I have a long-standing psychological disorder which has proven difficult to treat over the years. My mum has offered to pay for me a hypnotherapist. AIBU to think that hypnotherapy is a load of horseshit practised by a bunch of charlatans? I know she believes it will help, but I feel I'm being railroaded into it.

Thank you for replying, I am having terrible anxiety attacks just out of nowhere, they are terrifying, I'm just hoping i will have a positive response with them

I think it's worth trying as some people do definitely get some benefit from it. I think it's best to manage expectations - it isn't a wonder cure where you walk out and everything is different, it basically is meant to make you really relaxed and suggestible to changes in how you think.

I admit it hasn't really worked for me in the past, I do however LOVE self hypnosis as a relaxation method and tend to fall asleep. I feel great afterwards.

You don't "need to think it will work"!!! It's not a placebo. I didn't think it world work, but it did. The only caveat is that the effect (in my case, at least) wears off if I haven't confronted my fear for a while, so I go for top-ups.

If you're in SW London I can pass on the details of the amazing hypnotherapist who basically saved my career. (I've also seen an absolute charlatan in Harley Street and a hypnobirthing specialist who was OK but not amazing.)
