Brexit now affecting supermarkets?

e1y1 · 13/10/2016 01:23

Tesco has dropped all 200 of Unilever's brands from store shelves, over a dispute over pricing.

Unilever is blaming Brexit as the reason for wanting a 10% price increase for supply of it's products.

Whereas, MPs are saying Unilever are just using Brexit as a smokescreen to raise prices.

Unilever own some of the biggest brands in the UK - Persil, PG Tips, Dove, Hellmans etc.

And with Tesco's being the UKs biggest supermarket chain, this can't be good (other supermarkets have also said they would drop the brands as opposed to absorbing a price hike).

Do you think Brexit is really now affecting our supermarket shelves?

Sorry for the source (but would imagine it's in others too as heard it on the radio) HERE

It's not just processed food. Unilever also makes detergents and toiletries and other useful household stuff. And with a 14% drop in the value of sterling all food imports will be more expensive including fruit, vegetables and even grains that aren't grown in this country.

It will be good for the environment though as we revert to swedes and cabbage to get us through the winter and stop eating colourful fruit and veg that has been transported hundreds of miles.

It's not just Unilever. They will just be the first. Prices will rise from all suppliers. Even UK based companies will use.some raw material that is imported at some point in the process. It's shitty, but inevitable.

Ontopofthesunset · 13/10/2016 08:40

Cif
Persil
Biotex
Pears
QTips
Simple

Amongst the non food items

Toxic and ontop

Bit distressed about the mayo

My point re own brands was more that the supermarkets dont make own brands.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 13/10/2016 08:51

Oh and tesco just dont want to be first to hike prices

I think they all will, its just when

Pasithea · 13/10/2016 08:57

I think most products whether uni lever or not will rise with the fuel prices too. I don't think any of us will avoid price hikes before Christmas.

Elendon · 13/10/2016 08:59

Loving the irony of leave voters shopping in Aldi. Howling with laughter at leave voters hoping that German and Italian banks will collapse.

Brexit has repercussions and consequences. This being an example. Loss of choice in the supermarkets. I like Colemans English mustard and Marmite.

The U.K. And Northern Ireland haven't left the EU yet. I just renewed my European health card for me and my children. They are valid until 2021.

Gowgirl · 13/10/2016 09:00

Price hikes don't matter because we "took back control" Grin I just snorted my tea! I intend to spend the next couple of years nodding sagely at all whingeing and uttering the line above....yrs I'm looking at you dm, mil, dsis etc...

Scot2Be · 13/10/2016 09:02

Pasithea I agree and leavers will continue blaming the negative effects of their ignorant, wishful thinking and largely xenophobic vote on either evil corporations or unpatriotic remainers who are not thinking positive. The experts bloody told you.

fakenamefornow · 13/10/2016 09:02

It's not Brexit, it's all the evil EU's fault. Even when we leave everything bad that happens will still be the fault of the evil EU. Oh and they do it all deliberately because they hate British people so much.

BalthazarImpresario · 13/10/2016 09:04

I believe Tesco argument was that when costs were low they didn't lower prices so why increase now.

In our household we are very concerned about the Marmite shortage . Do has popped out to panic buy some.
I did wonder why so much was unavailable on tesco website. Seems a lot of Unilever products were on offer this week.

And re previous poster, yes Brexit has stolen our daylight hours, I predict in a couple of weeks we will suddenly lose a whole hour in one day...madness!!

ScaredFuture99 · 13/10/2016 09:07

I have to laugh.
So supermarket don't want to be seen as the ones who have increased prices by the consumers so they are asking the producers to 'absorb' the price hike! It doesn't matter that the pound has collapsed so all the prices will have gone up by default. It doesn't even matter if the company who has increased their prices would go under 'because it just can't be because of Brexit'.
That's, of course, forgetting that most if not all products will go up in prices because most products are imported (look at where your fruits and vegs are coming from, or your butter or your wine) or made using products that are imported (look at bread etc...)

That's head in sand situation BIG WAY.

But then I suppose that consumers will be very happy not to be able to buy any Marmite, Persil etc... at all if all the supermarket are deciding to boycott them. They don't have ANY attachment to brand at all. NOT.

Scot2Be · 13/10/2016 09:07

Yes Fake and they hate the Britsh people so much because Britsh people are great, you know, they are superior.

Luckily we are in a position to pay a bit more for our weekly shopping without too much pain and we don't really eat much processed food anyway. Which is why I am smirking a little bit about marmite gate. Forrest Gump knew it all along stupid is as stupid does.

Its' time to tighten our belts people.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 13/10/2016 09:07

balthazar

Omg Shock the bastards...a whole hour

Whyyyyyyy god whyyyyy

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 13/10/2016 09:08

Hold on Hmm

Dont we get it back again

ScaredFuture99 · 13/10/2016 09:09

Batlthazar Tesco will be able to use that argument when they will start dropping prices of petrol as soon as the price of petrol is going down.
As it happens they never do it and the last time (only time?) it really happened it was after a big uproar birth from son summers and politicians and prices went back up very quickly too

londonrach · 13/10/2016 09:12

Tbh unilevel is on my banned list anyway due to terrible customer service. Havent bought their items for 5 years.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 13/10/2016 09:13

It won't be just Unilever - all prices are going to go up

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 13/10/2016 09:13

My DH works for a supplier to Unilever and is concerned. The bosses have already had to cut back on stuff due to the weak pound (their suppliers are in Europe).

It's not just Tesco that is involved with this, Unilever has done the same with all the supermarkets, Tesco are just the one involved in a giant pissing contest.

Boosiehs · 13/10/2016 09:14

I can't help but laugh.

If it wasn't so tragic of course.

Everyone was told that this would be one of the results of brexit. Falling pound means more expensive to import goods - even raw materials for products so called "made in britain". Unilever is an Anglo-Dutch company - so falling pound does affect it - never mind the product happens to be made here.

Ha ha ha. We really did tell you so.

O

carrotcakecupcake · 13/10/2016 09:15

Mrs Terry I'll give you all my Marmite and risk possible divorce from DH for some decent poutine!!

Boosiehs · 13/10/2016 09:15

Petrol won't be going down for a VERY long time (if ever) given its priced in Dollars. Falling pound and falling oil reserves mean a much more expensive trip to the pumps.

Elendon · 13/10/2016 09:15

Yes the evil EU will be likened to the evil bitter ex during divorce proceedings. "Bitch took all my money and I'm now living in a manky bedsit."

Grin
anon123456 · 13/10/2016 09:16

Unilever is just trying to make bigger profist from Brexit. For example England has a factory that makes all of the worlds Marmite, it exports 95% of it. So due to the fall in the pound the the price of Marmite should actually be falling. Yet Unilever want to add 10% to it. Greedy bastards.
