To remind you that you can't vote

Unless you respond to the letters sent out by the council about the electoral roll.

You used to be able to ignore them if there were no changes to who can vote. Now you have to respond every time they contact you. Even though you did it what seems like 5 minutes ago, you have to do it again. If you don't get in touch with them you'll drop off the register.

Whichever way you want to vote, make sure you've confirmed your details or you won't be able to vote.

Hmm im a bit more suspicious that they are spending more effort keeping it bang up to date so there is more money to be made selling the data on (as long as you agree to it!)

Very annoying!

I suspect it has less to do with selling the data and more to do with preventing electoral fraud. Wasn't there councillors done for fraud a few years ago somewhere in England, stuffing the ballot boxes with postal votes from imaginary people, then claiming these imaginary people must have just moved but forgot to remove themselves from the register?

It's to prevent electoral and financial fraud, along with id theft.

It's not just about votes but also about details on the electoral register and how they interact with credit rating agencies.
