To think I am too old for going Out Out?

YappyYapster · 08/10/2016 15:29

We went to the cinema and then dinner, which was fine. And then someone suggested cocktails and it went a bit wrong.

We were dancing round our handbags surrounded by actual children. The outfit I had thought made me look glam and pulled together actually made me look like a middle aged housewife (which I am) compared to the tiny outfits the girls were all wearing. Even the bouncers and bar staff were toddlers, but with hipster beards. Seriously, I have underwear older than most people we encountered.

Do 30/40 somethings just not go out for cocktails and dancing anymore? Is that it? Have I reached my shelf life for partying? Is my (once a year) night out destined to be country pubs and bed by eleven pm, just so I don't look like a desperate old woman trying to recreate my youth?

Where are all the fun adults these days?

That will be me tonight. I love a good dance around my handbag, while I throw some shapes out. Grin

Nemo1986 · 08/10/2016 15:34

I don't think you are too old, I just think you chose the wrong venue. There are lots of places for 30+ to have fun, especially in larger towns and cities. Try again elsewhere next time :-)

Eolian · 08/10/2016 15:36

Dunno. But then I didn't do dancing when I was 20 so I'm not likely to start now. Cocktails however... Just drink them in grown-up places.

AidingAndAbetting · 08/10/2016 15:36

Why did it go wrong? Did you not enjoy yourself?

I am 36 and went out for cocktails and then a club last weekend. My friends and I had a fantastic time. I give zero fucks what anyone else thought. I think the other patrons were a mix of ages but I can't really remember.

YappyYapster · 08/10/2016 15:39

Oh god no, I had a brilliant time. I think The Fear has set in now and I'm feeling mortified about the show I made of myself in front of all the hot young things.

I gave zero fucks about it last night. Grin

They won't have given you a second thought.

YappyYapster · 08/10/2016 15:53

Probably.

So where do actual adults go Out? There are three cocktail bars in our town, one is full of kids, one is dead after ten pm and one is as dull as fuck (it's a hipster place with birdcages and gnomes and shit).

I'm 39 and I go out for cocktails/drinks with friends now and them and often go for a meal and a few bottles of wine.

Nightclub, not a cat in hells chance. I loved it when younger but now I'm not waiting half hour at a bar and listening to music that hurts my ears.

Do whatever you enjoy OP

I8toys · 08/10/2016 16:14

Oh god nightclubs are grim. I'm 44 and I go to gigs. Last week it was 02 Manchester to see Of mice and Men - old enough to be everyone's mum but I love it. Live music is the only night out I will consider along with a good meal.

treaclesoda · 08/10/2016 16:20

I was just remarking to a friend the other day that I remember my dad saying to me when I was about 20 that he hoped I would grow out of wanting to go 'out'. I tutted as only a 20 year old can and declared that I would never grow out of it. I'm now 41 and I haven't been in a nightclub for ten years and hope never to be in one again. I'm all about being able to sit down with my drink, and not having to shout to be heard Grin

bumblejee · 08/10/2016 16:23

I don't think so, I go out every Friday night drinks & dancing & I'm 44!

CwtchMeQuick · 08/10/2016 16:31

I was in a nightclub a few years ago and must have been 19/20 and my and my friend made friends with two women that were 38. We promised each other that would be us in 20 years Grin the sad truth is we're barely mid twenties and we can't hack it. Enjoy yourself I say!

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 08/10/2016 16:41

I have a policy of not doing anything socially that means being up after 10 pm. Call it boring but it suits me and several of my friends are similar. We can do plenty of things in the day, or early evening. I can't imagine a sum of money big enough to bribe me to go to a nightclub.

maddiemookins16mum · 08/10/2016 16:50

I go "out, out", about once a year. It involves pub for wine, dinner somewhere naice and more wine, trendy bar for more wine (and a ciggie by this point 😟), possibly a dance but I'm more likely to be telling the "girls" they are best friends ever etc etc. I couldn't face a club these days, but only because they don't play my sort of music (plus I hate standing huddled round a tall table and not being able to talk shite because I can't hear). I can honestly say I've not been in a nightclub in approx 17 years (I'm 52). However, if you enjoy it I say go for it!!!

mumofthemonsters808 · 08/10/2016 16:52

I really believe there is a gap in the market for middle aged nightclubs, sometimes after a few drinks, I want to go on to somewhere, just for a dance, but I don't want to be the oldest swinger in town. The music needs to be right and I need to be surrounded by older people. I go and watch a lot of tribute acts, which after alcohol, my mind thinks, it's seeing the real deal. The audience is always older and full of fun loving middle aged folk, who have not lost the will to live yet.

FlameGrower · 08/10/2016 16:53

I thought nightclubs were dying a death anyway? I read an article about how they were shutting down all over the country.

Personally I've never been a fan of clubs even when I was 21 but I am a fan of the odd late night. Late bars are so much better I find. I wish more (decent) bars stayed open until 3.

FlameGrower · 08/10/2016 16:55

And I meant to say, you're never too old to go Out Out! I'd ask someone to shoot me now if I thought the rest of my life would be made up of evenings that involved being home by 9 and tucked up in bed by 10.

YappyYapster · 08/10/2016 17:09

It wasn't a nightclub we were in, it's a cocktail bar. There isn't a dance floor but people were dancing anyway. I haven't been in a nightclub for ten years.

Middle aged nightclubs is a brilliant idea.

We go to local gigs mainly, with cover bands. You soon find out which bands you'd be willing to see again and can have a bit of a dance without anybody caring what you look like.

queenMab99 · 08/10/2016 17:17

I use my bus pass to go to gigs, some of the musicians are as old as me, if they're not too old, neither am I.

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 08/10/2016 17:23

Yappy you mean with a quiet area, somewhere to get an Ovaltine or Horlicks and maybe a knitting corner? Footwear would be slippers Grin

Muddlingalongalone · 08/10/2016 17:26

This is going to be me in 2hrs time - I think I'll be heading for the tube home by 10 though!

BoJolly · 08/10/2016 17:26

I'm 54 but, to be honest, was "over" nightclubs in my early 20's. I preferred a lock in at the local pub where me and my friends could talk shite for hours and stagger home without having to do the taxi rank shuffle.

To entice me to a nightclub now - you'd have to hand out tea, toast & slippers at midnight. Grin

squoosh · 08/10/2016 17:27

There's a middle aged club night in Glasgow called Hip Replacement.
