To ask the neighbour to shut up at 5?

Neighbour is building a house at the end of our smallish garden. He's doing all the work himself so tends to be evenings and weekends. He's apparently been doing it for 4 yrs but we only moved in 10 mths ago. He regularly has heavy machinery running, mini digger and a very loud, stinky dumper. He's had the engines running since about 1.30 on a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon. I've had to have the windows shut and we haven been able to go in the garden. The continual chug chug noise is doing my head in. Would I be unreasonable to ask him to stop now?

4 years ?? is he building a mansion ? sounds very extreme, surprised no one from the council hasn't been in touch - environmental health etc.

That's what he told DH, only does it weekends so I imagine it would take that long, but the machinery does my head in and fills the garden with exhaust fumes. It's only a smallish house.

Thank fuck he's stopped!! I think he saw me giving him evils from the upstairs windows. I was willing his machine to stop working!!

It would bother me far more in the summer. My windows are closed now.

Generally hours are 8am to 6pm Mon-Fri and 8am to 1pm on a Saturday.

contact the council, he's spoiling the enjoyment of your home.

Has he got planning permission?

I imagine he's got planning permission but was before we moved in. I might check local council rules.

Planning permission only lasts for a limited time. Not four years!

Our neighbours did some work recently on a couple of nights when the generator started up at 8.30pm, I gritted my teeth and let them carry on, but 4 years............no way!!

pretty sensible this doesn't apply to individuals, or the only time someone working full time would ever be able to do DIY is on a Saturday morning, which is huely unreasonable and would take FOREVER.

I understand the OP's frustration though - I'd be tearing my hair out over 4 years. thank goodness winter is coming at least.
