To rehome kittens because of fleas and new baby?

Roonster87 · 23/10/2016 16:53

Our 2 kittens are 6 months old and I took them to be neutered in the week and to my surprise was told they have fleas (they're indoor pets).

Bought the vet recommend Advocate treatment and spent yesterday and today hoovering the house within an inch of its life, and hot washing what we can...but looking online it looks like fleas are a bastard to get rid of, and I'm getting worked up about it.

Not sure whether I'm just being extra sensitive and worrying over nothing because I'm pregnant and I've had the little flea bastards on my clothes today and got me itching like mad. But, AIBU to consider getting my kittens rehomed due to our new baby coming in the next 4 months?

I know fleas aren't going to be a problem forever, I just don't know how persistent the flea buggers are going to be to get rid of and not sure how much of an extra stress it will be once baby is here. I love my kitties but can't bare the thought of fleas biting my new baby.

AIBU? Not sure whether my concerns are justified, or if I need have a word with myself and chill the fuck out. Blush

They're just fleas. They don't spread disease or anything. They're annoying, sure, but not dangerous.

Just treat the kittens, maintain general hygiene and have a bit of a spray with flea spray. Keep it away from the baby and kittens though as permethrin is toxic to cats and shouldn't be inhaled by humans.

Meadows76 · 23/10/2016 17:09

Rehoming isn't the issue, it's getting them and not giving basic care that annoys me about these things

OP sorry but you sound bonkers. Animals are not just a commodity to be chucked away at your convenience. The flea problem is treatable. Get rid of the fleas and keep your cats.

Meadows76 · 23/10/2016 17:11

They're just fleas. They don't spread disease or anything. They're annoying, sure, but not dangerous.. They do bite people. Have a look at some images of flea bites on ankles and then say that's just 'annoying'

neonrainbow · 23/10/2016 17:15

Poor bloody kittens. You're just looking for an excuse to get rid of them.

MatildaTheCat · 23/10/2016 17:19

When your PFB first comes home with nits, and they will, will you rehome them? Or just swear loudly about all the bloody persons in the world and apply the appropriate treatment?

Fleas, nits, moths, slugs, the fecking bastards are everywhere.

And you've got four months to sort out. Get. A. Grip.

GahBuggerit · 23/10/2016 17:20

yes rehome while they stand a chance of going to a good home.

if youre genuinely unsure if yabu about fleas, who dont do any harm except cause a bit of an itchy spot for 3 mins, then youre definitely not cut out to be a pet owner.

MatildaTheCat · 23/10/2016 17:21

Bloody PESTS, not persons. [autocorrect blush]

Bumbleclat · 23/10/2016 17:25

Fleas are a fucking nightmare and nearly caused me to have a breakdown in our last house.

We all repeatedly had worms, were covered in sore spots from the bites, couldn't sleep because of the bastard things always biting.

We paid £150 for a company to come and spray the whole house with a horrible toxic substance, when we were allowed back in our house, there were half dead butterflies all over the carpet.

A few weeks later the eggs (which are impossible to kill) all hatched and we had another onslaught so had to pay a further £50 for more of this professional service to come and spray the house.

Basically YADNBU at all get rid of the buggers.

We religiously de-flead our cat and she still caught them and it was just disgusting, she used to beg us to flea comb her and the comb was just full of bright red fleas and blood I couldn't eat anything because I felt there were fleas everywhere- it was awful.

They eventually went but when we moved house we had to get a new hoover because there were so many flea eggs in our old one I don't want to risk starting the cycle up again.

NEVER GETTING ANOTHER CAT AGAIN!!

Roonster87 · 23/10/2016 17:28

Thanks all. 👍

I've had a word with myself and I'll chill the fuck out now. I have been treating them with frontline since getting them, and only just found that it's next to useless.

Will get myself some of that indorex asap.

People are giving you a hard time. Try and rise above it.

It sounds like you are regretting becoming a pet owner. There is no shame in that. Pets aren't for everyone. And whilst fleas can be treated it is a pain and expensive and I would have been very distressed if my babies had been bitten by fleas.

Contact Cats Protection straight away. I am sure they will have no problem rehousing two cute six month kittens who have already been spayed (and well done on that, lots of supposed animal lovers are not that responsible.)

MistressMolecules · 23/10/2016 17:28

I considered very seriously rehoming our cat because of fleas. We have had the cat for 6 years, we regularly flea treated her (frontline) and a flea collar and she still got fleas and they multiplied so quickly - we went from not noticing anything to the baby who was toddling about covers in bites which then became swollen and blistered (the rest of us were fine bar one or two bites) she still has a scar on her arm from it as she reacted really badly. We used room sprays etc to no avail ended using advocate and getting pest control in twice over a four week period. The only reason I didn't rehome the cat is it would have upset the eldest who was going through a really tough time.

SoupDragon · 23/10/2016 17:29

Advocate on the cats, Indorex on the carpets and soft furnishings etc. Job done.

We had an infestation when the pets were out of the house for a fortnight and we discovered that Frontline was shit. It was sorted in less than a week.

Pigeonpost · 23/10/2016 17:31

Frontline is a bag of shit. They shouldn't be allowed to sell it.

RueDeDay · 23/10/2016 17:31

Roonster I always go to the vets and ask for the 'latest greatest', whatever that is. It's more expensive but the fleas won't be immune to it yet. Worth it, to me. And the three month treatment I got last time has been fab and will probably see them through the winter.

SuperFlyHigh · 23/10/2016 17:31

Not going to pile on you OP but think whether you want these cats for life!

You have to worm and flea them regularly as the two often go hand in hand.

You really should have thought about fleas etc before you got the kittens and not just have thought oh they're two cute bundles of fluff!

Thanks Bumbleclat, sorry you had to go through that what a nightmare. it's reading those sorts of horror stories that have gotten me concerned, but given the other responses I've got, I'm going to hope those instances are less common.

All these people saying it easy to get rid of fleas.

I fleas my cat every 4 weeks. He passed away 5 months ago. I have no other pets and I am still being bitten by fleas and finding live ones!

I've boil washed everything and sprayed the whole house with Indonesia about 4 times.

It's driving me crazy. I found a flea on my BED about 3 weeks ago and did it all again.

Madratlady · 23/10/2016 17:38

Yabvvu you get fleabombs and do the entire house. I presume you have Flea treated the cats now? Do it monthly for a good few months just to be sure.

And next time you are thinking of getting a pet maybe don't if you are willing to get rid 4 months down the line because an issue arrives.

SansMarbles · 23/10/2016 17:38

Daft auto correct. That should say Indorex.

I will never get another pet in my life.

Op front line is shit.

Iv just had to my house... get powder that will kill the eggs and fleas.. sprinkle it EVERYWHERE even your bed. Leave for at least 30 minutes hoover do this every other day for at least two weeks thens once a week when gone.

Get some flea bombs to do the every room then repeat two weeks later.

Make sure ya cat is done.. you ccan get tablets to give tonyour animal that means as soon as a flea bites it it will die its expensive but very sufficent.
