Just did that 'putting on s king size duvet cover' hack that I saw recently in here - and am flabbergasted at how easy it is but also left wondering as to the myriad of other things that I should know but bloody don't. Suggestions please as to how to make the rest of my life as easy as putting on a duvet cover.

It gets rid of odours as well apparently.

Cellardoor23 how does the baking soda work is what do you do with it?

Using denture tablets in the loo overnight. Gets rid of all the stains from lime scale and rust. Ditto down the drain if you've got a funny smell/ slugs coming up! Coke works well on the loos as well.

I've stored all kinds of things in the oven. Not quite cashmere jumpers like sex in the city, but lots of ovenware.
I've also pulled the sticker outlines off, and left the little stickers.

Changing a nappy, use a clean one underneath the old one as a change mat. Just open it up and pop baby onto it.
Then use the wipes, put the wipes into the old one, which is still half on, roll it down all together, pull gently to remove it, rolling it up all the while, and close it using the tabs, leaving clean one to be tied up on the clean, creamed bottom. Saves faffing for a new nappy with one hand as baby's bottom gets cold on the (most likely soon to be piddled on ) change mat/ table / floor/ sofa/ knee. Never had an accident, or nasty smels. It's so quick.

Turn the light off in your fridge/ take the bulb out: no late night trips as you can't see a thing!

I use really cheap baby wipes on all stainless steel kitchen appliances/ hob hoods. Rub briskly with a microfibre cloth / kitchen roll to bring up an amazing streak free shine after.
You can reuse the baby wipes by washing them, as it's the structure that lifts the grease and dirt.
You can use a few wipes or the microfibre cloth in a bowl of water to wash Windows too, amazingly quick. Throw the water at the top of the window to rinse it down.... (outside Windows, obs!)

Chop or blitz herbs in the nutribullet as soon as you get a bunch, put the pureé in ice trays and add a bit of water and freeze. Fresh herbs for soups and sauces.
You can do the same with garlic. Make sure you double bag the garlic (with bread soda in the outer bag if you like) or it can make the freezer smell a bit garlicky.
And slices of lemon and lime too can be frozen too.
Also grapes, which are lovely for pimms, or salads.

Off to see about the duvet burrito YouTube video. Duvets are my old nemesis.

Er...it takes 3 mins to make a white sauce on the hob too if you use hot/warm milk and a whisk right from when the butter is added.

The burrito duvet tip is fantastic. I also love the dishwasher tablet trick to clean the oven-really works well.

Dixie - I mince my ginger with a bit of lemon and salt and it keeps for up to 6 months in the fridge. Green chillis and garlic too. I make a lot of Indian food and find I need to use a lot more frozen garlic/ginger/chilli as the flavour seems to fade. By keeping it fresh I end up using a lot less and saving money lol.

Will someone please explain the oven cleaning tips??

Brahumbug · 01/10/2016 03:52

If you have got grease or oil on your hands and don't have access to swarfega then sugar and washing up liquid do an excellent job.

Sugarlightly · 01/10/2016 05:39

Yes - but making sauce in a pan means possibly having to clean a slightly burnt pan, whereas microwave means just cleaning a small plastic bowl (which is much easier)

Caipira · 01/10/2016 05:56

That you can make delicious pineapple juice from the skins of pineapples. Who knew?
That a metal keyring loop through the zip of a pair of jeans, then looped over the button will stop loose zips from sliding down. Genius!
That wrist weights above the front wheels of an umbrella buggy will stop the buggy tipping backwards.
These are all things I discovered from others.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 01/10/2016 06:05

Old MN tip - when storing clean duvet sets put duvet and fitted sheet in the pillowcase so you get a clean set without hunting in the cupboard.

Cellardoor23 · 01/10/2016 11:19

I had annoying tea stains in some of my cups that I couldn't get rid of. I didn't want to resort to bleach (I hate th stuff) so I googled it and it said to use baking soda and it worked!

All I did was rinse the mugs with water and sprinkled baking soda in it, waited a few minutes and wiped clean. Couldn't believe it.

It works on clothes as well. If you rub it into your clothes and leave it for a bit, it should come out in the washing machine.

Apparently odour wise, if you sprinkle it onto fabrics you can't wash e.g., carpets, rugs and sofas then hoover, it gets rid of smells.

GASP!!! Shock

Are you a WIZZARD?!?!?!?!

ASISAYNOTASIDO · 01/10/2016 18:24

Oh keep these coming.,,my life is changing here people!! Just discovered using a straw to punch out strawberry stalks - brilliant. Chopping watermelon by halting then putting half on plate and chopping 'hatch' style - kids are the lot as they just pick up the cubes by the hard rind and munch - normally end up throwing out slices when I cut too much.

For duvets I just turn the cover inside out and grab the duvet corners through the (now inside out) cover corners, then shake it out... is the burrito duvet easier, it looked like a faff and you can't play ghosts halfway through but I guess you don't have to lift/shake the duvet?
