Stopping colouring my hair

I'm 39 and my roots are almost entirely white/grey. I was born with dark brown hair and have maintained that colour since I started going noticeably grey in my early 20s. Am now considering letting it grow out to my new natural colour - white! WWYD?

I like my grey, and do do other people, I get lots of complements. I prefer the the texture it was before though, so i use lots of product on it.

A friend of mine stopped using colour by starting on one side, leaving it natural, while dying the rest, leaving a but more natural each time, so it did not grow out from the roots if yswim.

Yes- do it ! I stopped colouring May 2015 and it's almost all grown out now. I get compliments on the silver, believe it or not. It helps that, as a pp has said , the youngsters are dyeing their hair silver. I am older than you ( 48 ) but wish I had done it earlier.

When growing it out just brazen it out. I have collar length hair and I used to tie back the top part for work to expose the roots and make it look less two-tone and more intentional. It is horrible for a while and my hair grows so slowly. If you have a short style it would be easier. My hair is in better condition now and there are lots of lovely brightening products to enhance the silver tones and the shine.

Go for it, you won't regret it OP.

Tootsiepops - Exactly ! I am glad to look 48. Plenty of folks don't get to be that age. I like to look the age I am and I think it can also look ageing to have dark hair with paler facial skin tone.

If I dyed my hair my natural colour Id look awful , it was a very dark brown when I was younger.
I took a reaction to dark and red dyes a few years ago and started to bleach it instead.
I went grey in the summer but then bleached it again and immediately regretted it.
I have a very short pixie atm, I keep attacking it to cut the colour out Grin
The front if my hairline is pure white, it gets darker as it goes back, this makes its a bit patchy looking, but I'm going to grow my top layers down.
I get nothing but compliments.
I'm 48 and happy to look my age.

This was in the summer before I dyed it again. It's actually more silver now even though there is only a few months difference

Love my silvers. I'm 46, and happy to be so. I'm a cancer survivor. I'm happy to be grey and alive !

Thanks, really inspirational stories conker and coco! My next step is to stop the blonde and let the very silver come through. I went lighter originally as my eyebrows no longer matched my hair. Originally my hair was nearly black, the top and front is very silver but underneath is still quite dark. I think my hair will be in better condition once I stop the blonde, really.

I think there are some very sexist undertones to the way society thinks about grey hair. A bloke going grey is thought of as distinguished, and in many cases it's considered sexy, even.

But a woman going grey is in many cases treated as an old crone, told they are not caring about their appearance, even if the hair is well kept, etc. As more women embrace grey hair it shold get better, but it's going to be a while before going grey is something that doesn't warrant any comment. Women are still pressured to look young in a way that men aren't.

I'm a week past 27 and jealous! my hair is naturally dark brown but also very naturally dry and super frizzy curly. But i feel more "me" and confident with it pink or blue etc. The bleaching process frazzles my hair, because i have to 2 or 3 times, and the sheer amount of leave in conditioners, split end sealers, oils, root strengtheners etc i have to put it in every wash is pretty expensive, not to mention i'm having to be super careful this time around as last time i bleached a few too man times and about an inch from my scalp it started breaking, not just a strand here and there, but in clumps of a good 30 strands, left me with some sections shoulder length, but on both sides above my ears it was just an inch long. Thankfully i could get the majority in a pony tail in a comb over type sense so i could go out and not look totally stupid but its taken 2 year to grow back.... And now i've got bored of brown and done it again! Having naturally white or grey hair i can easily shove a £1.50 semi permanent bright colour on that seals in for ages with all my leave in treatments wouldbe ideal .
