I am aware that this will make me look stupid..but Trump goes on and on about border control and as he put it in yesterday's debate, all of the people "pouring in" from the Middle East etc. But from what I've always seen, it's incredibly difficult to move to the States unless it is with work, you have a duel citizenship or you marry someone from there. After I finished uni I was desperate to move out to California after having worked there during my Camp America stint and falling in love with one particular area but it seemed impossible. So who are all these people "pouring in" and how are they doing it ??

My state alone has around 25k immigrants just from Somalia alone.

Atenco · 11/10/2016 13:00

lljkk your summing up of the situation of Mexican immigration is masterly.

OlennasWimple · 11/10/2016 13:54

Fleur - student visas don't count towards the five years needed for settlement in the UK, but pretty much all work visas do Confused

Atenco - what's your problem?

passingthrough1 · 11/10/2016 13:59

A bit of me wants him to win because I want him to try and build this wall ...
Just HOW will he get Mexico to pay for it and how many years would it take to build this wall? And will there be guards patrolling every day few hundred metres.. how many guards would that be and how much would it cost?

I also kind of want the wall to be built at great expense and for them to immediately find tunnels underneath!

I guess he's imagining some kind of high tech wall (like with motion sensors and video maybe?) but all I see in my head is a really long hadrians wall that people can just climb over Smile

He wants to get rid of legal Mexican immigrants, too, ideally, and also (in his dream world) millions of Americans of Hispanic (primarily also of indigenous) descent who have never lived (nor have any of their ancestors) in Mexico, well except that some of them have ancestors who lived in Texas or California when those were part of Mexico.

Right wing nut jobs are very good at forgetting history, and that in many parts of the US Hispanic populations were there first.

The Mexican ambassador has told him to go F* himself.

BummyMummy77 · 11/10/2016 14:14

Cheerfulyank - are you in Maine?

Rainbunny · 11/10/2016 23:27

The irony about people being so freaked out by illegal Mexican immigrants in the USA "stealing jobs" from US citizens is that it will economically hurt tAmericans if there was was a serious crackdown and all illegal immigrants blocked from entering. A few years ago the state legislature of Georgia passed the toughest anti-illegal immigration statute in the country and then were shocked when within 12 months farmers couldn't get anywhere near enough labor to harvest their crops. Produce worth tens of millions was left to rot, farmers went out of business, the price of produce went up sharply and the Governor of Georgia tried to suggest that prison labor should be drafted in to help pick crops (the farmers were not impressed by that suggestion...) The economic hit to Georgia was bad since agriculture is its largest industry.

I particularly enjoy the irony that as a result more and more produce is being farmed in Mexico partially as a result of this and the very same people who hate illegal immigrants hate this as well because it's another USA domestic industry that is hurt by that evil NAFTA deal...

mathanxiety · 12/10/2016 02:48

Speaking of irony, I always think of Ronald Reagan , 'Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall' when the idea of the wall is brought up.

By any definition the US uses, Mexico is a failed state. It might be that invasion and setting up a puppet government would be cheaper and more effective in the long run than the wall. The US could thumb its nose at anyone who complains. There is lots of precedent.

Bulbasaur · 12/10/2016 03:14

It would be the death of whatever party did that. California used to be a red state until Republicans pissed off the latino population and lost their support. Now it's a heavy blue state.

People complain about illegals, but no one I know (even the staunch Republicans) would ever actually get on board with invading Mexico.

It's a democratic country and if enough people agree, and thAt will be many millions of people, he will be president of the most powerful country in the world. I'm surprised people are still being jokey and dismissive of him, people were confident we'd stay in Eu!

NovemberInDailyFailLand · 12/10/2016 04:23

Atenco - Indeed!

Heaven forbid these types should trick us respectable white folk into marrying them Confused

I am too. I wouldn't be if Clinton was actively liked by more people than my DD2. There are so few Hillary signs in people's front gardens here, and I live in a lefty, Democratic voting place. I am concerned that turnout will be quite low except for people who are Trump enthusiasts.

Unless he's planning to circumnavigate the Earth with it

I suspect he believes the earth is flat, so anyone trying to get round the edge of it would just fall off.

mathanxiety · 12/10/2016 06:34

There were Sanders signs everywhere, literally everywhere, in the primaries here.

Atenco · 12/10/2016 13:49

Mexico has a puppet government as it is, mathsanxiety. The government we have on serves their own personal interests and those of their foreign paymasters.

I've always had a theory that Trump only exists to force people to vote for Hilary, because she is so awful, only Trump could trump her.

OlennasWimple · 12/10/2016 18:36

There are still more Sanders signs left up than new Hillary signs here... And even more Trump signs Sad

As rainbunny said a lot of industries would be on their knees without immigrants. Try getting served in a restaurant in NYC if you deported all the illegals.

Similar to UK, you wouldn't get a curry or a taxi!

BummyMummy77 · 12/10/2016 21:26

Loads of trump stickers and signs where I am. Tried to get a Hillary sticker today at the dem store and they were all gone and only had Obama ones left. Grin

CheerfulYank · 13/10/2016 00:26

No Bummy :) I'm in Minnesota.

NewgatesKnockers · 13/10/2016 00:35

I saw my first Trump bumper sticker last week, and I live in the South.

Rainbunny · 13/10/2016 01:29

My local pet store sells Trump and Clinton doggy poop bags! I asked the owner what the selling ratio was and it's about 90% Trump poop bags being sold and 10% Clinton. I think this is a far more more accurate indicator than any poll LOL!

I did consider buying some Trump poop bags but then I thought about it and decided that my dog's poop is far too good to end up in Trump!
