WIBU to take my baby to the go because he's sleeping so much?

About a week ago, I noticed my baby was becoming quite lethargic, wanting to go to bed quite soon after getting up, lying on the ground and seeming exhausted. He is eleven months old. It became progressively worse until Saturday, when I became very concerned and called 111. They recommended an out of hours clinic. Shortly after I hung up, he threw up absolutely everywhere - mega sick. When we were at the out of hours clinic, he was doing unholy smelling farts but no poo. Saw doctor and explained, he checked him over and said probably just a virus. I felt reassured and went home. He had slightly sloppy poo the next day and that was that.

He's still extremely tired. He's not had a temperature at all in the past week, hasn't cried more than usual, hasn't seemed to feel unwell, no more sick or bad poo, but he spent most of yesterday asleep. He had three naps, which he hasn't done since he dropped the third one at six months, and when I went in to wake him up for tea he didn't even try to lift his head because he was so tired - just tried to move his eyes to look at me. He'd normally stand up.

He's just woken up quite a bit later than usual, at ten to 8, had a breastfeed and gone back to sleep. It's making me panic that there is something wrong and it's not just a virus. Would it be unreasonable of me to see the gp even though I saw a doctor on Saturday? Or should I give it a few more days?

No I would say definitely not unreasonable - get him checked out. Flowers

Sophia1984 · 05/10/2016 08:06

I don't think it would be unreasonable at all.

Buggeritimgettingup · 05/10/2016 08:07

Take him. It is probably a virus and it can really wipe them out but better to check.

Sophia1984 · 05/10/2016 08:07

Hope he feels better soon!

Phillipa12 · 05/10/2016 08:07

Take him, best to get properly checked out.

ParisGellar · 05/10/2016 08:09

Not U at all. Hope he is ok Flowers

StarlingMurmuration · 05/10/2016 08:09

I'd go back to the GP if I were you.

We once had what we refer to, wistfully, as the "Day of Sleep" when DS (about 12 month as the time) slept all day. No fever, no sickness, no diarrhea - would wake up to drink milk but then go straight back to sleep. We were obviously worried so took him to our GP, who couldn't find anything wrong with him. He was still sleepy the next morning but better by afternoon, and we still don't know what was going on. But if he hadn't got better over the next day or so, I'd definitely have been back at the doctor's.

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 05/10/2016 08:09

How much sleep is he he having in a day, and how much did he usually have before? How is he when he's awake?

Has anything else changed recently? Dd suddenly started to sleep more around that age as she was much more mobile and was tiring herself out - she had never really been one for naps (half hour max) and almost overnight it became an hour, sometimes more

Marzipants · 05/10/2016 08:13

Not U at all, take him to the GP.

BuffaloCustardbath · 05/10/2016 08:15

Definitely not unreasonable, I hope the GP can shed some light on what's going on for you.

LittleLionMansMummy · 05/10/2016 08:18

I'd say if your instinct is telling you to get him checked out again then do so, if only to put your mind at rest.

By way of reassurance, this sounds like something 5yo ds had a few weeks ago. He was sick just twice, no temp but diarrheoea for a couple of days. Thought he was better so sent him to school, only for the diarrhoea to strike again. His appetite was diminished, he was quite pale, sleeping more than usual yet still had dark circles under his eyes for quite a while after his physical symptoms disappeared. He was like this for well over a week and actually lost quite a lot of weight too. Anyway, he's absolutely fine again now, fully recovered - it did knock him off his feet for a while though. I should think that for a younger child it would be worse, so worth another visit to the GP in case he needs a little help to replace lost nutrients and fight the virus.

Frazzled2207 · 05/10/2016 08:19

Absolutely not. I am always tend to leave things a few days before rushing to gp but when it comes to small kids I have never been fobbed off and get the impression gps would rather see them (again) just in case.
It probably is a virus but good to get a second opinion.

DoinItFine · 05/10/2016 08:25

He is a baby.

You are worried about him.

You know him better than anyone.

Take him to the GP.

Flowers Take care

Sandsnake · 05/10/2016 08:25

I'd take him back, just in case. It might be something similar to what DS has got - he was first sick two weeks ago and it keeps coming back just as we think it's gone. He's sleeping quite a lot too for him. Doc yesterday said probably a virus but asked for samples and said it was definitely the right thing to bring him in. Hope
your DS feels better soon.

GlitteryFluff · 05/10/2016 08:31

Get him seen.

MistressMerryWeather · 05/10/2016 08:37

Take him, yes.

Some reassurance, though - Our whole house came down with this horrible virus last weekend and none of us are 100% better yet.

One of the biggest things I noticed was how tired it makes you, like exhausted to your very bones.

DS2 in particular basically slept for a whole 24 hours.

MistressMerryWeather · 05/10/2016 08:39

it keeps coming back just as we think it's gone.

I have heard a few people say that and I agree, we thought we had DS1 better but he ended up getting sent home from school that morning.

Splandy · 05/10/2016 09:00

Thanks for reassurance. He slept for just over 18 hours yesterday, would normally sleep around 13-14. He seems absolutely fine when he's awake, no indication that there's anything wrong other than tiring very quickly. He didn't even seem ill until he threw up and he was bright as anything after that. He's awake now, seems normal and happy.

My mother in law died while I was pregnant, of a rare and aggressive cancer. She was quite young and we were very close. It's made me worry about one of us becoming seriously ill. Her cancer had no symptoms until it was stage 4 and even then the symptoms were easily brushed off as something else by her Gp. I'm aware that it has caused me to worry a lot more than usual, which is why I wasn't sure whether I was overreacting - I always assume the worst now.

Aw, OP that's only natural.

I'm sorry for your loss. Flowers

Guiltypleasures001 · 05/10/2016 11:28

Hi op

How's his mobility ? Is he often sick at all can he sit up ok, is he normally floppy or poor muscle tone?

ThatStewie · 05/10/2016 11:33

It probably is just a virus but it's always worth getting a GP to check out small babies who are lethargic. Always trust your instincts.

Hope he feels better soon. Flowers

Dontyouopenthattrapdoor · 05/10/2016 11:44

How's he been this morning?

It almost certainly is a virus that's wiped him out but I think getting him checked over is a good idea at this point.

BillSykesDog · 05/10/2016 11:47

Yes, go back to the GP. Just to reassure you though, my baby would be ill and then when he was getting over it sleep a lot to recover. But it's absolutely worth checking.

ollieplimsoles · 05/10/2016 12:08

Oh the poor thing, yes always follow your instinct and take him back to gp. If in doubt, get it checked out.

So sorry for your loss op that must have been awful Flowers
