WIBU to watch a horror movie (rated 18) with a baby on my lap?

Hello all Smile

First time mum here! My baby girl is only 2 weeks old. She is always asleep in my arms (I never get anything done!) and she currently is now... I'm just wondering if it would be okay to put on a horror movie. It's rated an 18. I know that babies do absorb sounds, etc. so I wasn't sure...

Thank you x

I miss the age of snuggling and watching what you like on tv as they havnt a foggy

Getting her used to sleeping through noise is good. Especially when you have a husband with the grace of a pissed buffalo.

Don't do something in case the change in your heart rate affects your child? Really?? Have I wandered into a Catherine Tate sketch and nobody told me?
Utter tosh! Your child needs to get used to noises and the normal hustle and bustle of your household. Then it won't phase them. Strangely they may even find it comforting especially if they are noises they would have been around while you were pregnant. Do not follow a baby must be in total silence routine or they will wake to the sound of a moth blinking.

I had a baby who fed every 90 minutes for the first 4 months. She fed through every available season of Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy. Doesn't appear to have done her any harm and it kept me sane.

Aw congratulations OP, I miss those days!

Absolutely fine by the way! Wink

It sounds like a great excuse for getting out of doing the school run if baby's not the PFB Grin
The stress of that usually raises my heart rate more than horror films.

My DD can sleep through all sorts of noises but if I gasp, even from across the room, she wakes up.

Babies are actual real people who come with their own little susceptibilities and foibles. I did nowt to train her to be ok with noise and nothing to make her think me making shocked noises might be scary. She's just like that.

Training babies to sleep through noise sounds horrendous to me tbh. When they are asleep that's a good time to be quietly asleep yourself not crash about hovering or whatever. But I'm lazy and sleep deprived!

We watched a lot of True Blood when DD was born. Gave up watching stuff when she hit around 4 months and started looking at the TV!

Absorbed noise? Elevated heart rate?
What a load of crap.
Parents are still their own person, of course you should sit and watch a horror movie if you want!

I totally would up until baby is at an age where they actually see and take in what is happening. So perhaps 12-18months I might cut back on certain things in their presence.

Take advantage of watching whatever you want on the telly before you're plunged into a world where you fancy Mr Bloom because the only other TV men you see are Justin, Iggle Piggle, PC Plum and Flop.

I'd be interested to hear a child psychologist's view on this actually. I wonder at what age little ones do start to absorb disturbing images etc.

daisiesinherfootsteps · 14/10/2016 06:39

It's absolutely fine, so long as sound fairly low. You'll have to stop soon enough (IIRC by 3/4 months) whenever you notice them turning head towards TV. Enjoy it while you can before the years of cbeebies begin!

QuilliamCakespeare · 14/10/2016 06:50

I spent the first three months of DS' life breastfeeding in the middle of the night while watching Dexter (series about a ridiculous serial killer for anyone not familiar). They don't remember anything at that age.

Believeitornot · 14/10/2016 06:53

A horror isn't really normal background noise is it.... Grin

We used to keep ds down with us of an evening and try and watch tv but at about 12 weeks it all went to pot and he stopped settling. He was naturally quite a light sleeper and still is aged 7.
Dd on the other hand could sleep through a fire alarm.

So I don't think watching tv now sets them up to be a heavy sleeper.

I think it would be fine while baby is so little (congratulations!) why dont you try it and see how it goes? Then you can make your own mind up 😉
