Hallowe'en decorations at work...WTF

I work for a large financial company. This week various departments have been putting up Hallowe'en decorations. What is that about????

I am from the north of Scotland where there is strong tradition of guising at Hallowe'en and it was one of the highlights of my year as a child - so I have no problem with kids celebrating Hallowe'en.

I just find it weird that adults in a organisation want to put up decorations (over a week too early!) in a child-free zone.

Is it just me?

World's gone mad. In an adult environment, I don't get it.

An office I used to work in did this a few days before Halloween. Each team decorated their bank of desks and paid a couple of quid for the privilege, a senior manager then judged which team had the best decorations and they got a huge tin of sweets or biscuits. The funds raised went to that year's chosen charity. They did the same thing at Christmas and had other things going on during the year like quizzes and fantasy football leagues.

All my workplaces have done it! It's just a bit of fun.

My workplace does it (not just Halloween either).

If it's not interfering with work getting done, then why not? Do you also decorate at Christmas?

This is the first year I have seen the presence of Halloween before September is even out. Lots of houses with outdoor decorations up since the end of September. Even the local church has decorations on the information sign thingy I remember when I was young and Halloween started and finished on 31st. 'Twas magic and the illegal indoor fireworks my DM bought were brill

God. Some people would only be happy if we all wore grey and had no fun whatsoever.

'Over a week early'? It's hardly draping tinsel over the Easter eggs.

Unless you're being asked to stay late to help decorate or the decorations are somehow getting in your way, I can't see the problem.

I agree with you OP, the meaning of the event has been taken over by consumerism.

I could never get excited over Hallowe'en, I mean the decorations aren't pretty or twinkly are they, It's all cobwebs and spiders.

It's not the event here like it is in the States do I'm with you OP, daft really.

My lady company did that, we all had to dress up too, wonder if it's same place. They were worse than children at hallowe'en!

What's the problem? We'll dress up and decorate pumpkins after work on Monday. Adults in a professional environment, no child in sight. It's just a bit of fun, it's not compulsory to join in. No different from putting decorations up at Christmas.

They are only decorations, they arent stopping anyone working I presume.
Its a bit of fun, lighten up the working day. I would love it.

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad that I'm not the only person who thinks this is a bit odd. I am starting to think that I am in the minority and I'll try to be a little less grumpy about it.

StillStayingClassy I think you have got to the bottom of this - I don't find the decorations particularly attractive - I do like Christmas decorations and don't have a problem with office being decorated then.
