfast BEFORE work?

If you work a normal daily shift like 9-5 office hours, then I feel it's really odd people come in to work and immediately start pouring milk on their cornflakes or dashing to the canteen for a greasy fry up.
I'm in the minority at my work place that have breakfast at home before work.
I understand it if you work shifts etc but 9-5??

I find it really odd, what's next - people using the kitchen to cook their tea before they leave for work?

It's even worse as they bring their smelly breakfasts back to their desk so I have to inhale it all.

Am I on my own in this thought?

I usually have my second breakfast at my desk Grin

I use that time to read my emails and catch up on what the day is going to bring.

Your workplace sounds rubbish OP. Why can't you even flex your hours by 30 mins Hmm

BuggerOffDailyMail · 27/10/2016 08:13

I think I'm just too bothered about my standards which is why I wouldn't want to be seen slacking off like others do at my work place.

Your judgy pants must be giving you the mother of all wedgies Hmm

I work 8-4:30. I arrive usually about 7:45/8ish and have fruit and Skyr at my desk while I do my regular morning tasks. Takes me about half an hour to eat it because I'm distracted by emails. You're actively encouraged to bring Breakfast to work with you at my offices because our boss firmly believes you're more productive after a healthy breakfast. I think most people here would skip breakfast in favor of an extra half hour in bed! There's even a breakfast cupboard with cereals and a fruit bowl for anyone who forgets to bring anything which is provided by the company.

I have an hour drive each way for work so I leave the house at about 6:45 as it is and I cant eat and drive at the same time!

If you're being clock watched constantly and your boss begrudges you 15 mins to eat a good breakfast, you're in the wrong job!

Also what about fag breaks? At least the 15 mins for breakfast is for something healthy...

Believeitornot · 27/10/2016 08:14

I'll add - with the dcs since they were babies we've always had breakfast together as a family. Me and DH have near full time/full time jobs.

yesterdaysunshine · 27/10/2016 08:16

The problem really is when people have both, and I'm not joking!

Schoolchildren around here have breakfast at home then breakfast at breakfast club.

No wonder there are so many fat children.

Basicbrown · 27/10/2016 08:17

You can be conscientious about your work and still have your eyes open. I call it multi tasking

Yeah bit like reading your emails while eating cereal?

candybeek · 27/10/2016 08:17

Thanks for pointing out the obvious ferretfred Smile

I think I need to let my standards ridiculous uptightness drop,

There OP - fixed it for you!

candybeek · 27/10/2016 08:18

You can read emails whilst you are in the canteen tho! And before anyone pipes in, my work place doesn't have company mobiles!

I could never eat breakfast really early. I never used to eat it at all. In the service industry you tend to get staff meals before midday so I'd eat that. I don't think it's a bad work ethic if you take 2 secs to shovel down a pastry or something.

candybeek · 27/10/2016 08:19

Probably right zoeturtle. Must take more breaks!

I get up and get 3dc ready for school, drop them off and rush to work so I usually eat breakfast about 10 am (porridge usually). Rarely eat lunch or even take a lunch break or finish on time. Luckily my work place is full of adults who realise that as a fellow adult I can manage my eating habits as suits me not some weird woman in the office who has rules about breakfast.

Queenbean · 27/10/2016 08:20

Will we see you drop off this thread dead on 9am OP?

Mammylamb · 27/10/2016 08:20

I eat breakfast at work most days. If some busybee, noseypants pulled me up on it, I would remind him / her of the many hours unpaid overtime I've worked at the company (a few years ago I was that busy at work that I are all my meals including dinner at my desk). Seriously, get on with minding your own business

candybeek · 27/10/2016 08:21

No, 8.45 actually! Ready to start at 9!

Motherofdragons I'm not weird, no need to be rude.

But you can think about what needs doing. Same could be said for the toilet really - and I bet you've noticed who goes most often Wink

candybeek · 27/10/2016 08:22

No basic, I'm not on toilet watch but that could be my next topic! ;)

So long as people are doing what they're paid to be there to do and pulling their weight I don't care about stuff like this. If someone is slacking and wasting time doing whatever, fine, they need to stop, but if they can multi task and get stuff done who cares

I've ate breakfast at work throughout my career. It's time efficient to do so whilst checking emails. I also put my face on as i check emails too. We get a lot of emails that just require reading and don't require your full attention.

I also eat and do make up if on the very rare occurrence I'm getting a train on a morning - mwhahahaha!

Basicbrown · 27/10/2016 08:23

Everyone has their quirks op. Everyone is weird in their own way....!

Aliveinwanderland · 27/10/2016 08:23

I have a small breakfast at home (usually dry cereal) at 7am but can't face much then. Takes me 45 mins to commute so I then have some fruit and yoghurt at my desk around 8am when I get in.

I teach so next opportinity to eat isn't until a 10 min break at 11am or lunch for 25 mins at 1:30.

Technically I don't have to be in school till 8:15 so arriving at 8am gives me time to eat something quickly before I start.

myownprivateidaho · 27/10/2016 08:24

I don't really care where people eat breakfast - i.e. if people "can't stomach" food at home and want to buy something when they get to their work that's fine. However, yes, of course if people are employed to work set hours they shouldn't be eating a meal during that time (other than lunch break!). I'd be unhappy if the staff at my workplace did this. It's different if people don't work set hours -- i.e. professionals who work until the work gets done rather than clocking off at 5 or whatever.

Queenbean · 27/10/2016 08:24

I really don't care about stuff like this.

My official starting hours are 9am but me, and all my team get in sometime between 9am - 10am. Some days I work until midnight. Some days I leave at 3pm to go to the pub all afternoon.

Luckily, I do the job I'm meant to do and am prepared to work flexible hours.

I'd hate to work for a company that had such fixed hours

candybeek · 27/10/2016 08:26

This thread has made me see I need a new job!

OP posts:
KittyAlPick · 27/10/2016 08:26

Breakfast at your desk wouldn't bother me - as long as it's relatively clean and dry like toast and fruit. Sloppy cereal and a fry up needing knives and forks not so much. But get those plates away immediately. Leaving dirty stuff around where paperwork can dip in the remains of your egg and beans - ugh!

Re the timing, a lot of people are paid to get a job done and a more productive couple of hours post breakfast could be better than plodding on for your allotted 9-5.
