Do you smoke or not? And what about the rest of your family?
We're an all smokers family...

Just Googled 'Povvo' and Urban Dictionary came up with this...

Top Definition
povvo
Poor individual (Australian Slang). Short bastardisation of word "poverty".
That stupid fucktard is such a povvo bastard!

Which just goes to prove my point further about how some MNetters think they're above those with addictions.

Well at least nicotine addictions anyway...

maddiemookins16mum · 08/10/2016 18:06

A povvo is slang for poor people (I googled it). Nice (not).
People smoke, most don't (for a number of reasons).
Each to their own. I have a friend who unfriended someone irl (the loveliest person I know) because she smoked once on a night out, following the most horrendous split with a long time partner, I never understood why you would do that just because someone smoked.

WaitrosePigeon · 08/10/2016 18:12

Ah, poor people.

Maxtington, my house was valued at 1.7 million last week.

MrsMook · 08/10/2016 18:21

I'm the only one in my family to have never smoked. Some have given up. The others are light smokers. My "dad" smoked cigars until his first heart attack at 48. He stopped completely then, but increased his snack intake and gained weight which will have contributed to his fatal heart attack at 53.

As a teenager, my closest friends didn't smoke. Some of my wider friends did, but I didn't have much peer pressure to start. On the few occasions I was offered a try, it was always accepted when I refused.

Food is essential and can't be avoided. Alcohol is culturally normal and most people consume alcohol with minimum inconvenience to others. There is also some debatable level of health benefit. Smoking has been known to be damaging to health for many decades and is unpleasant to be around which is why public tolerance for it has declined. Bans in workplaces and enclosed public spaces has denormalised it for many people. Having grown up in a house full of smokers, I was conditioned not to notice it when it was still accepted in places like pubs. Now I rarely encounter it, I really notice it from quite a distance when in places like parks. Smokers don't realise how pungent it is, partly because they're used to it, and partly because it often damages their sense of smell.

SpookyPotato · 08/10/2016 18:27

I have been surrounded by smokers all my life but never quite managed to become addicted no matter how hard I tried as a teen! I couldn't take it back..
Parents smoke (dad died from lung cancer and mum has several lung conditions)
One brother smokes, one doesn't.
Partner smokes
All inlaws smoke

It's an awful addiction but can be so hard to beat, especially for the older generation who have always done it.
Out of all the people I know my age (30) I would say a third smoke.

syntheticharmony · 08/10/2016 18:35

Both sides of my mum and dads family's smoke. Majority of my mums have given up although my grandmother and sister still do. I gave up over a year ago and now at the point where I struggle being around the smell.

syntheticharmony · 08/10/2016 18:35

And all my friends smoke!

NicknameUsed · 08/10/2016 18:40

I don't dislike people who smoke. I dislike the habit. My favourite cousin smokes and so does one of my nieces. I don't like either of them any the less for smoking.

NicknameUsed · 08/10/2016 18:41

I would be interested to know how old all these people are who smoke.

stabbybitch · 08/10/2016 18:45

I smoke ( too much, about 30 a day) cannot stop I cry if I can't have one its fucking awful
DP smokes, not a lot, could give up if he wanted.
DM never smoked, her parents did, still do.
DaD just gave up as he had a heart attack aged 46!

Mrstumbletap · 08/10/2016 18:46

I don't
My Sister does
My DH used to
My DF used to
My DM used to - but died of lung cancer

80% of my friends don't, a handful still do but keep trying to give up.

Mrstumbletap · 08/10/2016 18:47

Why my sister still does after our mum died at 57 from smoking, I don't know.

BuggersMuddle · 08/10/2016 18:49

We don't and very few friends do (mid-30s). PIL and DM gave up years ago. DF still does and I do worry about him.

Two branches of the extended family still smoke and in those it's down to even the 20-somethings, which I do think is a bit sad given how much knowledge we have today vs even when my parents started.

TBH I can't get my head around how the very young or people on low incomes can afford to smoke heavily. Not in a value judgement way at all because I know it's an addiction, but a heavy smoking habit is pretty expensive these days. Even when I was at uni, the few smokers tended to have a few skinny roll-ups a day and it's got even more expensive.

fakenamefornow · 08/10/2016 18:53

I don't, DH doesn't, neither of us ever has.

My mum smoked my whole childhood and like a pp I resent her for it. It stank, was bad for all of our health and was always at the top of the shopping list. We were poor and so this meant no money for much anything else, even the food budget as reduced to prioritise her smoking.

Sallystyle · 08/10/2016 19:01

I was a 40 a day smoker until nearly 4 years ago. I now vape.

DH quit about 3 years ago and now vapes.

My dad smoked heavily until he had a heart attack a couple of years ago, my mum smoked for a few years as a teen but quit way before she had children.

My brother smoked but now vapes. I have 4 other siblings who smoke but 4 who never smoked. I have 4 nephew/nieces who smoke.

I have one friend who smokes. The others quit a few years ago.

DH's dad smoked lightly until 3 years ago. DH's nan smoked like a trooper but that is it on his side.

NicknameUsed · 08/10/2016 19:05

It was like that for us fakename we didn't have a TV or a car because all the spare money went on fags.

I agree Muddle. With today's knowledge and education I can't understand why young people take up smoking in the first place. It isn't considered "big" or "cool" by DD and her peers. She is 16 and she and her friends are somewhat scathing about teenagers they know who smoke. How can they be addicted at 15/16?

hollinhurst84 · 08/10/2016 19:06

Buggers - I have NO idea how I afforded 30 a day up until 4 months ago. Now I'm not smoking I'm shocked how I did

temporarync84 · 08/10/2016 19:19

I don't know anyone who smokes, no family or friends do (thankfully, hate the smell and wouldn't let Dc spend time around smokers).

My Dad smoked when I was growing up and I resent him for it

Jengnr · 08/10/2016 19:20

Gave up almosr five years ago. Don't miss it on a day to day basis but every now and again I get a pang of pure loss when I see someone smoking. Loss and envy.

There's lots of good and worthy reasons not to smoke and on a day to day basis I'm glad I don't any more but smoking was fucking brilliant and I miss it.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 08/10/2016 19:29

With today's knowledge and education I can't understand why young people take up smoking in the first place.

Denial? They can stop whenever they want, they're not going to become junkies, they're not going to get lung cancer or COPD, they don't stink...

And some of them don't and some of them do.

WorraLiberty · 08/10/2016 19:46

It's actually just occurred to me that I haven't seen a teenager/young person smoking a cigarette in years.

And due to my job (Lollipop Lady), I must see well over 100 teens/young people walk past/over the crossing every single day.

I've seen a few smoking joints outside the local shops/at the park, but not cigarettes.

BuggersMuddle · 08/10/2016 20:10

Worra I wish I could say the same, but I actually had some local problematic kids turn up at my door smoking cigarettes. All looking about 11-12 years old. They weren't even bothered.

The kids I went to school with would've gone out their way to hide their smoking from all local adults and while I do technically live in a city, I'm in a suburb with it's own identity, plenty people here for years etc. They just didn't give a shit. (Although that's a whole different problem of which their smoking at such a young age is merely a symptom).

When I see young kids smoking joints I worry. When I see adults or near adults smoking joints, I just wish / hope they wouldn't mix tobacco tbh.

Munstermonchgirl · 08/10/2016 20:14

I couldn't give a shit if other people choose to smoke. In fact I'm quite grateful when I walk past a smoker and can get a nostalgic whiff (I smoked occasionally as a teenager) while knowing that they're taking the hit financially and health wise Grin
The smell isn't too bad while someone is actually smoking- it's the fact they smell like a stale ashtray afterwards. Even worse when they think a squirt of perfume and a mint will cover up the smell on them and their clothes.

However, I really cannot fathom why anyone with children smokes. The stats are very clear that having one or both parents as a smoker increases the chance of the young person becoming a smoker. That fact Alone would put me off massively.

StrongTeaHotShower · 08/10/2016 20:33

Absolutely no one in my family smoke. Many, many of my partners family including himself are smokers. I don't judge. I know about addiction.

Miloarmadillo1 · 08/10/2016 20:34

My grandparents generation all smoked, and all died young and horribly of smoking related diseases. Parents on both sides don't smoke and to my knowledge never did, DH smoked the odd cigarette at uni but never had a habit and has not smoked for 20yrs. I've never smoked and I've made sure my children are told from an impressionable age how vile it is and shown graphic images of diseased lungs etc. I may have over-egged it a bit as if they ever see a smoker they tend to remark loudly 'that man is smoking and he's going to DIE'. I'm a vet and I frequently treat animals that come in reeking of smoke, wheezing and coughing. If you are inflicting your smoke on other adults, children or pets then you are very definitely BU.
