Brexit now affecting supermarkets?

e1y1 · 13/10/2016 01:23

Tesco has dropped all 200 of Unilever's brands from store shelves, over a dispute over pricing.

Unilever is blaming Brexit as the reason for wanting a 10% price increase for supply of it's products.

Whereas, MPs are saying Unilever are just using Brexit as a smokescreen to raise prices.

Unilever own some of the biggest brands in the UK - Persil, PG Tips, Dove, Hellmans etc.

And with Tesco's being the UKs biggest supermarket chain, this can't be good (other supermarkets have also said they would drop the brands as opposed to absorbing a price hike).

Do you think Brexit is really now affecting our supermarket shelves?

Sorry for the source (but would imagine it's in others too as heard it on the radio) HERE

Agree he was indeed s muppet. However I must say as an avid politics follower I still think the recession took most political and economic figures world wide by surprise.

I agree with you that recessions are cyclical and of course we will always have boom and bust that's life but what we are in for now in the long term is anyone's guess I think.

Gowgirl · 13/10/2016 13:30

I wont be shutting up either, I'm bloody angry about it all still, and mumsnet is a place where opinions can be aired and argued.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 13/10/2016 13:31

And in other news- Nicola Stugeon has announced that the SNP will seek a second referendum on independence .

Well there is a suprise....

NS will find any opportunity to do so. She has said herself, it's something she has wanted all her life.

Dontpanicpyke · 13/10/2016 13:32

Nicola will do or say anything to get an independent Scotland.

If Scotland votes to go good on them and good luck to them. What's the big deal? No ones begging them to stay.

Underparmummy · 13/10/2016 13:32

ClarkL - My sales guys haven't actually been saying that, just to be super clear but as a throwaway ironic comment I defend it. Food and petrol prices rising was the obvious immediate effect of a Brexit, anyone voting for that must have believed themselves to have very deep pockets. Therefore maybe they can help out anyone feeling the pinch pre Brexit?! Leave voters were aware of the higher prices and actively chose them!

Gowgirl · 13/10/2016 13:33

Hmmmmm just what we need another referendumHmm

HyacinthFuckit · 13/10/2016 13:34

HyacinthFuckit
I apologised once for your misinterpretation of my comment. Because you seemed offended and my intention is not to offend. That is it, I am not apologising for my behaviour, and I most certainly am not apologising more than once.
So consider my initial apology for your offence withdrawn as you clearly do not care who you offend.

I'm afraid the time for the moral high ground has been and gone. Also, you can't apologise for something someone else has done. Only for what you have, which your words make clear you don't really mean.

But you carry on. Making yourself look like both an arse and a trivialiser of genocide.

Underparmummy · 13/10/2016 13:35

Also, on a different stance, bloody well done to Tesco for calling out the big brands. Maybe in this new retail world of discounters we don't have to pay higher prices for nifty marketing and no discernible difference in quality.

Andrewofgg · 13/10/2016 13:36

Any referendum must be in Scotland and the rest of the UK simultaneously with Yes and Yes required to set the process going. It's our Union too.

May was all about the union in her first speech as PM outside No 10 wasn't she?

Haha gowgirl - There is a transformation happening at Tesco towers, it could turn out ok over there.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 13/10/2016 13:47

Thing is, what the remainers have to understand is that it doesn't really matter about price rises and job losses as long as we don't have to obey those terrible EU laws anymore.

SleepFreeZone · 13/10/2016 13:48

Does anyone know if the EU would take Scotland on its own if Independance were to happen?

I read that that had been ruled out due to their economy being too small/unstable. So if that is correct would Scotland form a union with another EU country I wonder 🤔

Underparmummy · 13/10/2016 13:50

sleep - Id read that Scotland was too 'small' as well. How about if retainers from the other parts of Britain formed a separate sovereignty and we all rejoined together?!

Underparmummy · 13/10/2016 13:50

*remainers

"This is mn where it was all puppies and kittens before the eu, and people think it makes sense to buy strawberries in October"

They are part of my healthy eating plan. I put them in with my Weetabix for breakfast.

Ive had no trouble getting hold of them for the past 3 years. Until this week . ( ive managed to get some at Sainsburys.)

If i ate processed crap just because its autumn/winter i would soon gain back the weight ive lost.

Prices going up on fruit and veg will make healthy eating a lot harder.

This is the kind of thing we should be worrying about not telling ppl its stupid to expect to buy berries when we have got hold of them perfectly easily before, at this time of year.

A PP on page one has explained why there has been a problem this week.

RedToothBrush · 13/10/2016 13:50

Politically I think Sturgeon has no choice for a variety of political reasons, its not just her own agenda of wanting Independence. The way in which May has handled Brexit so far has been to say that she will fully involve Scotland (almost to the point that some implied that she was giving Scotland a veto). She then moved from that point to the one where she spoke of people opposing Brexit as being undemocratic and not listening to the will of the people and singled out nationalists for special treatment saying
All possible because we are one United Kingdom – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – and I will always fight to preserve our proud, historic Union and will never let divisive nationalists drive us apart.

Which is a bit rich given the extent to which English nationalism was a key force behind the Brexit vote and completely disrespects the interaction she had with Sturgeon personally the day after she became PM.

Sturgeon has not said that she WILL go ahead with a ref. Merely that she think there is a case for one before Apr 1st 2019 - an important date. The day that if art 50 is triggered at the end of March will be the day we leave the EU.

Its in effect a vote in no confidence in May's leadership - and unwillingness to involve Scotland in the process of leaving the EU despite saying she would - as much as it is about Independence.

Seeing as May wasn't listening to other appeals and points from Scotland and was so dismissive, Sturgeon was left with little other option imho.

I am no fan of the idea of Scottish Independence FWIW. Looking at the case versus the one a couple of years ago though the goal posts have shifted a great deal and the case is a lot more compelling. If I were living in Scotland it would now be looking rather attractive for a number of reasons.

Anyway eating vegemite, doesn't exactly support British workers do it?

Peregrina · 13/10/2016 13:50

Could Scotland form some sort of alliance with Ireland, or is that a silly idea?
