Should I go into work today?

Need quick replies, not sure what to do as relatively new job (almost two months)
Been throwing up/feeling terrible since Sunday night, went in Monday and Tuesday they knew I was sick (kept running to toilet) on Tuesday once I didn't make it and vomitted all over myself, they said I should go home so I did. I then decided not to go on Wednesday either but sent them a message saying hopefully I would be in today. Today already vomited twice, feel like I've been punched in the stomach repeatedly. It's just I really haven't been there that long and I've had more time off already than anyone else (one day off for hospital and another for dentist) we're only a small team so it's very obvious too

Agree you should have stayed home initially as you will have given it to most off the staff. Have you considered food poisoning? Eat nothing for 24 hrs at least but drink plenty( no milk) to get rid of it. If you are still throwing up then phone GP. Poor you.Sad

No, you musn't go in! Also if you've been vomiting that long, you should seek medical attention because it's beyond the normal time frame for a bug. Hope you're better soon Flowers

Honestly, you don't need a doctor. Rest and take sips of water - if you are still throwing up by the weekend then yes, call 111.

e1y1 · 27/10/2016 07:40

No don't go in.

Of course, this may not apply to you, but just in case; at my last place, if you went off sick, and come back to work, and then had to go back off sick again (due to the same illness), it would be classed as 2x absence instances and would count as a trigger towards warnings etc (so you could essentially go up for a warning using the same illnesses.

Don't go back until you are completely better.

No stay off. I don't mind people coming in with the odd cold, but I'd be majorly unimpressed at someone coming in and vomiting everywhere and spreading a bug amongst the whole team. The golden rule at our place (NHS hospital ward so we have to be particularly careful not to bring bugs in) is you have to be free of any episodes of diarrhoea and / or vomiting for 48 hours before returning to work, and I believe this is standard in a lot of workplaces.

I hope you feel better soon. It sounds awful. x

Katastrophe13 · 27/10/2016 08:15

yes definitely do not go into work if you are still vomiting! And phone your GP, that's a long time to have a sickness bug. Phone your manager, say you are mortified at the time off, but that in light of what happened (you being sick on yourself) it's obviously in everyone's best interest that you stay at home until you are recovered. He would be an idiot to ask you to come in. Everyone gets ill, don't worry about the time off. Hope you feel better soon.

HermioneJeanGranger · 27/10/2016 08:19

Why would you even consider going into work if you were throwing up (pregnancy sickness aside)?!

Ilovenannyplum · 27/10/2016 08:19

Back to bed you go OP, hope you feel better soon Flowers

When I first started my new job, I honestly contracted every single bug/germ going. It was madness, my new boss wasn't best pleased with me but these these things happen, if you're ill. You're ill.

And I agree with PP, I wouldn't fancy catching a sickness bug from a colleague, i would have to have time off to get over it and if my DS caught it from me, he'd be off nursery so it would be more time off for me (unpaid) plus I would still have to pay the nursery so it would be an expensive few days!

PeachBellini123 · 27/10/2016 08:36

I thought you were going to say you had a cold! D&V definitley means stay at home.

Lorelei76 · 27/10/2016 10:18

re Noro, even NHS have updated their info to say it can last 5 days which def happened to me one time.

These employers are so awful.

wish you better soon OP.

Mishaps · 27/10/2016 10:19

Why might they want you to come in? You will just give it to everyone else and then there will be more people off work. Hope that you will be feeling better soon.

Katy07 · 27/10/2016 12:58

I thought this was going to be a 'I feel pathetic and can't be bothered to go in' thread and was planning on saying 'YABU, get to work!' but you're actually vomiting. Stay at home, go to bed, eat nothing (or whatever medical advice is generally), drink plenty, get better. If they've seen you vomit on yourself they know you're not taking the mick. And they're probably all at home now vomiting anyway Grin

Hope you are on the mend OP and resting up! BrewFlowersBrew

I had a similar experience when I started at a new company. My previous place were big on people dragging themselves in no matter how rough they were. Attendance was everything and absence rates were part of the overall performance measure of the team / dept. People would look awful and be coughing and spluttering in the office but 'battling on'
When I started at my new company I felt dreadful one morning but went in regardless. I felt incredibly foolish when my manager came up to me and said 'there are a lot of people in here that think you should be at home' - at that moment I felt sooooo embarrassed & wished I'd done the right thing and stayed at home!!
