To think David Cameron must feel extremely regretful

Discussion with the in laws over Sunday lunch.
Me: Cameron must be mortified that he called the Brexit referendum to silence the right wing Eurosceptics in the Tory party.
Inlaws: nooooo! He is a man of principle and he did what he believed was right.

I cannot believe anyone other than my crazy inlaws thinks Cameron was wise.

Millions (not a few thousands) but MILLIONS of people voted for UKIP a single policy party. The conservatives have ALWAYS been divided with as many Tory voters voting for eurosceptic Tory MPs as voting for pro- European ones. The Tories have NEVER been decisive on this issue so they asked the electorate to decide. The Tories TOLD everyine that if elected they would offer a referendum. They were elected. So they did what they said they were going to do and called a referendum and the vote was leave (despite it not being what Cameron himself believed). Surely this is the absolute example of a what a democratic process should be? (And I say this as a committed Remain-er!)
I can absolutely understand critism, even hatred, of Cameron et al government, austerity policies etc but I'm baffled at the critism of a politician and party reacting to a significant growing minority's view that is shared by half their own party - offering the chance for everybody to have a say - being voted in on that pretext and then actually doing as they promised and that been critised because the result was not what some people wanted?
So even though I absolutely do not agree with Brexit, or pretty much any other Tory policy of the last 8 years; no I don't think your PIL are crazy because this is what democracy means - you don't get to just pick the bits you like.

"What a catalyst you turned out to be, loaded the guns then you run off home for your tea"

Eton Rifles, 1979.

Paul Weller for president - he foresaw it all ! David Cameron = vapid, destructive arsehole

SooBee61 · 23/10/2016 19:06

I imagine he doesn't give a shit, otherwise he wouldn't have run away from his mess like a fucking coward.

Well said! I despise him for the way he ran away so fast, and even resigning his seat as an MP.

midcenturymodern · 23/10/2016 19:10

I think he is an entitled child playing with peoples lives to satisfy his own sense of importance.

My mother thinks he is a political genius, and GO was a fantastic chancellor. She thinks it was the job of the brexiters to have a plan for leave, rather than the actual PM who called the referendum. She also thinks Thatcher is great for smashing the unions, SATs are needed to give children a good education and grammar schools will end inequality. She's not big on research or fact or stats.

If this is democracy it leaves a lot to be desired. Vote leave promised money to the NHS (not going to happen), access to single market without freedom of work and movement (not going to happen), Turkey imminently joining the EU (not going to happen), get a deal like Canada (their deal had just fallen through), trade outside EU (we already could), control our borders (we always had control of non EU immingration, but TM was incapable of dealing with it), stop us being in an EU army (we had power of veto so would never have had to). I could go on. If we cannot fight against a decision based on lies, then I don't believe we live in a democracy.

Thefishewife · 23/10/2016 19:17

Just think if corbyn was more able he would of Been able to mobilise the other party's and stop it

Personally I wanted a vote I don't want the Germans running the uk I have not voted merkel in and I don't want junker the drinker as he's known in the eu because of his drinking having a bloody say in anything that takes place on sovgrin soil

TheNaze73 · 23/10/2016 19:19

How anyone can call him the worst PM ever having lived through 13 years of Blair & Brown then they must have issues

VladmirsPoutine · 23/10/2016 19:20

fishewife comments like yours make me wonder if we should actually look into banning certain people from voting in the first place Hmm.

Thefishewife · 23/10/2016 19:20

I voted leave I want freedom of movement just not freedom to claim

fishewife comments like yours make me wonder if we should actually look into banning certain people from voting in the first place hmm.

And sneery comments like yours are why I voted leave because you think you better and more informed than Somone like me I know how the good dam eu has effect my family and I want no more thank you,

You remoners haven't got your own way as usual so stamping your feet and sneering at the working class I am odds on your a corbyn supporter to 🙁

user1471448556 · 23/10/2016 19:27

Fishewife - I can understand you not wanting people to come here and claim, but remember that EU immigrants make a net contribution to this country. Many of my friends are from the EU and without exception they are hard working tax payers, who value education and whose children in turn strive to do well in school. If you want to look for benefit claimants who are too lazy to work they are far more likely to be British born.

ToastDemon · 23/10/2016 19:29

Vladimir I rather tend to agree with you. Depressing really.

missyB1 · 23/10/2016 19:33

He won't give a flying fuck! Can't stand the weasel!

FarAwayHills · 23/10/2016 19:34

OP my ILs are of the same opinion. Apparently Europe is going to fall apart any minute and then it will be all rainbows and unicorns hereHmm

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 23/10/2016 19:36

fishewife, you did a wonderful job there of illustrating the Brexiteer stereotype.

CurlySusanFox · 23/10/2016 19:37

Is this what people talk about over Sunday lunch ShockConfused how incredibly boring

Silverthorne · 23/10/2016 19:38

When the Brexiters admitted that their claims were bogus (£340million to NHS etc), how can this be considered democracy?

OP posts:
LaurieMarlow · 23/10/2016 19:41

I think he regrets it for selfish reasons in that it's torpedoed his reputation. The idea of him being a man of principal is the funniest thing I've read all day.

EleanorRigby123 · 23/10/2016 19:42

Pretty sure that both he and his cronies recognise that what they have done represents the abject failure of an entire political generation. They recklessly gambled the future of the UK in the short term i terests of the Conservative Party and lost. They have left the UK and Europe in a hopeless mess - and we will all pay the price. Cameron's millions will cushion him bur I hope he goes down in history as the worst PM we have ever had.

JockTamsonsBairns · 23/10/2016 19:43

@thefishewife - in what way has the "goddamn EU affected your family"?

cardibach · 23/10/2016 19:52

'CurlySusan' I think attitudes like that have got us in this mess. If you don't talk about politics how can anyone know about it r test out their opinions? Politics is far from boring and affects everything in your life. Grow up a bit and face your responsibilities as an adult!

CurlySusanFox · 23/10/2016 20:01

PahahahhahH

Silverthorne · 23/10/2016 20:06

Curly
What do you talk about over Sunday lunch?

OP posts:
kittybiscuits · 23/10/2016 20:08

A psychopath does not feel mortification.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 23/10/2016 20:16

God knows what he thinks to be honest.

52% of voters voted leave do presumably those 52% think he is great for giving them the chance to state that preference.

I am (vaguely) young, over educated, middle class and am not friends with any racists. As a result I know very few leave voters though so I don't really know what they think.
