To want some glasses that don't have arms with bows/flowers/leopard print or similar

I must be unreasonable because it seems next to impossible to avoid. I'd go for styles for men which don't seem to feel the need to add crappy decoration but stupid narrow face means they don't fit.

For something you're wearing everyday I'd thought that most people want something fairly neutral, or do people coordinate glasses and oufits these days?

i don't think i have ever seen glasses like you describe! They are all black, tortoiseshell or metal rimmed at my optician! Where are you looking?

Those are Cath Kidston glasses. Of course they're going to be covered in kitschy shite.

I don't believe there were no others in the whole of the opticians.

I get plain thin gunmetal or black frames from Glasses Direct, Specsavers, or ...well anywhere really.

I found the same thing at specsavers! I get my glasses there because I get a hefty discount for being on their contact lense plan but last time I needed new glasses I came out empty handed. I don't like metal frames and pretty much all the plastic ones are funny colours or have the garish arms you describe, or diamantes on the arms or whatever. They are mostly awful.

That was just one example of many! I've since found some frames online that look nice and plain, but in store anything that suited (I can't wear plastic frames and my lens limits my choice somewhat) had ridiculously decorated arms

Same as you crayfish, I get my contacts from there so I get a discount on glasses but couldn't even find anything vaguely ok.

Have you tried the range aimed at teens/boys (children's) they might have some suitable.

Glasses direct - cannot recommend them highly enough, and so cheap it negates the discount I get at vision express anyway.

I've got plain glasses recently from a local opticians. Previously I had plain ones from spec saver. Is it because of the shape of glasses you want, op? Those kind of horizontal rectangular ones tend to be more femininely styled I think. Try another shape

I'm typing this wearing a pair of black, plain metal trimmed glasses. For distance vision I have a tortoise shell pair of plastic framed glasses. Both from Specsavers.

It probably is partly down to the shape, but I'm choosing the shape that suits my face. Two years ago I had no problem finding frames that were fairly neutral but in my current branch today everything was nice and normal looking front on but ridiculous detailing on the arms.

They had some very fetching star wars ones in the boy's section

I also turn round in Specsavers, the 'womens' side is universally nasty with pink, sparkles, flowers, old-lady patterns, cheap looking silver or gold bits, clever-clever not-quite-rude words, muck-catching patterned arms, the name of some yank designer and all the rest.

Bloke side much better with none of this nonsense, and probably better made too as usual.

I prefer frameless glasses (from Glasses Direct). They're the most unobtrusive style I can find and I always have them.

I steer clear of twirly bits, patterns and colours. They look terrible on me.

I did have a quick look at the men's side but was just ready to give up at this point. I've worn glasses for 30 years and choosing frames has always been a trauma!

I've seen few pairs online on the Specsavers site which they didn't have in store, so will look to try some of them.

I was curious as to who is buying these styles, because I don't see people wearing them in real life. Although I guess that people who are just getting reading glasses can be a little bit more adventurous
