When I find it highly amusing when other people fall over?

It just makes me LOL, I can't help it.

OP posts:
nannynobnobs · 27/06/2010 00:37

I skidded horribly once, on a slanted metal drain cover that was wet from rain. I blew a load of snot out of my nose and flung my arms out like I'd been tasered, it was soooo undignified... I heard the people behind me snickering, and I was crying with laughter for the rest of my journey!
My dad once slipped off a kerb, into a puddle, hands jammed in jeans pockets, flat on his back. He said it was a good fall wasted because nobody saw.

Alambil · 27/06/2010 00:57

my friend once walked into a lamp post

I was incapacitated with laughter - she saw the funny side too... we both looked like we'd been drinking or something, doubled up in the street with tears streaming down our cheeks

RedBlueRed · 27/06/2010 01:19

I think a little empathy goes a long way.

If a friend of mine has a mishap and is clearly happy to laugh it off I will go along with it however I have been known to make an arse of myself to detract attention when it was clear my friend wasn't dealing with the situation so well.

Its not nice to laugh at someone who is in discomfort so by your op I would say YABU.

Quattrocento · 27/06/2010 01:28

Actually quite irate about this. DH has a neurological condition which has a fairly common symptom of falling regularly. I absolutely hate the thought that he and his fellow sufferers are amusement-fodder for people. Or a certain type of person, anyway.

Morloth · 27/06/2010 09:05

I used to have a boss who would regularly walk into the glass door between his office and mine, this continued after I put up red tape to help him spot when it was closed, it was pretty funny.

Lewisfan I was once out with an extremely drunk friend and he walked into a lamppost, he fell swore his head off at the lamppost and then got up and did it again, it was so funny, he was angry with the post.

Then again I have been out with a friend who tripped accidentally and that wasn't funny at all.

nannynobnobs · 27/06/2010 11:59

I once had a friend who was so drunk that he bent over to pick up something he'd dropped, somehow stood on his fingers, then stood up- breaking his fingers

CoupleofKooks · 27/06/2010 12:02

peculiar thread to revive
i got excited when i saw filly, then realised it was 3 years old!

PuppyMonkey · 27/06/2010 12:04

Me and a friend were once walking down the road when she walked straight into a post in classic comedy fashion. She quite hurt herself but I couldn't help her as I was pmsl so much. She was q cross with me.

PuppyMonkey · 27/06/2010 12:07

Oh it's old is it? I always fall for these ones.

Bucharest · 27/06/2010 12:07

And it's as repulsive a thread now as it was 3 yrs ago.

Agree with Quattrocentro.

Bucharest · 27/06/2010 12:08

PS You'd all have loved it then when my grandfather, the day after his 60th wedding anniversary went out to buy the bread, fell over, banged his head and as a result he and my grandmother had to go in a home where they both died.

Fucking right laugh for us all that was.

jazzchickens · 27/06/2010 12:59

I'm a tad disappointed as I've just realised how old the thread is. I was getting excited about the prospect of snow tomorrow!

JenniferCanesten · 27/06/2010 14:09

I have a very old wooden stool with one loose leg. Was sitting in front of the computer when I heard a noise behind me, so looked round to see what it was...and toppled onto the floor. The noise was the leg falling off the stool.

I had laughing fit for ages, was very Chaplinesque.

whoneedssleepanyway · 27/06/2010 14:33

one night on holiday with DH years ago we had quite a few cocktails in the bar after dinner, i headed off to the ladies, DH watched me come out of the ladies and i slipped on something and he said it was like i was on waterskis i was just gliding towards the ornamental coi-carp pond, i literally got to the edge and grabbed hold of something and stopped myself from going in. i imagine quite a few people had a good laugh!

don't like it went people really hurt themselves though.

Tiredmumno1 · 27/06/2010 14:42

i also need to ask, why revive a thread thats 3 years old. boring and stupid imo. if you were bored start a new thread.

Thistledew · 27/06/2010 15:50

Of course it is not funny if someone is hurt, but I had always wondered if there is some evolutionary reason for finding such accidents funny.

Perhaps it is a hangover from a pre-speach stage of development to help members of the group differentiate between an injury that is going to cause the individual and group mobility problems or an incident that can be brushed off.

I wonder if chimpanzees are amused by slapstick humour?

JenniferCanesten · 27/06/2010 17:49

No, chimps prefer their comedy a little more highbrow.

OrmRenewed · 27/06/2010 17:51

It is funny. My instinct is to laugh but I quash that in case they are hurt, but if they aren't I'm afraid I snigger (inside, only inside of course).

Morloth · 27/06/2010 17:53

I think there is quite a difference in finding a drunk arguing with a lamppost for getting in his way funny and thinking it is funny when an old man falls over and injures himself.

CheekyLittleSox · 27/06/2010 18:41

i was just about to ask where abouts are you in the world to be getting snow tomorrow them looked at the date 7/2/2007

I wouldn't say that I point and laugh at people at all, but that finding it funny is something which automatically happens. If the person is injured or upset then any humour quickly evaporates. I wouldn't obviously laugh at somebody falling down unless they were acting as though it was a silly, light hearted thing.

Jaquelinehyde · 28/06/2010 00:13

Wow three years on and a thread that only got a small handful of replies, suddenly gets lots!

There have been some drastic over reactions to this light hearted thread.

Yes people laugh at others falling over, walking into things, slipping, tripping etc it is in most cases amusing.

Obviously where someone is hurt or upset this is not funny and anyone laughing at that has problems.
