Being classed as lazy because I drive

A Facebook friend commented last night about how parents who drive, and drive their kids here there and everywhere are lazy and are making them lazy. A few people commented and basically told her straight that they need their cars and she replied by saying kids should walk every where and the fact they don't is why they are getting fat!

Well firstly she tried to pass her test and failed three times so clearly she is a hopeless driver. Secondly she doesn't walk everywhere with her own kids, she gets lifts from all of her family and friends. I just commented and told her straight that if I didn't drive my kids wouldn't have half of the opportunities they do. They wouldn't be able to go to the school's they do as they are a bit out of the way and take too long to get to on public transport. They wouldn't be able to attend their after school activities as again they are too far out. They wouldn't be able to have days outs and holidays up and down the country like they do. I could have turned it around on her and said that parents who rely on family members for lifts or drag their kids around on public transport are lazy and selfish but I held back. I just don't know what her problem is.

DS's school is about 300m away. Now I'm not working we walk/ scoot/ bike. When I was working full time, I found myself in the ridiculous position where to drop him off at the earliest 8am, and be at work in a nearby town by 8.30 and drop DS2 off at nursery off en route, I needed to park the car in the carpark across the road from the school. Adding a few minutes on by walking with a 3 year old simply wasn't viable in that timescale as it would have made me too late for work. (Most days DH and I split the childcare runs, so these were the occasions when I had to do it solo)

I am much happier walking where possible, but sometimes it simply isn't practical to do everything at walking pace.

Although I could have got to that place of work by bus, (and did so happily as a one-off when my car had a flat battery; DH dealt with the drop offs and I managed a random early finish) I couldn't have managed work and childcare arrangements without driving.
