To think it's unfair to leave a child in wrong way round shoes all day?

My ds has just started school, he's 4. They have p e twice a week and it is very evident which days as all children come out completely back to front and inside out. They have p e straight after drop off and say they want to teach children indepence so don't correct incorrect dressing. Fair enough! But on two days my child has come out with shoes on wrong feet. On Friday he said he'd had a really bad day because his friends wouldn't play with him because he was being to slow at running and he'd fallen over 3 times, he didn't click he could walk properly because his shoes were on incorrectly. I'm really trying to work on teaching him which foot goes on which (any tips?!) but he's not getting it very quickly! Aibu to think at reception age teachers should make sure children in their care have shoes on correct feet / prompt them when the haven't? It was very obvious he was walking like a penguin!

My mum put L and R in my shoes. I had no idea which was which. Still struggle with it now tbh! Grin

I am in no way suggesting that reception teachers are lazy, I love his teachers they are brilliant and have my full support I just wondered if I was being unreasonable that it should be a priority to ensure shoes are on the right feet. Obviously I am! They have outright said they will not help them or guide them or tell them if they are wrong - so it's not a laziness thing - it's a school policy.

I'm fine with the clothing- that doesn't bother me, but the shoes do, especially if he's falling over a lot. An idea could be straight after everyone puts their bags away that sit in a circle and the teacher has a quick scan?

I shall try the sticker ideas thank you

Moomoo. The comment from me wasn't directed at you but at the posters, who called teachers lazy.

Can I just say, once and for all, I WAS JOKING!

Mintychoc1 · 17/10/2016 07:01

I painted a little blob of gold nail varnish on each shoe, so that when DS stood with his feet together the blobs would be adjacent. He never got it wrong after that.

I just taught my 4 year old to tell the difference from if it feels right or not. We made a bit of a game of it (try a shoe on and say if it was the right foot or not) and she got it very quickly, along with velcro by the little toe

Put L and R in their shoes.

Finding L is easy, your left hand makes an L with your pointer finger and thumb.

If you can make your hand match the L in your shoe you have it the right way round.

Surely this is the time to teach at home now it's come up instead of asking the teacher to check everyone once they've all changed?

Keeptrudging · 17/10/2016 07:26

Seriously? Mean, nasty, lazy teachers leaving shoes on the wrong feet all day and laughing at children when they fall over? Yeah, that's exactly what happens...Hmm

No wonder teaching is suffering a recruitment crisis just now.

Where I live (not UK but international school) kids go in to school in PE kit on PE days. Makes sense. Most can't dress themselves until their teens as they have servants who want to do it for them!

Come on people, you know there's no understanding of tolerance for sarcasm on MN!

NattyTile · 17/10/2016 16:31

AmeliaJack that's how I tell left from right, but it doesn't help if either you are still learning letters so forget which way round the L points, or else forget which way to hold your hands (happily I also have a mark on my palm so if I put my hands that way round I also know which is left and which is right. But I wouldn't advocate scarring small children to make it easier for them to work it out!)

orangeyellowgreen · 17/10/2016 21:37

If nobody checks or notices if reception children are dressed properly after PE that's another reason that children are starting school too soon in UK.
Of course just turned 4 year olds need help with dressing.
