To ask to drive on my own?

I'm test driving my first car at the weekend and I'm really bloody nervous. I passed last year but I absolutely hate the thought of testing a car with someone watching me! I'd feel much more confident and less under pressure to take it round the block alone.

WIBU to ask if I can, if I left OH with them, or my house keys or something to prove I'm not going to drive into the sunset with it?!

It's a private seller and the car is under 5k.

Yeah leave dh with them. And drive off.........

Could be an insurance issue too

if it is a private sale, no chance. The seller would be mad to do this as they have no idea if you are going to drive off with it. Sorry.

BTW what is your insurance situation? Check your policy covers you to drive other cars with owner permission.

No way would I let somebody do this!:

1. How do they know the keys are for your house.
2. Your DH could run off straight away.
3. My insurance for theft wouldn't be valid if I just handed you the keys and allowed you to drive off into the sunset!

I'm a moron and just remembered that we could leave my OH's car and keys there.

Re. the insurance - I'm going to get temp cover. I do that often for occasionally driving OH's car

I wouldn't let anyone drive my car alone for a test drive, even if they left me there keys.

Are you really that nervous at driving? It's like driving any car really, hopefully your be looking at the road and not who is in the car

Once I'm actually driving I'm ok! It's just the thought of someone I don't know "judging" me that makes me feel anxious - I suffered really bad test nerves. On my own or with family I'm fine.

Even if you left the car you turned up in with keys I still wouldn't let you drive off in it without me accompanying you

Have had a motorbike stolen in this way before, can I have a test ride, here's my bike and keys, never saw them again as the one they left was stolen already. Luckily I got the bike back a few days later as they were going up in size to a better one each time and leaving the previously stolen one as security

The only way anyone gets a test drive or ride now is after I have counted and checked the full asking price in cash while you are gone in it and seen proof of insurance

There's not a chance I'd let you do this, and you telling me that you're a nervous driver would make me even less inclined to let you anywhere near my car.

Robby there's no way I'd hand over X amount of K just for a test drive. Surely it could go the other way and the owner could bugger off with my cash if the car's not what I want after driving it?!

Did this a few years ago there was 4 of us Inc two kids we left our car with keys and wallet with photo ID and they were fine with us taking it out for half an hour, if your really nervous get someone who's not nervous, either owner or Dh to drive it somewhere nicer to start off depending where they live, quiet estate or car park the last think you want is to start on a busy road, and remember loads of people stall in a new car even if their good drivers as the clutchs are all different so don't be embarrassed you get back into driving so quick!

Thanks Leopard. I think I'm not going to say anything about going alone - I guess it'll be good for me and I'm sure I'll be fine once I'm actually doing it!
