£100 to sit together?

sunchild77 · 26/09/2016 18:04

Kids first family holiday abroad... BA want £100 to sit us all together.. Kids first flight they are 4, 9 and 11yrs plus us mum and dad.
Would the airline really sit us all separately? Is paying out really a big waste of money?
Plus Im terrified of flying as it is... I need DH nearby!!
Thoughts please? thanks x

I'm too tight to pay. We have 4 flights so I'll save the £300 and wing it. £8k holiday needn't be 8300
I bet going on holiday with you is barrel of laughs.

expatinscotland · 27/09/2016 12:17

Which airline was this, Baby, because they should never have let your child travel at all.

PersianCatLady · 27/09/2016 12:18

letting them know how little their parent loves them as they are too tight to pay for a seat next to them
and letting the kid know not to ask for any treats on holiday because if their parents cannot be bothered to pay to sit next to them they are probably going to be tight all round.

PersianCatLady · 27/09/2016 12:20

catching a stmach bug from the hotel and vomiting the whole journey
Did you inform the airline that your child was sick?

I hate people that allow sick kids to travel, it is not fair on the kid and it is not fair on the other passengers.

Is there a market for a fee which will guarantee that you will not be near your teenagers?

wasonthelist · 27/09/2016 12:21

when holidays are so expensive already.

Holidays involving flights aren't compulsory - anyone would think a massively expensive foreign holiday is a basic requirement like food the way some people act.

YelloDraw · 27/09/2016 12:26

The smokers kept on smoking all the way from Sydney to Singapore, saying it was their 'right' to do so.

I imagine most smokers at that time, expecting to be able to smoke in the smoking area, woudl have found it pretty fucking difficult not to smoke - what with being addicted to nicotine.

Babyroobs · 27/09/2016 12:26

Persian cat lady - Feel free to hate me then. The airline staff could see he was vomiting whilst queuing to board the plane .I didn't feel the need to point it out specifically to them. No one said he couldn't board. What were we expected to do? I imagine it happens quite a lot . Has anyone else extended their stay in a foreign country because their child has a tummy bug?

PersianCatLady · 27/09/2016 12:31

The airline staff should have asked you what was wrong with the child, it could have been nerves?

If you have an infection then the correct thing to do would have been to visit a doctor and yes if they deemed it necessary you and your child would have had to have stayed until it had passed.

Don't you feel guilty about letting your child travel in that condition and also the possibility of your child infecting other people?

expatinscotland · 27/09/2016 12:38

Yeah, that's why I'd like to know who this airline is, because I'd not want to patronise them.

Babyroobs · 27/09/2016 12:39

Oh ffs Persian, do you have a nasty answer lined up for every poster on this thread? My first thought was to get my poorly son home on a 2 hour flight rather than drag him round looking for a hotel to stay in at short notice. I'm sorry that my immediate thought wasn't for others and feel incredibly guilty now when I think about it. I apologise profusely to anyone affected on that flight in June 2010 ( world cup week) from majorca to East midland airport. Happy now.

Babyroobs · 27/09/2016 12:41

Expat . I remember we booked that holiday with Thomas Cook. I'm not sure if they have their own airline? I would never book with them myself they are not a great company.

LagunaBubbles · 27/09/2016 12:43

We flew to America with BA last year with a 8 and 13 year old. We didnt pay for seats as it was a lot of money for both legs, was prepared to risk it as travel agent said it wouldnt be a problem at online check in. I would never have expected someone else who had paid though to move for us.

BA will allocate families with children under 12 seats 3 days before flight and this is 2 days ahead of general online check in. Which they did. Roughly half the planes seats werent available (I assumed through people paying to reserve seats) but there were still loads available, including rows of four in the middle of the plane, which is why BAs allocation of 2 seats in one row and another 2 behind was a bit odd! When on-line check in opened 24 hours before the flight I could go in and change them, which I did.

Coming back form San Diego wasnt so easy due to dodgy wi-fi, so in hindsight I would pay for return journeys now.

Get over yourself love but like expatinscotland said please let us know what airline it was so we can avoid them.

GoMeGoYou · 27/09/2016 13:59

Not read all the thread but perhaps airlines should offer a discount to passengers who don't mind where they sit. The end result would be exactly the same but it sounds better.

SuperFlyHigh · 27/09/2016 14:08

babyroobs

I think you should have told the airline - incredibly selfish of you if your DS was infectious to let him fly and risk infecting other passengers.

entitled parenting at it's best there.

PersianCatLady · 27/09/2016 14:43

babyroobs won't like you saying that.

SuperFlyHigh · 27/09/2016 14:52

Persian do you really think I give a flying fuck?!

Grin

it is bloody selfish and entitled.

Shock D&V can be fatal to some people with long term conditions
Cannot believe anyone would be so selfish as to take a contagous child on a flight, absolutely shocked, even the most entitled idiotic parents I know in RL wouldn't do that!

I was separated from my parents aged 5 on a trip home from the USA- they were in business class and I was in economy so nowhere near!! I do remember being a bit sad I couldn't sit next to my Mum , but that was that. I was really shy so I didn't speak to the woman next to me the whole flight, which she was probably glad of!

I know but when I made a point of it upthread she accused me of being nasty and I was beginning to think that perhaps I was wrong but now you have reassured me that I was right.
