To get a tattoo that's very visible as a teacher?

I've been teaching for over a decade. I have several tattoos and only one is visible and it's on my foot.

I'm debating a tattoo of a lotus flower on my lower arm.

As a parent how would you feel if your child's teacher was tattooed? If you employ teachers how would you feel?

In a mainstream school I'd probably be surprised to see it. Our school wouldn't employ someone with visible tattoos.

It wouldn't make me think any more/less of you - unless it said 'Kids are twats' or 'Football Team' type things 😁

However, if my teen idolised you I'd probably be a little bit 'oh fuckitynfuck I hope DC doesn't go & get one the minute they can'. 😖

A lot of senco/respite/specialist care staff we've had the pleasure to have been helped by had tattoos - they were all fab, with or without, and frankly they could have had 'all parents are wankers' tattooed on their foreheads & I couldn't have cared less 😁

I think as a senco you can probably carry it off and cover it up for interviews 😬

LifeLong13 · 09/10/2016 00:51

Worra you're right as to say people are entitled to an opinion. Hence why I haven't ranted at anyone who has said they don't like tattoos. It was more out of curiosity of how many people would not be impressed.

Just don't get "FART" tattooed on your wrist like a bloke who once tried to chat DSis and I up in the Spice of Life pub. Grin

LifeLong13 · 09/10/2016 00:54

Needabanner there are days I debate a "kids are twats" tattoo but it wouldn't fit across my knuckles Wink

However Rubbish may have stumbled upon a fab idea for me along with Wellies idea Grin

I had a tattoo at 17. Never regretted it and it certainly wasn't the norm 30 years ago. I am also a teacher. The tattoo has nothing to do with my teaching, is pretty And seen by everyone when I am in a skirt/dress

TeacherBob · 09/10/2016 00:58

I don't care but most schools I know say you have to have them covered

NeedABanner · 09/10/2016 01:00

FUCKN TWATS 😬

Let us know what you decide!

LifeLong13 · 09/10/2016 01:02

Needabanner FUCKN TWAT still wouldn't work as it would read as Fuck N Twat.....also I can't really pull them up on poor spelling if my knuckles are spelt incorrectly.

I don't trust people without tattoos.
But that's me - I'm not a teacher and I work with a bunch of miserable older women. Every time they see someone's tattoo on FB they make nasty comments.
I make sure mine are hidden very well :-)
I would be delighted if my kid had an inked teacher.

LifeLong13 · 09/10/2016 01:05

Maybe I could have Love & Cake instead of Love & Hate? Would that upset people? Grin

Viviene · 09/10/2016 01:05

KDS R TWTS ?! Would fit : p

LifeLong13 · 09/10/2016 01:06

Viviene Im actually laughing out loud. Maybe I should ask MN to change the title to "I'm having my knuckles tattooed. I'm a teacher- what should they say?" GrinGrinGrin

I have loads on show. I am a nurse assistant in a hospital.

Often work with children.

Would have no issues with a teacher with a visible tattoo (obviously). If anyone does it's their problem. They are as common as anything.

RubbishMantra · 09/10/2016 01:20

Just looked at Wellies images. The one of the child reminded me of a tat that an horrendous ex had - his child inked on his chest. Either the tat artist was taking the piss, or ex had a horror film child.

I'm actually thinking of having one done, (ink free so far) of a small Kingfisher bird on the nape of my neck.

I really didn't realise people were still judged on body art anymore. In spite of me being a bit of a hypocrite about Fart Wrist bloke.

dovesong · 09/10/2016 01:51

I think that sounds fab. I would be happy to see a teacher with some ink like that because I'd think they were creative, artistic and liberal.

seven201 · 09/10/2016 03:17

Staff uniform policies in some academies would not allow it to be on show. You'd get very hot!

BlossomHillOne · 09/10/2016 07:45

I really wouldn't like it - I've never seen one that I think enhances the appearance of the person wearing it - rightly or wrongly I would judge a teacher with one one show.

birdsdestiny · 09/10/2016 07:58

It doesnt matter what we think does it. It doesnt matter what the parents or kids think. It matters what your employers and prospective employers think. I know lots of schools that have a policy about keeping tattoos covered. I just think it may curtail what you wear. That would drive me mad but I hate being too hot Grin

honkinghaddock · 09/10/2016 08:01

Ds's teacher has several visible ones as do a large number of the other staff at his special school. A few at his former mainstream school did as well. Doesn't bother me at all. I judge a teacher purely on how they are with him.

jessica29054 · 09/10/2016 08:03

I know lots of teachers with visible tattoos.

I don't like them personally and I think it's advisable to get them in places that can be covered up easily should you need to but there is no definitive reason why your job should have any bearing on this.

However, it will put some places off.

coffeemaker5 · 09/10/2016 08:05

I couldn't care less. It won't have any impact on your ability to teach.

Zame · 09/10/2016 08:05

Wouldn't bother me at all. It's always so strange to see how many people on mumsnet say they hate them! I don't get it, they're mainstream, you're not being forced to get one so what's your problem? I like looking at people's tattoos, I think it's similar to the way I read all the posters in the dentist waiting room, gives the eyes something to do.
I don't think anyone at all gets a tattoo these days and thinks they're being alternative. It's just decorating your skin, like putting on jewellery or make up

SnugglySnerd · 09/10/2016 08:09

I don't think it would go down well in a lot of schools. After all, teaching is a profession where men are still expected to wear ties, where skirts have to come to the knee and hair can only be "natural" colours. That's at my school anyway!

Thornrose · 09/10/2016 08:10

The teacher that most made a difference to dd has many tattoos. She has a nose piercing and her hair changes weekly.

She's amazing. Funnily enough it's a special school!

I think teachers working with children with SNs have to be fairly special themselves. They are able to be much more creative in their teaching methods to find what works best.
