AIBU about a suspected flu/chest infection

Sorry if I put anyone off their coco pops this morning

I currently have a temp of 39.9 and have for the past three days, I've been coughing up yellow phlegm and am genuinely in quite a bit of pain (as is everyone who has chest infections)

My DP is adamant that I call 111 today and get an out of hours appointment, but I think it's not needed.

Obviously if this was my child I would have been straight to the doctors, but as a fully grown woman I think ok survive x

I agree with your DP and would get it checked out.

The temperature is the clincher here. After 3 days and no improvement, I would definitely see a doctor with those symptoms.

Are you normally fit and well? Provided you don't have an underlying condition that affects your immune system or respiratory system, I would be prepared to take paracetamol and rode it out over the weekend.

I would keep an eye on it and if things got worse I'd head to the ooh gp and go to the normal gp on Monday if you still aren't any better. I also currently have a chest infection and can be prone to them.they can hang about for a bit.

An infection like that probably needs antibiotics. Perfectly healthy people can deteriorate very quickly too, op. I've seen plenty had to come in septic because they left it too long.

With a temperature that high for three days straight you need to be seen today.

You could 'just' have a chest infection that you can fight off in a week or so without antibiotics. On the other hand you may not be able to fight it off and it could end up more serious.

My usual rule of thumb is three or more days of either no improvement in symptoms or worsening symptoms, along with either a temp lower than 36 (for me, my temp drops when I'm ill) or higher than 38 (for the dcs) then I try to get a gp appointment.

Thank you ladies, I'm usually very healthy so didn't want to overreact & get laughed out the surgery, I'm going with the majority, I've just had some more paracetamol, if it does not lower my temp I will call.

I must say my DP has been amazing the past few days, it's amazing how he's learnt to cook in such a short time. Could get used to this treatment

Probably best to call 111 anyway. They have always helpful when I have phoned them and they will be able to tell you if an appointment is needed.

Yes I've been taking paracetamol or lemsips almost every 4-5 hours, but temp never goes below 38.9

I would call 111 as temp still high. I had something similar a couple of years back and it took me 6 weeks and 2 courses of ABs to get over it. My GP was lovely, I had booked for a telephone appointment but as soon as I told him my temp was 39.9 he said he would do a home visit. He said I had 'crackling' in my lungs and would send me for a chest x-ray if I didn't improve after a couple of days on stronger ABs.

If you are ok to take it, regular ibuprofen will also lower your temperature and can be taken with paracetamol. Make sure you have something in your stomach beforehand, half a slice of toast is sufficient. If you have asthma or stomach problems though, steer clear. GP will definitely not think you're being soft with a high fever and green spit
