To ask you all to remind me how safe flying is?

I bloody hate flying. Have a 4 hour flight tomorrow and am feeling ok now but will get nervous when on the plane. DD is also nervous but luckily DH and DS love it so we won't all be gibbering wrecks. I have read Allen Carrs flying book and one called flying with confidence which have made me feel better but still have a hint of dread in my stomach!

I've been a nervous flyer too. I went on a course which helped a bit (when one of the speakers was asked what had been his worst moment, he thought for a moment and said it had been when he was in the toilet when they hit turbulence and he peed down his leg...).
But what really helped was coming back from Iceland last year on an airline that one of our friends is a pilot for. I was thinking how I wouldn't be nervous if that person was flying, then realised that all the pilots have the same training, and they all have homes and families they know they're going to return to...
Honestly, you'll be fine. Flying is the safest form of transport. I agree with seeing if you can get a small dose of diazepam, though - you don't necessarily need to take it, but just knowing you have it if you need it can be a great help. I did use it a couple of times when I was at my worst, and it really helped me.

When you get to the airport, the most dangerous part of your journey will be over znd you can relax.

Thanks all. All these comments really help. Too late for diazepam as we leave in the morning. Prefer not to take drugs anyway. Will have a sneaky vodka or two I think!

Reading with interest as I'm flying ( a very short flight) on Sunday) I hate flying only done long haul three times ( Canada) and once short haul in my teens. I normally get very stressed before flying, but am trying to put this flight out of my mind until I'm actually there, helped as I only booked it a few weeks ago. Never flown sober before but as this is an early morning flight I will be doing ( unless I totally lose my nerve!!) I just keep thinking it's many people's jobs every day, one of the safest forms of travel and as others have said all those bumps and movements are just the same as I would feel in a car. Good luck tomorrow, you will be fine ( easier said than done I know!!)
