blondieblondie · 13/10/2016 19:18

I've received my renewal notice for my car insurance and my premium has gone up by £30 a month

I've had my licence one year and made no claims.

i was looking forward to it going down! Confused. I no I can look elsewhere, but any possible explanations?

Is it OK to mention companies by name on here? It's Direct Line. Great for car insurance but the house insurance is the standard stuff. Very easy to deal with though.

BoboBunnyH0p · 13/10/2016 21:32

I always check a Comparison site and then call my insurance company and ask is that the best price they can do. Have done this the last 3 years and they have always price matched the lowest quote.

Musicaltheatremum · 13/10/2016 21:38

I pay about £550 a year and that's for me, my 23 year old daughter and my 21 year old son who have 5 and 3 years no claims respectively. I have thousands of years no claims. I'm with churchill.

mysistersimone · 13/10/2016 21:41

Mine has gone down every year with 9 years no claims. I'm with Sheilas Wheels

I found that when my premium went up after 1 year with no claims, when I actually phoned them and talked to them, it went down. Basically, if you just automatically renew online it might go up, but if you call them up they can re do the quote for you and it does come out cheaper for some reason. If necessary they can just put you on to a 'new' policy, which is cheaper (that's what they did with me Grin)

Ring them up and say "I've had a quote for £xx from company so-and-so" - at least half the time they will match it. If not you move. I have never stayed with the same car insurance company two years in a row.

Direct line put my daughters up by £300! So we swopped to admiral

ilovecakeandbiscuits · 13/10/2016 22:18

Im an insurance broker and would like to say this does happen... although £30 per month sounds like a lot! Shop around and u will get a better price. Dont forget insurance premium tax has gone up again from 1st oct to 10%... just over a year ago it was 6%

ICancelledTheCheque · 13/10/2016 22:26

My insurance went down each year for the first five years of driving and then increased slightly or stayed more or less the same. So no, I don't think a £360 annual increase is normal!

The only time our insurance sky rocketed was when we moved around five streets away to a newly built housing estate.... DHs insurance went from £400 to £1,700, apparently because they had no crime statistics as it was a new postcode. Needless to say we paid the £50 admin fee, cancelled and got insurance for £500 elsewhere.

c3pu · 13/10/2016 22:37

There is no reduction for loyalty in car insurance world! Shop around.

SouthernComforts · 13/10/2016 22:50

I was paying £1050 to be a named driver on a big, old, 2 litre turbo diesel. Decided to buy a brand new small 1.4 hatchback. Got a quote online for £700 as the main driver, rang my current insurer to give them a chance to beat it and their quote was.. £4000. No joke. I declined Grin

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 13/10/2016 22:52

Don't be surprised if you find a better deal with the same company that's currently trying to rip you off. It's bonkers.

MariposaUno · 14/10/2016 00:06

I had my renewal and it was only £60 cheaper. Went on comparison and got it a good £200 cheaper than 1st year's insurance and a much better insurance policy to boot.

1st year driving to so I 3nd what pp have said there is no loyalty with insurance.

ParForTheCourses · 14/10/2016 07:16

Look at the money saving expert website. If you have the time he has great tips using the comparison and cashbook sites.

They will shaft you if they can, shop around and find someone better. I did that with mine in 2014. Got a new insurer and 2015 and 2016 they sent me great cheap quotes. Beware the administration fee though. Some insurers don't have one especially if all done online but some will shaft you there too.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/10/2016 07:39

No ones mentioned cashback sites.

Register with quidco and topcashback (free, don't click the £5 option yet)

Do a comparison, then see what cashback the cheapest one offers on quidco and topcashback.

Then check Aviva, minus their cashback.

You can save lots. Always do this as soon as they let you, you'll pay more to insure the closer you are to renewal.

Eg. Renewal £287 (for full ncb, no accidents and a clean licence) for a Citroen c1.

Aviva, £160 after cashback for fully comp & legal. (£220 minus £60cashback)

The cashback will become payable around Christmas time so that'll be handy.

Charley50 · 14/10/2016 07:45

As you're a newish driver, insurance will often be cheaper if you put a more experienced driver as another driver. Mine went down by hundreds when I added my DP. The person doesn't have to live at the same address.

Oblomov16 · 14/10/2016 07:50

Same here. Then I went on comparison sites, also checked with Aviva and Direct Line, who I don't think do comparison sites, and found a cheaper option.
