To think the Americans have a cheek

After watching the debate last night am I wrong in thinking the Americans have a cheek laughing at us for the Boris appointment when they are about to appoint president trump

I couldn't believe the things that came out not renting to balck people 🙁🙁🙁🙁 I think Boris looks positively satesmen like compared to a guy with a ducking cat on his head

And there are still people saying he nailed it 😳

I think the term "the Americans" is generalising just a little bit.

This. I know a fair few Americans that are horrified at the thought of Trump as president.

SandyPantz · 27/09/2016 14:45

Clinton is herself the reason for Trump's popularity IMO, he's not responsible for her crimes so I can see how for some he is the only option.

DiJiBiDi · 27/09/2016 14:46

I feel sorry for Americans it's come to a point choosing the lesser evil which in my opinion is hillary...

I don't think a man who admitted he would date his own daughter if she wasn't his or the fact that he thinks all other races are inferior to his own...it's actually pretty scary seeing all the supporters he has (he calls them "his fans") to see people follow such a racist ideology so blindly baffles me.

SandyPantz · 27/09/2016 14:48

to see people follow such a racist ideology so blindly baffles me.

Yes, but Clinton being presented as the liberal, fair, humane choice also baffles the hell outta me!

DiJiBiDi · 27/09/2016 14:48

I just pray for America and it's people who don't know what to do with themselves and this mess.

GingerbreadLatteToGo · 27/09/2016 14:52

Rock v Hard Place

My sane American friends tell me that they're all counting on the Senators & representatives to keep the next disasterous President from causing too much chaos. Frankly, I think that a very, very tall order.

I think Obama needs to take control, tell America he's refusing to give either of them the keys to the Whitehouse & bloody well think again 😁 Using a minimum of one brain cell each.

Yes we had Boris as a contender, but he didn't actually get that far. That goes in our favour, hugely.

SandyPantz · 27/09/2016 14:57

It's like the only choice they have is to chose what way in which they want to be on the wrong side of history

Do you condone Hilary by voting for her, even tactically
Or vote for a bigot
Or don't vote tactically for Hilary because you cannot condone what she's done, thereby not helping to prevent the bigot from winning

There's no good choice

OllyBJolly · 27/09/2016 14:59

they are also (in the vast majority of cases) some of the most welcoming, friendly and genuine people I have ever had the pleasure of working with

My experience too! Just done a two week road trip and the kindness and friendliness was the best I've seen anywhere. I don't think it's wise to say Americans are all laughing at us, just as we can't call Americans stupid for voting for Trump. Don't let the media dictate how you view a nation.

And yes, if Elizabeth Warren had a more enlightened stance on Palestine, I'd like to see her as president.

SandyPantz · 27/09/2016 15:04

IMO it's the equivalent of chosing between Forage or Blair

No matter how much of a labour/left supporter you are, and how much you dislike Forage, could you really vote for Blair after everything that's happened?

LurkingHusband · 27/09/2016 15:32

I thought Boris renounced his US citizenship?

As with All Things Boris, you need to watch the slippery fucker.

He said he would renounce his citizenship if Uncle Sam started coming after him for taxes (bear in mind, Boris earns an eye-watering amount as an author).

However - spoiler alert - sometimes people say they will do something, and subsequently when everyone has forgotten they don't.

Alyosha · 27/09/2016 15:36

Well considering Trump thinks it's OK to use nuclear weapons, even if Hilary is 100% guilty of everything the mad US right wing thinks she is, she is still the better option.

At least there will still be a world to live in with her as president!

LurkingHusband · 27/09/2016 15:41

All of this said, what can a president do ? Actually do ?

Surely Obamas second term will be defined as much by all he didn't (or wasn't able) to do as by what he achieved ?

NotCitrus · 27/09/2016 17:35

My folks went to a Democrats UK fundraiser over the summer and the best seller was a button saying "Hold your nose and vote Hillary" - sums it up really.

The Americans laughing at Boris are the same ones terrified of Trump winning. Trump is basically repeating UKIP's strategy - it's all "the elite"'s fault you don;t have a job or health insurance or can't afford heating, cos the elite are favouring cheap immigrants over Americans so we need to get rid of the immigrants and then you'll get a better job and America will be great again.

One of my cousins is a fanatical Trump supporter so I get all the pep talks on Facebook. Thankfully this has motivated the other couple dozen cousins to ensure they are registered to vote Hillary. I've sent my ballot request in...

Xmaslover · 27/09/2016 21:51

Can someone please sum up what Hilary has been accused of?

Rainbunny · 28/09/2016 20:02

I'm married to an American and my DH is the most politically apathetic person I've ever met (we are an example of opposites attraction!) but even he has registered to vote this year because he is so terrified that Trump could win.

nicebitofsodaandjam · 28/09/2016 20:06

Love that,Seneca

ForeverEyesOfBlue · 28/09/2016 20:08

While I think Michelle Obama is excellent and Hillary would be a far better President than Trump, it would be quite good if the first woman in the White House wasn't following in her husband's footsteps... But baby steps I guess!

TheDowagerCuntess · 28/09/2016 20:22

Every American I know bar one, is terrified of Trump.

But then, everyone I knew supported Remain, and look what happened there.

People often don't admit to supporting the nuttier democratic option until they're unleashed into the privacy of the polling booth. Sad

Threebedsemii · 28/09/2016 20:39

The US has a very strange tradition of taking presidents from such a tiny pool they're related. I find it bonkers- even in the UK, with just 60m people you don't get son following father as PM or wife following husband

I like Hilary and think she's a good politican. I think Seneca's article is bang on the money.

mimishimmi · 29/09/2016 03:19

They are both scary and both beholden to the same interests.

geekymommy · 29/09/2016 04:32

I'm American. I will not be voting for Trump. He scares me, too. Any of you willing to help me immigrate if he does win?

geekymommy · 29/09/2016 04:42

I'm not laughing at you about Brexit, either- that scares me, too.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 29/09/2016 04:46

Lots of Canadians watching the debate with interest. We've currently got a son following his father as leader.

TheForeignOffice · 29/09/2016 06:04

I thought Boris renounced his US citizenship?

Goodness me, no! Boris places a very high value of on freedom of movement to work and live abroad, both for himself and by extension for his children. After blustering because he'd been caught out by the US tax authorities, settling the bill and vowing to renounce, he apparently decided that maintaining these existing freedom of movement rights is really valuable (even in measurable $$$ terms of future potential tax liabilities) and certainly not to be thrown away lightly...Grin

...Unless of course you are a bog standard UK pleb, in which case he'll be happy to chuck you and your kid's existing rights in the trash Hmm
