To be a bit upset with this visit from the RSPCA

While i was in town doing the grocery shop the RSPCA came round to our home and spoke to DH about our 15 year old cat.
He said our cat was looking a bit thin. DH explained that our cat has a thyroid condition. Which she is on medication for One pill a day in her food.
DH also pointed out the collar she is wearing. The RSPCA officer didnt know what it was. Its a dermatological collar She has something similar to dermatitis. The collar treats it and gets renewed every six months. He didnt even ask about it much less know what it was DH had to tell him. DH also showed him vets bills , told him about the regular trips to the vet including a visit to an emergency vet at 3am one morning when her back legs kept giving way. He wanted to come in and see her so DH let him in.
DH told him not to pick her up or stress her out and he just touched her head.

After that he said that she is obviously being looked after and he left.

But last year they told me to leave my elderly cat outside overnight in favour of a snake that had found its way into my flat. And i told them on the phone then that my cat is/was elderly.

They didnt seem concerned then.
Im really worried that they are going to come and take her away from us. We have had her for 15 years She used to belong to an ex neighbour but decided she preferred it here with us.

She has brought and still brings us a lot of joy. We love her so much. We go without things so she can get her treatment. But we dont mind cos she is MORE than worth it.

She may be coming to the end of her life and we want to make her time that she has left with us as enjoyable and stress free as possible.

Last years thread when i was told to leave her outside all night.

But god yes, Rosie's story - so AWFUL. :(

kali110 · 11/10/2016 21:06

Omg this thread has made me cry Sad
My boy is old and skinny.
In good health, just very old!
He had an accident a while back and was missing for a few days.
Thankfully after a (large) op he's his old self but i was devestated.
I would be heartbroken if someone had taken him and put him down.
I treat him like royalty, my pets eat better than me Grin
Think me and dh would be arrested if we found out the rspca had taken him Angry
I've never liked the rspca.
We called them a few times as we found abondon dogs tied and dumped by the road, baby animals injured and they were never interested. Wanted us to go and get them. Angry
We did everytime and took them to a local santuary. Never bothered with them again. Complete waste of time.
I'm so sorry to the posters on here for your losses Flowers

HelenaDove · 11/10/2016 21:26

Rosie thats horrific and its because i knew it had happened to pets and their owners thats why i was so worried.

Im now scared of letting her out. Oh we let her out but worry while she is out.

Rosie...........when did it happen.

kali110 · 12/10/2016 02:42

hel yes this has seriously worried me.
Don't have to worry about others as they certainly aren't skinny, but our one is really thin.
We'd been keeping him in more
For over a year but he's been a permanent One since his accident at start of this year.
Hhe's got bad eyes and does look like he has something wrong but he's in good health.
He only has to start sneezing and he gets checked out!
Really worried incase he does happen to escape. For an elderly cat he can move when he wants Grin

HelenaDove · 12/10/2016 02:45

He sounds so similar to Dovecat Smile

kali110 · 12/10/2016 18:00

hel they are characters aren't they!
I love all mine, but have to admit, he has a special place in my heart.
Was having a hard time when he decided to adopt me from the mil. Grin

HelenaDove · 12/10/2016 18:33

Dovecat decided she preferred us to the neighbour who originally owned her. That was nearly 15 years ago.

The vet printed off her medical records for us so we can prove she is well cared for and DH picked it up on Monday afternoon.

DH asked them when he got there how much it was but they dont charge for it so he gave them £10 to donate to Cats Protection.

That was really nice of him!
Ours used to belong to a relative, but he changed his mind when i came on the scene Grin
Probably because he gets absolutely spoilt and can never do anything wrong!

Rosie Thanks

Dovecat was taken to a vet last night due to spots of blood coming from her back passage. She was pooing a lot and also vomited.

So she was taken straight to the emergency vet who diagnosed a urinary tract infection and gave her a mild antibiotic injection. She will be having a follow up visit at our regular vets tomorrow . Today she has been eating quite a lot and the emergency vet weighed her and she has put ON weight.

We have put last nights medical printout with the regular vets medical record.

She has been sleeping a lot today which usually happens after an antibiotic injection.

I am struggling with the RSPCA bashing on this thread. Admittedly I have had no direct contact with them - but the RSPCA staff in the Dog Rescuers programme seem pretty much heroic to me Confused

OP I can see why you were upset but I think you can be confident that after the visit today you won't be troubled again.

HelenaDove · 16/10/2016 23:51

The visit was over a week ago. Im just updating the thread with how Dovecat is.

i was reported to the rspca by a bitter neighbour, they did theie checks and i never heard from them again. Try not to worry

kali110 · 17/10/2016 14:47

hmcAsWas it's not bashing, posters have had bad experiences with the rspca.
I always thought they were caring, adverts, tv shows, till we actually needed them.
Right now there is an injured dog in my area and they don't want to know Angryl thankgod for my caring locals.

helena poor dovecat! Hope they are feeling better now! My old one is also at the vets Grin think he's keeping me on my toes!

littleprincesssara · 17/10/2016 15:09

I've also had bad experiences with the RSPCA - ignoring complaints I made about a neglected dog, and refusing to let me adopt for not having a cage that actually would have been dangerous.

It's silly to base any opinion on a TV show - they're hardly going to put anything on the TV that doesn't show them in the best light possible!

sianihedgehog · 17/10/2016 15:16

I found a cat with a frankly horrifying head injury which had hidden itself inside a cavity wall at a local supermarket car park, and called the RSPCA. They came out within hours, cut a hole in the wall to get him out, nursed him back to some degree of health and rehomed him despite his continuing neurological problem making him a bit wobbly. I'm sure that mistakes do get made, and that as with any organisation they are better in some places than in others, but I'm generally glad they are there.

OP, I wouldn't worry. In a strange coincidence some friends of mine have just reported an elderly thin cat to the RSPCA so they can check up on its welfare. It's very probably just that someone who regularly passes your cat and says hello has just rung them to be sure. They've checked up, found out that she's well cared for, and nothing else will come of it. I'd rather they checked up than didn't.

carefreeeee · 17/10/2016 15:38

There may be someone around who thinks your cat is pooing in their garden/catching birds/just doesn't like cats?

That may be why they reported you?

There are some odd people about

HelenaDove · 17/10/2016 15:42

Dovecat is back from her follow up check.

The regular vet says shes fine and confirms that shes put on weight.

That's great to hear op!

Janey50 · 18/10/2016 17:57

RosieSW - OMG that is absolutely awful. My heart goes out to you.

MaddyHatter · 18/10/2016 18:24

i've only had good experiences with them, but i've only had to use them once , and it was to report my neighbours for neglect.. i later found out that 2 other neighbours had also reported them.

She was an old girl about 20yrs old... she spent most of her time in our back garden, if it rained she curled up by our back door which has a covered porchway.

It was deadly cold, that year it was all snow and dropping to -18 here in the midlands overnight.. she looked ill, so skinny, her fur was falling out, her eyes looked dull, no lights in them at all. Over a period of 3 months she was constantly meowing at their back door to be let in, and i used to go knock their door to tell them to let her in.. she was out in all weathers... but i felt a 20+yr old cat being out in the snow and freezing cold was absolutely unacceptable. She should have been in the warm being loved and cared for.

IT was after one day where she'd been out ALL DAY in the snow in minus temps and they didn't let her in once despite her desperately meowing, that i just had enough and reported them.

The cat was removed.
