To be sick of how "big" a thing Halloween is now?

When I was little which wasn't SO long ago, Halloween was a bit of apple bobbing and a few teenagers with coats pulled over their head asking for change and some egg throwing. Supermarkets were stuffed with tacky shite and Halloween wasn't seen as a massive night out for people to get pissed and having a Halloween party was quite rare.

This interpretation of Halloween is a pure American import. Whats next ffs UK thanksgiving or something.

prepared buckets of water for trick or treaters

I love Halloween, it's the one time of year we have a huge party. Everyone that comes has to look like twats dress up. It's all a bit of fun imo

TheNaze73 · 17/10/2016 15:37

YANBU, it's a load of American bollocks, its begging & it's shit.

gillybeanz · 17/10/2016 15:40

Nobody bothered when I was little there was more done for Bonfire night with displays in parks and penny for the guy for about a week before.

I'm planning things for dd to take back to school after half term as it falls when she is at school this year. They'll decorate their dorm and play a few tricks on one another, but it will be a normal day like any other.
They do have a little bonfire on the 5th though.

AugustRose · 17/10/2016 15:42

I'm always surprised when people say that. I am 42 and from the North East, on the estate I lived in most of the children dressed up and went trick or treating. My dad carved swedes (3 of them, poor him!) for lanterns and we had sweets, apple bobbing and party tea - that was from when I was about 5 or 6 and we were told to avoid the houses the elderly people lived in and only go to houses of people we knew.

I love halloween, it's my favourite time of year.

Sparklingbrook · 17/10/2016 15:43

Yay begging has been mentioned. Grin

Except how someone offering you a sweet is begging I don't know. Confused

butterfliesandzebras · 17/10/2016 15:43

Are you seriously looking back at teenagers throwing eggs with nostalgic fondness??

I had actually forgotten that that used to happen. But now you've reminded me, I have to say I much prefer the fun party style Halloween that we have now.

Hippodisk · 17/10/2016 15:44

yabu. I love how big Halloween has gone. it's nice for the children, nobody is forcing you to participate.

BlancheBlue · 17/10/2016 15:47

butterflies I am nostalgic for a time when shit american culture didn't dominate the UK

BlancheBlue · 17/10/2016 15:48

sparkling as you are asking for the sweet

redexpat · 17/10/2016 15:48

I think its one of those things that americans do better than us. Theres an unspoken rule that if you dont have a pumpkin outside then youre not playing and shouldnt be disturbed.

Hippodisk · 17/10/2016 15:53

american culture hardly dominates the UK Hmm

cosmicglittergirl · 17/10/2016 15:54

YABU. I love Halloween, it's something fun to do between summer and Christmas and if you don't like it you can ignore it. I find Valentines annoying, but don't begrudge others the fun of it. Americans do festivals in a way I'm quite envious of.

LagunaBubbles · 17/10/2016 15:57

YABU. Dont like it - fine. But others do so leave it to people who do enjoy it , whats the big deal?

Charlesroi · 17/10/2016 16:00

We used to do Halloween when I was a kid, and that was a very long time ago
We'd have a little tea party, get dressed up (usually as witches or ghosts), have swede lanterns etc. We'd go round the neighbours houses and they might give us a couple of sweets or a few coins. Not a modern thing at all!

wigglesrock · 17/10/2016 16:00

I love American culture - it's music, food, films, theatre, playwrites, sport, authors, painters, I don't find Halloween shite. I'm 42, it was a big thing when I was younger and still is now (I'm in NI). Kids are off school for the week, lots going on, walks, fayres, kids days out etc. I find the yapping on about Halloween to be on the tedious side, I don't celebrate Guy Fawkes/Bonfire night and I could live without Easter but I get that other people like it.

P1nkP0ppy · 17/10/2016 16:02

I loath it. Having eggs/flour/gloss paint thrown at the houses and cars isn't funny.
nobody is forcing you to participate I don't, hence mindless vandalism inflicted on those who don't, including my very elderly neighbours. 21 houses attacked here last year.
😡😡

Lindy2 · 17/10/2016 16:08

We didn't celebrate Halloween when I was a child. We didn't do very much for Easter or Christmas either really. It's a shame because I would have loved too. Now I have my own children we really have fun with traditions and celebrations.
They have a great time dressing up at Halloween and seeing their friends dressed up. We only visit houses where people have put up decorations and I've never seen any egg throwing or trouble of any kind. If someone doesn't want to join in there won't be any decorations up and they won't be disturbed. I have no problem at all with people who don't want to join in, but why should they have a problem with people who do like it? It has UK origins too. It's not just a US thing.

Sparklingbrook · 17/10/2016 16:22

There's no asking involved. Decorate house/porch doorbell goes, sweet is offered.

Well that's how it works in these parts anyway.

BlancheBlue · 17/10/2016 16:43

You are seriously deluded if you think it is only decorated houses that are knocked at. Especially with older unsupervised kids.

People just love buying decorations tat.
YANBU.

Sparklingbrook · 17/10/2016 16:46

As I said that's how it works around here.

BoinkAlongQuietly · 17/10/2016 16:48

YANBU load of American bollocks. I hate the shops being full of the tat.

bah humbug (for Halloween of course)
