To ask you how the hell I can magically fit into this dress?!

So, I've got a wedding in a couple of weeks and the dress I bought is still too tight - about an inch gap down the back to being able to do the zip up. Any wise mumsnetters know of a magic body sucker inner-er or some other form of voodoo to ensure I can get this dress on? Cheers!

Several hot epsom salts baths.

MrsHiddleston · 08/10/2016 19:20

With a 2 inch gap and only a few weeks there is no way you'll fit into that dress, no matter what underwear you buy. Really, don't waste money and time, buy a new dress.

Toddlerwhatwhywhat · 08/10/2016 19:20

Hefzi - thanks so much, anyway you could link me to something that is a proper one as I have no idea! Thanks again.

Just go to a dressmaker and have it adjusted.

notagiraffe · 08/10/2016 19:24

I was going to suggest a super low cal very low carb crash diet plus bikram yoga. But if you are breastfeeding still it probably can't be done. Just go to some good charity shops and find another beautiful vintage dress that fits you, and enjoy the wedding. BF-ing is not the time to be trying to lose half a stone in a few days.

RollerDiscoQueen · 08/10/2016 19:24

I had a bridesmaid dress arrive from China a week before my friend's wedding. It was teeny weeny but the dressmaker performed magical miracles and all was well.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 08/10/2016 19:25

I really think you'll be so uncomfortable all trussed up and it will look tight.

Will you be able to sit comfortably, eat, drink and dance in it? (major components of a wedding Grin)
It's worth a try if you are desperate to wear this dress but maybe formulate a plan B (a different dress) just in case.

notagiraffe · 08/10/2016 19:25

Yes - you could get a dressmaker to alter it. They could add a panel at the back and reset the zip. That's a great idea.

hefzi · 08/10/2016 19:28

So there's this or this one - I've bought from both of these makers before, and they are excellent: or for something cheaper, how about this?

Basically, you want it a) coming from the UK and b) with as many steel bones as possible, as that is stronger to pull you in. 2 inches isn't a massive reduction in corset terms, so should be easily achievable for you without being uncomfy or needing loads of preparation etc I'd recommend an underbust style, as I find the overbust add on to the bulk round the bustline - which is fine if that's what you're after, but less fine if your outfit already fits well there!

There's quite a wide range of colours and options out there, so have a hunt around - prices also vary if you want to add suspender clips etc Basically, the ones you want to avoid are those with suspenders already attached, that can't be removed - those are "bedroom wear" - and anything with ribbon instead of laces at the back: it's the laces that help pull you in.

hefzi · 08/10/2016 19:31

Oh - and anything that includes waist training or tight lacing in the description will also be a "proper" one: traditionally, they are sized in waist sizes, but check each description, as on eBay, they are advertised in all sorts of weird and wonderful ways!

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/10/2016 19:32

I don't think you should go too low calorie if you are breastfeeding. There is time to get the dress altered. Eating low carb will make you loose weight because eating carb makes your body retain water. Eat plenty of vegetables cooked in olive oil, butter or rapeseed oil and not much fruit. Stick to fruit like grapefruit, oranges, strawberries, blueberries. IE low sugar fruit. Eat plenty of protein and don't be afraid to eat fat including animal fat. Don't eat too much fat or nuts to maximise weight loss. Or good quality source fat. This makes breakfast stuff like meat and veg as porridge is carb for example. If you do this diet, you may go through carb flu.

KC225 · 08/10/2016 19:32

Check eBay. Look for nice dresses under Boden, Autogtaph, Hobbs you can pick something nice pretty cheap

Toddlerwhatwhywhat · 08/10/2016 19:35

Thanks SO much hefzi will have a good look later, got to do bedtime now. Thanks again, majorly appreciated 😀

Has anyone suggested Spanx tights yet? Love mine and not too uncomfortable...

Toddlerwhatwhywhat · 08/10/2016 19:35

Thanks everyone!

Dukan + 30 day shred. You will hate it. And be miserable. But it will sort that gap in 10 days. I know this because the seamstress took my wedding dress in a good inch and a half too far, a week before my wedding and this was my last resort!

PandoraMole · 08/10/2016 19:40

Go to a dressmaker and get them to remove the zip and covert it to a corset back if its within budget.

Will give you much more flexibility for future wearing, especially
if your size tends to vary, and will look fab.

CrazyNameCrazyGuy · 08/10/2016 19:45

YWBU to buy such an important item of clothing in a size that you knew was too small for you.

Strict diet and shapewear or find someone pronto who can do alterations.

Haroldplaystheharmonica · 08/10/2016 19:46

I cut out the obvious carbs a few weeks ago (bread, biscuits, cakes, pasta, rice, potatoes) and noticed a difference after a week. I'm really into it now as a fasted before and never noticed as much of a difference as when low carbing. Plus I'd exercise more than you normally do!

CrazyNameCrazyGuy · 08/10/2016 19:47

Ignore my previous post, I seem to have missed your comment

"The dress was given to me yesterday and is a size bigger than my 'size' so I didn't envisage any problems....."

NoBetterName · 08/10/2016 20:05

As a PP said, get the zip removed from the back and a corset back put in by a dressmaker. If it's a vintage style, it should look fab.

SheldonCRules · 08/10/2016 20:08

I'm confused, the first post says you bought it so take it back and get the correct size. However it's now changed to its ultra special and was a gift yesterday.

Just buy or exchange for something that actually fits.

TrillKitten · 08/10/2016 20:09

I think the fact your OP contains the word "magically" means you know this isn't reasonable. Buy a new one or get it altered, clothes are supposed to fit you, not you them Flowers

elodie2000 · 08/10/2016 20:16

Alterations are usually done in about a week. Take it in on Monday. Get it altered, you'll feel uncomfortable in a corset & crash diets are just stupid.
