To be surprised at how many calories are in vegetables?

I've recently started calorie counting and logging everything and it's honestly surprised me how many calories they have- around 40 for 100g carrots which isn't particularly loads, 70 for 80g peasShock, although I know peas are the most carby vegetable. Of course it's less than the equivalent pasta or chicken, however it's still quite considerable when your dinner can only be 400 calories. Anyone else discovered this?Smile

I logged food on my fitness pal for a while when I was eating mostly paleo, so meat, eggs, fat and vegetables, and I struggled to eat over 10,000 calories a day. Huge quantities of vegetables added up to a few hundred calories at most and made up the bulk of my meals. The first time I logged a slice of bread was when I got the biggest shock!

For some reason I convinced myself that 800 + 200 = 10,000.

I think I was possibly getting my steps and calories confused.

You just need to change your veggies. Greens and salad veg (not avocado!) are much lower. Go for non-legumes that grow above ground for low-cal high-bulk veggies to fill your plate.

It depends whether you eat too much or not really. I have been overweight and know many overweight people - not known anyone that's been really overweight due to too many root veg (unless white potatoes / chips).

It is crap when you think that you can have an apple or 2 biscuits, and an apple is one of the boring fruits too! I just think that the calories might be the same but I'm getting vitamins and the fat/salt/sugar(?) will be lower if I eat the apple

Really? not a problem. Still less than a teaspoon of butter or dollop of mayo, delicious as they are.

So long as you don't consume more calories than you burn, 300kcal per day from veg is not a problem. Maybe cut down on starchy veg and grains a little, if you're not meeting your goals. My mfp target is 1310 kcal per day and it's not difficult, particularly considering I usually earn another 2-300+ just from walking.
