To do a straw poll on whether you're happy with where Brexit is heading?

Bearbehind · 16/10/2016 16:57

This isn't about the whys and wherefores of how we got here but, since no one I speak to IRL is happy with the path Brexit is leading us down and I've just seen a poll in the Metro strongly in favour of abandoning Brexit it got me wondering how wide spread it is.

This isn't supposed to be an argument thread or even how you voted, just Are you happy heading towards a hard Brexit

Yes or No

The brain drain is the European academics who, quite understandably, don't want to risk staying in an environment that has declared itself so anti-European and, frankly, so xenophobic. It includes the PhD students who now kno that they won't apply for UK academic posts. It includes the doctors who don't want to stay around in an NHS that treats its doctors like shit, and is now saying it wants more British doctors to treat like shit. These are just examples from areas of work with which I am acquainted. They could be replicated in many other spheres. And it's already happening. Academics are already leaving the sinking ship.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/10/2016 20:32

The brain drain is also UK academics who can see the writing on the wall, esp if they rely on European funding.

Chikara · 16/10/2016 20:46

Ha! Ha! Jojo - quite right. Would never normally do this but got so sick of the "uneducated, Northern, BNP-voting" stereotype for anyone who isn't threatening to leave the country!

It is inaccurate and dismisses those who disagree with the Remainers as irrelevant.

I know may people who voted OUT and who are happy with the result who don't fit the stereotype. And most think there will be opportunities.

As for MN being representative of society as a whole - of course it isn't!!
It has very few men on it for a start.

The majority of users are mothers. Few teens/early twenties are on here, few elderly people are on here.
It shuts down anyone whose posts might be deemed racist, sexist, disablist or ageist or who use the "wrong" terminology, and that would be a number of people.

It is skewed towards the office workers/professionals and the "caring professions" rather than the low-skilled, heavy industry workers and builders and plumbers.

Those with low level of literacy or poor command of English don't often post.
Also anyone who is not really a big internet user wouldn't use it - so no, not representative.

DrDreReturns · 16/10/2016 20:46

One of my academic friends has left a UK University for a post in Denmark. Mainly due to Brexit.

DesignedForLife · 16/10/2016 20:47

No. Pretty terrified TBH.

whyohwhy000 · 16/10/2016 20:56

No, but I voted remain. Marmitegate is proof that our economy/country is going to be doomed.

This is probably what happened:

  1. Oops
caroldecker · 16/10/2016 20:57

Yes

The Remain side also did not know what they were voting for either. The EU has changed a lot over time and will change more in the future.

sohardtothinkofanotherusername · 16/10/2016 21:06

why those post-referendum searches could just as easily been done by remainers. I have met many uninformed remainers, and some who really do believe that we are no longer in Europe.

sohardtothinkofanotherusername · 16/10/2016 21:12

Like this one, for example, who can't distinguish between the EU (organisation) and Europe (continent).

Chikara · 16/10/2016 21:12

why - that sort of attitude is one reason why we had a referendum in the first place.

All the people I know who voted, (IN and OUT and two who spoilt their ballot papers in protest), researched the issues widely.

TheElementsSong · 16/10/2016 21:21

Good grief why there's no need for such sweeping comments!

Bear I think you already know how I feel but while I'm here:

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO Grin

SallyMcgally · 16/10/2016 21:25

True, Errol, it's UK academics too. And Canada eager to welcome the international students we're deterring, who then won't be as likely to stay on for postgraduate work and post-doc collaboration. And so it goes. We'll end up with a hugely expensive education system and nobody who wants it, because all the exciting, innovative research will be happening elsewhere. But at least we'll have cut the numbers of foreigners and taken back control.

happyvalley4 · 16/10/2016 21:28

NO!!!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 16/10/2016 21:28

Yes

40somethingwonderful · 16/10/2016 21:36

No

QuinionsRainbow · 16/10/2016 22:57

No!

winkywinkola · 16/10/2016 23:11

No. Not at all happy.

But also we don't really know what path we are headed down. How anyone can say they are happy is dumb because there is no clarity.

The EU will let us know what to expect once Article 50 is activated.

What a pig's ear. For nothing.

Yabbadabbo2 · 16/10/2016 23:12

No, I'm sick to death of listening to whinging remain voters who do nothing but put this country down and believe it is safer in the hands of juncker and tusk. The way the government is handling it will be seen when then deal is struck you don't play your hand before you have to and that's what we're doing.

maninawomansworld01 · 16/10/2016 23:18

Yes I am happy.

I voted leave because I want to leave, not stay in by the back door.

I was also initially very unsure of Teresa May but with every turn I like her more.

I know it will go against the grain on here but personally I am very happy with the state of British politics at the moment.

I am not an uneducated racist , I am a well educated successful businessperson with carefully considered views. I'm sure lots of people with differing opinons will be along to call me names very shortly but I don't care.

wowowowow · 16/10/2016 23:23

SallyMcGally - I would love to read proof of your so called "brain drain"...from a reputable independent source please.

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/10/2016 23:25

NO

It's an unholy mess and about to get messier.

TheWoodlander · 16/10/2016 23:32

No!

I'm terrified.

Kittykatmacbill · 16/10/2016 23:35

No no no a thousand times no.

Marmitegate whilst indicative of shape of things to come, no food supply security. I can't see how that would be better for any future generation.

The Tories also seem to be using brexit to destroy the NHS rather than finding it 35illion a week or what ever the lie was.

itsawonderfulworld · 16/10/2016 23:43

No!!!

I honestly couldn't be happier that Theresa May is pm, I've always admired her and think her brexit will be as I would have it. Hard!

Good for you IamWendy. I take it you have a LOT of savings to cushion the blow of rising costs of living while we tighten our belts to try to keep some sort of NHS going? Newsflash: the £350 million were a lie...

We do have a serious savings cushion and will be fine either way, but we'll be taking our money elsewhere sooner rather than later. The UK is a sinking ship. Such a pity. Until now this is where we wanted to invest our future. That's no longer the case though! At least we won't lose out as it's easy to move our money elsewhere. This will cost UK jobs, though!

Theresa May is a c*nt and this country will sink with her as Prime Minister!
