I just got a "happy birthday" text from my boss. My birthday is tomorrow :) I am on mat leave so no embarrassing cards will given or declarations in the office to cause embarrassment.
Debating whether or not I should text back saying "Thank you, but it is tomorrow" or just "thank you".

I ask because next year I will be back at work and if not corrected, we will have the embarrassment of a big happy birthday as I enter the office only for everyone to know it isn't! Everyone else knows so she won't be able to get away with a public statement without being publicly corrected!
And at no point did I say I was pissed off. I am actually pleased she bothered to text me considering I am on leave!

Definitely just a thank you. Its a lovely thought to send you a birthday message when you're off - I don't think any of my (lovely) managers would have done that!

I'd be more inclined to say something like - thanks that's lovely - I'm having a birthday week although the actual day is tomorrow - thanks for thinking of me.

I usually just say 'Thanks! You got in a day early haha!' And then make a flippant comment about cake.

No idea what's wrong with the first message. It's what I'd say but probably add an exclamation mark and a smiley face.

It'll be easier next year because they'll likely be conversation about it; so you can make it clear that your birthdays on the Thursday. This year I'd just thank her, it's nice that she remembered.

It probably came up on his phone. My phone always notifies me the day before someone's birthday. Just say thanks.

Why not answer primly 'I don't celebrate birthdays and I will thank you for keeping this quiet.'

Thank her nicely and some time in the next 360 days drop a joke-y comment, face-to-face, about her getting in a day early.

Depends on your relationship with your boss, I would most certainly say "thank you, but it's tomorrow LOl" and a load of smiley faces, I would get some jokey response afterwards and probably a text tomorrow too.

Then next year take your birthday off and tell your boss that is why. Or say a couple of days ahead 'its my birthday on blahday, so I thought I'd bring in a cake. Do you prefer carrot cake or chocolate?'

I'd probably say something like 'thank you, looking forward to seeing if oh spoilt me in the morning ☺️ '

I'd just say thank you to be honest.

You are on maternity leave. In the nicest possible way, I don't think your boss cares either way which day your birthday is. If you tell her this year, she is not going to remember next year (all she might do is reset her calendar alarm or reminder) but you will just stick in her mind as that person for correcting on what is a thoughtful gesture on her part to show you have not been forgotten whilst you are away from the office.

I think a little perspective is in order.

TBH lovely, I doubt he will remember next year that he got you early, bosses are terrible with that sort of thing - just try and drop it in next year, nearer the time, that your birthday is on ''this'' day. Or go with RebootYourEngine's idea - two day birthday's are always fun.
