to be upset about being filmed by a teenager in the street?

I've just walked my 7yr old to school and a secondary school school pupil filmed both of us as she walked past with her friend. As they went past the girl holding the phone said "it's outstanding" in a sort of game show tone if you know what I mean. Obviously they were taking the piss out of me. After they passed I shouted, did you just film us but they were to busy watching it back to hear. My 7yr old was confused by what had happened and asked me if they had filmed him because he looks funny! I assured him they were just silly girls. I'm worried what will happen with the video now, I don't want my son and I possibly plastered on the net in these circumstances.

I called the school who said without a name they couldn't do anything so I'm considering calling the police. Am I over reacting?

I can't believe you are still giving this so much head space. You even called the police!

Youarenotprepared · 30/09/2016 20:10

They changed the rules on filming in public now because of CCTV. It's legal to film anyone and anything in a public place.

If you want to broadcast that material for
Commercial gain THAT is the point where certain regulations kick in but they are complicated and a pain in the arse.

Youarenotprepared · 30/09/2016 20:11

They are likely just being idiots. I wouldn't dwell on it.

MadAsABagOfCats · 30/09/2016 20:21

It is not illegal but I saw a woman inform the police recently (about some random guy taking photos of her child) and they followed up the weirdo individual. So much is going viral now, there really should be laws established to protect children and people's privacy.

You called the police? 😂

You called the police because two kids didn't verbally or physically assault you, didn't follow or threaten you and might not even have taken a video of you anyway. And now you're planning to go out of your way to take photos of them to get them into trouble at school over a video you're not even 100% certain they took?

Wowee.

check your youtube under your area to see if anything has been uploaded then report it if need be. Happens more than it should.

Others have already said it, but they were probably playing Pokemon Go. Hence the it's outstanding comment. Once you have caught a Pokemon you can read the assessment, and quite often it says, the specimen is outstanding. Catching a Pokemon, takes a while, you have to have your phone in the right position, throw a ball, wait, it might look as if someone's filming, but pretty sure they are just playing a game,

NatalieRushman · 01/10/2016 10:13

Op I think you're blowing this a little out of proportion.

Jinglebells99 · 01/10/2016 10:17

Here's a description of a Pokemon described as colossal and exceptional, they were probably just reading the description from their screen.

Some moron started filming me a few years ago after I had a go at him for letting his dog chase my sheep.

I snatched the phone (very impressed with managing to pull that one off) and chucked it in a massive puddle about a foot deep.

Funnily it no longer worked when he fished it out.

ProfYaffle · 02/10/2016 08:55

Dh was just looking through some Pokemon descriptions, some are 'Astounding'. Could easily be mis-heard as 'Outstanding'.

Whichever police officer or call handler you spoke to is wrong OP. I'm a journalist. We work outside all the time with our photographers taking pictures in public places. I can't tell you the number of times a copper has tried to take our cameras, delete our pictures, tell us we're not allowed to film etc. Without exception, every single time we've received an retrospective apology and the force has promised to update training.

RedBullBlood · 02/10/2016 10:00

So do some people think that every time they watch a street scene in a movie or on the news etc someone has had to procure the permission of every single person shown?

PikachuSayBoo · 02/10/2016 10:08

I think could well have been pokemon. The pokemon jump about sometimes which could explain the having to turn the phone round.

LadyConstanceDeCoverlet · 02/10/2016 10:11

I'm sorry, I struggle to believe that police said a one-off incident was "bordering on harassment" or that they were eager to speak to the two girls. If it happened, they were fobbing you off because they knew that, given your inability to identify the girls, they were never going to have to do anything about it.

GladAllOver · 02/10/2016 10:39

The only illegal thing here is if you snatch the phone and damage it.

It might be satisfying at the time, but could cost you a day in court.

sashh · 02/10/2016 10:48

If it's ok for them to film us am I ok to take a photo of them as I walk to school on Monday ?

Perfectly legal to do so.

Have your camera in hand and if they do then start (or at least let them think you have started) filming them.

Comejointhemurder · 02/10/2016 10:53

I'm another one querying the Police response. Harrasment laws are very clear and this incident does not apply in any way.
