AIBU that if I start a new job I should be able to take leave over Christmas (in this line of work Christmas isn't a busy time) without waiting for my leave to 'accrue: in some way..? This job has 25 annual days leave attached to it.

Wanting a couple of days off v different to wanting to go and "see family all over the world".

You'll have to see what your contract says and who has already booked the days off. I wouldn't bank on either tbh.

If you get 25 days over 52 weeks, then if you started now you'd still have accrued about 10 days, surely?

Huh? 25 days per year means just over 2 days accrues per month. So even if they started today they would only accrue 5 days by Xmas day maximum (less if it accrues only during whole calendar months).

It might not be a busy time but if everyone else has theirs booked already it could be tricky unless you agree it before starting. If the leave year starts 1st Jan you will probably only get what you accrue this year,

I'm not actually planning a round the world trip!... Just we feel we need a proper break-it's been hellish. .. The close family we would see would be a mix of UK and mainland Europe.

I think if we want the flexibility it would be safest to negotiate a new year start rather than do a month and hope they are OK with letting us have the time!

Good point whoever made it re the feel of the workplace. And the workplace culture ... Really don't want to piss colleagues off before properly started! Although I've never sucessfully juggled time off at yule....

Never worked out what was fairest... Completely understand that people don't necessarily want to take all of their leave and just have the main days with their local family.... Given the distances involved for us - unless we have 4-5 days off we can't get to have a family Christmas.

Most companies honour existing leave commitments - can you tell them now so they can plan around it? I manage people and they can take leave without having accrued it but if they leave they will be asked to pay it back.
