NC

Next weekend I have to go to a rather posh dinner thing with DH at a large hotel. It's his work colleagues. Now, despite the meal and table drinks being paid for by the company this has still cost us a fair bit to attend.

DH was saying last night the table drinks are simply water or wine. I don't drink, absolutely hate the taste of wine (yep I'm weird) and not a huge fan of plain water. Bar drinks are charged and really expensive.
I joked to DH I was going to put one of those squeezy juice things in my evening bag and sneakily put lemon and lime in my water. DH said go for it.

I really can't do that at a posh do can I? Blush

Do it!

I've been staying at a hotel this week for work. Apparently work won't pay for alcohol but I am used to a glass of wine with my meal. So I popped into Tesco for wine; asked for an ice bucket and glass for my room and took a large glass of wine in to the restaurant to drink with my meal. Walked through the bar area first. Restaurant were none the wiser and I wasn't paying out £6 odd for one glass. If you're blatant nobody questions you!

Everyone else at your table will be loving you much for not having wine (more to go around) that they will forgive you a splash of cordial Grin

BreadPitt · 14/10/2016 17:04

I don't mind water, but it's supposed to be a fun night for me and I'd like to drink something I at least enjoy. Water is great on a hot day or after exercise, but on a night out it doesn't do much for me. I did think it a shame that expensive wine was supplied but only water for non drinkers. I expected some kind of Shloer type alternative.

I shall pop my little squirty thing in my bag and play it by ear I think.

What, you can't stretch to a lime and soda (13p or whatever) at the bar?!?!

iklboo · 14/10/2016 17:19

13p lime & soda? Where do you drink? Last time I was charged £1.50 for a small glass, £2.50 for a pint at a local pub / restaurant.

LizB62A · 14/10/2016 17:20

A half pint of lime and soda at our local sports club is over £1 !! Where can you get it for 13p ?!!

BreadPitt · 14/10/2016 17:26

13p? Bloody hell I want to visit your pubs!

This is ver expensive hotel. Bar prices are eye watering.

I'd feel peeved if I were in your position, breadpitt, I've tolerated bad wine at functions in the past when I was younger and too timid to ask for something different. Not any more. I've learned that if you don't ask you don't get so I'd be braver these days.

Perfumery · 14/10/2016 17:52

Calm down dears, 13p is an obvious exaggeration.

Do you know, I don't care if a total stranger takes squeezy squash on a night out or not. What am I doing?!?! What are we all doing?!

BreadPitt · 14/10/2016 18:07

Sadly perfumery whilst you do care I don't know if others do iyswim. I wanted to make sure that I wasn't about to put DH in a position of embarrassment. Whilst I know a couple of his colleagues who are incredibly down to earth, many move in social circles waaay above lowly little me.

I kind of wanted to check that I wasn't about to make some huge faux pas.

I would I've taken Small bottles of vodka in clubs in my youth

iklboo · 14/10/2016 19:06

BreadPitt - higher social circles or not they still poo out of the same kind of hole, as my dear old dad says. But with more swearing.

PoppyPicklesPenguin · 14/10/2016 19:10

Someone is bound to get utterly drunk and make a complete tit out of themselves

Nobody will be judging your squeezie squash

StStrattersOfMN · 14/10/2016 19:14

I understand the water hatred, I love water, BUT it has to be ice cold, and I can only drink it through the straw of a lidded glass/cup, because I cannot stand the smell of it.

BreadPitt · 14/10/2016 19:20

Ikiboo, I think your dad and mine were cut from the same cloth.

Poppy, there is one colleague who's almost certain to do something embarrassing, so I think you're probably right there.

Stratters, I agree, ice cold is the only way though I can't say I've ever detected any scent in water. Am now fascinated 😃

I don't mind (or care) whether people like water or not, and I try not to be judgemental about anything, ever. But... if I ever decide to judge people, I'll start with judging people who feel they have the right to judge people for their drink preferences :-D!

StStrattersOfMN · 14/10/2016 20:09

I'm a supersmeller, got a nose like a bloodhound, which has its uses, but can also be a right pita. Put it this way, I can smell if someone in the (moving) car in front is smoking, even with the windows shut.

Water smells fishy to me. Hence needing a closed cup to drink from.
