To wish they would stop putting sweeteners in fizzy drinks!

Ok, so it's not a big deal. But sometimes I really fancy a fizzy drink. But they all seem to have sweeteners in.

I understand everyone needs choices. There should be a sugar option and a sweetener option IMO which is what it used to be. But it seems all the normal sugar options have sweeteners in too.

I react really badly to chemical sweeteners. Severe migraines and vomiting. Even if I didn't though I don't like the taste.

I miss Lilt. Fanta. Tango. Cream Soda. Shandy.

At the cinema the choice was diet pepsi, pepsi max, diet tango and sprite zero. Not one sugar choice.

I get the demand for sweeteners but leave the sugar versions alone!!!

BabyGanoush Sprite has sweeteners, 7Up is the safe option Grin

They're vile.

NewStartNewName · 09/10/2016 22:41

Bought some Schweppes lemonade - not diet version, still had sweetener in it

BabyGanoush · 09/10/2016 22:41

Ah, thanks

Not that I feel strongly about this, or anything Grin

BabyGanoush · 09/10/2016 22:41

Schweppes is horrid now. Their tonic no longer nice...

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 09/10/2016 22:42

Between the sugar tax and the demonisation of sugar as something that everyone should detox from to be healthier, I think sweetener will be the only option soon. It's definitely taken over as the main option now!

Thankfully I don't mind sweetener but I have a godchild who reacts badly to it, and can drink barely anything fizzy.

NewStartNewName · 09/10/2016 22:42

For all the bad publicity sugar gets, I'd still rather my kids had sugar than chemicals

CarrieLouise25 · 09/10/2016 22:46

Oh... Vimto, how could I forget Sad

Coke is about the only thing I do drink when it comes to a fizzy treat. I hope that doesn't change. I would be LIVID if I ordered a coke and got diet instead.

I guess they will creep into all foods eventually.

I hate this trend of sticking aspartame in everything too. I used to love pepsi max cherry..much better then cherry coke, but the aspartame drove my stomach crazy. I end up drinking regular coke, capri-sun or ribena all the time for soft drinks.

God I miss lots of things, I miss proper Tizer, I miss proper monster munch, I miss proper ringos and Kp Mini chips beef flavour!!! I know you can get these in scotland but impossible to get in England.

IDismyname · 09/10/2016 22:55

I bought some Solero type lollies from Lidl's a few weeks back. Unwrapped one to be hit with the heady stench of artificial sweeteners. Urgh!

It's about the only sh*te thing I've bought there.

NicknameUsed · 09/10/2016 22:55

I have found my people Grin

I hate diet drinks. If I want no calories I drink water or black coffee

I buy Fever Tree tonic water. Even their lower calorie tonic water is artificial sweetener free. Supermarket own brand high juice squash is also sweetener free.

NeedABanner · 09/10/2016 22:58

Fortunately my Fizzy choice is Sparkling Water. No messing with that. Yet.

I can't stand sweeteners - they taste vile.

Psyhke · 09/10/2016 23:03

Yadnu. I can't abide the taste of sweeteners ,can taste them a mile off. Been complaining about this for years and it's getting worse and in everything. Drinks wise I stick to Tesco's High Juice, not sugar free version and the likes of Belvoir. Sometimes mix it with fizzy water if I feel the need for bubbles Grin

Scuttlebutter · 09/10/2016 23:05

Another one here who loathes sweeteners. Thank goodness for Fever Tree tonic, plus in the summer we've enjoyed the occasional San Pellegrino, plus the lovely Cawston Press soft drinks - the mint and cucumber is really refreshing. I tend to avoid G & T if out, as so often the tonic served is Schweppes and the taste is vile.

lifeaintblackandwhite · 09/10/2016 23:07

Sweeteners are disgusting. End of.

Crispbutty · 09/10/2016 23:07

I bought a soda stream, and buy the full sugar cordials, which are getting fewer and fewer that haven't been tampered with. Sainsburys have brought out a pineapple peach and passion fruit that is great mixed with soda though. Robinsons still do a couple of full sugar cordials as well.

ChasedByBees · 09/10/2016 23:09

Yes totally with you on this. We should all write to the manufacturers.

Ineedmorepatience · 09/10/2016 23:10

Rare for me to post on here but I agree with you all!

I hate drinking chemicals and still search for "full fat" versions of squash . Luckily Sainsbury still do some and morrisons. Its getting harder thoughHmm

expatinscotland · 09/10/2016 23:10

YANBU

24balloons · 09/10/2016 23:12

I hate sweeteners too.

I buy 7Up, normal lucozade, San pelligrino, Ribera & fruit juices all without sweeteners. Also things like shlor are sweetener free. They all cost more than the artificially sweetened drinks though

NicknameUsed · 09/10/2016 23:13

There is a pub in Cheshire that specialises in selling hundreds of different gins. The only tonic water they sell is Fever Tree. They don't ruin a good gin with tonic water containing crappy artificial sweeteners.

Okkitokkiunga · 09/10/2016 23:14

Totallly agree. They give me headaches as well. I thought for a while I was going have to give up alcohol as the hangovers were awful. Gave up stuff with sweeteners instead. Fever Tree totally rules. Bottle Green do sweetener free fizzy stuff now as well.

Seeingfae · 10/10/2016 00:06

I hate the taste of sweeteners too, tastes like there is a load of lemon juice in my drink. I pretty much only drink Appletise and rio now.

I did go to poundland the other day and saw fanta that was darker than normal, turns out it was made with sugar and no sweeteners. I bought a lot.

bruffin · 10/10/2016 06:11

I wrote and complained when they changed Nestea to stevia (not natural however they try to pretend it is)
They said it was because rhe government want them to cut down on sugarHmm
I saw a programme years ago that said artificial sweeteners cost one 70th the price of sugar.
There is a high percenrage of the population who are genetically disposed to disliking the taste, these companies a foolish to ignore us.
As said above i dont buy anything with sweeteners in, its not just drink but yoghurts as well

engineersthumb · 10/10/2016 06:43

I do understand wanting the choice between sugar and sweetener and really feel sorry for the people who get headaches from them. However, I really don't understand the argument "I'd rather feed my kids sugar than chemicals". Sugar is a highly refined product and no more natural in that sense than the constituents of aspartame or Saccharin. Saccharin does have a bitter aftertaste but has far less side effects than sugar such as tooth decay, diabetes and obesity. I largely think people should be left to make an informed choice buy it worries me to hear the "it's natural so it's better" argument as it's somewhat more complex.
What do people think of the sugar tax? Personally I'm not convinced but what do we do to, for example; reduce the number of child tooth extractions in hard to reach groups?
