To ask what jobs can I do from home? Poverty is grinding me down, running out of ideas

I have several disabilities and am looking for part time work because it's all I can manage. I'm trying to get my own business off the ground also, it has no costs so I'm not out of pocket but progress is slow and not enough to live off. I'm living on PIP and get my housing benefit, which was cut off today because a flatmate moved out and we alerted the council tax dept. I have a few savings which pay for any other essentials.

I'm quite upset that I'll have to go in and waste hours trying to re-instate the housing benefit but I really have to do it. I only have enough savings left to sustain myself for two months having eked them out for months. Because of my disability, I cannot stand for several hours which means I can't do retail work, not that I've any experience of that anyway.

I keep getting to the last handful for jobs that suit my skills then being pipped at the post, so I'm sure I will get something eventually.

What work can I do from home? Copywriting or virtual assistant or similar things? Does anyone know any good agency I could apply to?

Could you do pet sitting for small pets (that don't need walking)? Don't know if animals would contribute to illness, sorry.

I'm placemarking I'll be back tomorrow Smile

Check and see if you can claim ESA. I also have multiple disabilities and there are several premiums if you get high enough rates of DLA/PIP that massively boost your income. I get £350 a week with £90 of that being Housing Benefit and £75 being DLA. The rest is all ESA + Premiums.

ERS Connect does the training from home too. There's a Skype interview, Web based training, then live shift training.

Wow lots of great options here! ( sorry don't have anything to add, but this is brilliant )

SusanneLinder · 12/10/2016 07:52

You should be able to claim ESA if you have disabilities.
I know they get slated on here, but how about a party plan business like Partylite, Bodyshop or Avon. Or book clubs. You won't get rich but most of these dont have any money up front, and you dont need to get sucked in to all that recruiting stuff if you don't want to.

I hope you find something suitable, and get the HB sorted out soon.

even if it's not your area I don't see why you can't apply

HappiestMrsChicken may I PM you too please?

This is interesting thread! I've started an eBay business but not making anything like the person up thread. More effort needed on my part I think!

If you do take proofreading for university students, be very clear to them that you and they need to stick to their university guidelines. Don't rewrite for them!

See here for a random example of uni guidelines; they may vary a bit but this is probably pretty typical.

When I do this, it leaves me with itchy fingers, but it has to be the student's own work that is assessed.

Snurking at the idea upthread of sex-line-plus-ironing: 'Yeah, I'm so hot... my knickers are steaming...'

NothingIsOK · 12/10/2016 10:10

ESA sadly not always an option. I've just had mine completely and abruptly stopped despite being signed off by GP waiting for major inpatient surgery to help me walk and sit without chronic pain.

I had no idea they could do this. PIP reviews are getting a lot of media coverage, but ESA assessments are now happening too, and they're just as bad. Points based horrors. Apparently should be able to do some work, and it would be better for me to be in work, even if it's not my usual employment, and therefore I lost all ESA benefit immediately. I've asked for a reassessment but in the meantime, no money coming in at all.

NothingIsOK get an appeal in right away. The assessments are a farce and almost everyone gets rejected. My letter telling me that I got 0 points on the test arrived while I was in the hospital for a week!

I appealed and was put in the support group - which is for people who are likely to never work again. I should have scored 52 points overall while you only need 15 to qualify. My report was full of contradicting statements and bore no resemblance to the actual assessment I had.

Always appeal. You will continue to be paid until the tribunal and the people running that are there to find the truth, not take your money away. Mine were lovely and make the whole thing very easy for me.

Thank you everybody.

Lots of great ideas! Fantastic, going to check all of them out. This has cheered me up.

I don't want to apply for ESA, there are so many hoops to jump through regarding whether you're allowed to work a few hours or not and what you can be paid, and I'd be terrified of screwing up and being accused of benefit fraud etc. I have had troubles with mental health in the past and know that being worried constantly about that would not be a good option.

Really great thread. OP, have a look at home admin. A person that does the admin for a small business at home. I know a person who was made redundant and she set this up by advertising her service. She also had a basic website/Linkdin

Mbardino · 17/10/2016 10:48

The training at enterprise is done from home - (2 weeks) and is paid.
