To think Mr Collins from the Sweet Valley High books was a tad creepy?

I found some SVH books in a free bookshop recently. I devoured them as s tween so thought I'd see how they stack up these days.

Apart from the twins being ridiculous (Jessica is a psychopath and Elizabeth sanctimonious) and the author's hatred of fat people, Mr Collins the English teacher was way too creepy. Why was he always hanging out with 16 year olds? Even at weekends he'd host picnics for them, he'd give up his free time to take them camping. Surely there was something dodgy going on??

I just cancelled my Kindle Unlimited membership 2 days ago. I'm going to have to restarta it now to re read some of these gems

laylabelle · 26/09/2016 22:36

Alice and her Spanish style everything!
Never realised how daft these books were till reading recaps..

HamNJam · 26/09/2016 22:51

RJnomore1 oh wow, I'm definitely off to search out those gems (ebay?) Still have loads of SVH Blush, stupidly wondered if my kids would every read them, but no... Wouldn't do their self esteem any good!

Nokidslovesitethough · 26/09/2016 22:55

AIBU to start kindle unlimited just for SVH? Plus to see how the HELL Jessica marries Todd?

HelenaDove · 26/09/2016 23:09

I feel it my duty to warn everyone on this thread that Sweet Valley Confidential is very poorly written.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 26/09/2016 23:11

Kindle unlimited?!? Sweet Valley is on it?! How much?!

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 26/09/2016 23:14

Also very excited about kindle unlimited?!

HarryPottersMagicWand · 26/09/2016 23:20

Yes Sweet Valley Confidential was dire! I had to read it because I needed to know what happened brut my god it was bad! I got rid of it and I usually reread books a lot.

Nokidslovesitethough · 26/09/2016 23:21

All of SVH was poorly written Paul Anka. I am feeling the need to lose myself in Spanish tiled kitchens in split level houses!

PaulAnkaTheDog · 26/09/2016 23:22

Just discovered kindle unlimited. IN LOVE!

MrsJoeyMaynard · 26/09/2016 23:33

Was there a SVH book where Jessica spiked Elizabeth's drink with seed alcohol (whatever that's meant to be), and then Elizabeth went unwittingly drink driving and caused a fatal crash?

I sort of half remember that but can't remember how it finished.

The timescales in those books bugged me though. All that staying the same age for several years worth of events.

Babysitters Club did that too. I think one of the last ones I read had Claudia moved back a year to 7th grade after her and most of them had been 8th graders for about 100 books.

Nokidslovesitethough · 26/09/2016 23:43

I'm on a beach holiday next week! I've got like 30 SVH to read already! DH can fuck right off

PaulAnkaTheDog · 26/09/2016 23:45

Indeed there was MrsJoey, check back in the thread, I mentioned it Smile

AbernathysFringe · 26/09/2016 23:57

Just started singing the TV theme to SVH. Didn't realise I knew all the words...

MetallicBeige · 27/09/2016 00:04

Oh Jessica, with your room the colour of a Hershey Bar...

Erm, lovely!

Mummyme1987 · 27/09/2016 00:08

I had forgotten about the sweet valley twin books. Still got a few on my shelves. Not letting my dds read them though. Not that they want too. More Harry Potter than sweet valley.

MidnightAura · 27/09/2016 00:21

I loved Sweet Valley Twins. I also read the unicorn club!

EverySongbirdSays · 27/09/2016 01:11

I remember that weird family telling Mallory she was a Catholic too. I had a lot of those books. Jessie DID have a personality, she was really into ballet AND ended up being great at synchronised swimming. I remember lots of weird details like them giving Mallory an exam before she was allowed in.

I hid sweets in my room to be like Claudia.

Kristy was an arsehole to her stepdad IIRC - my favourite book is where they all inexplicably go to Disneyworld and a cruise. I also liked the equally inexplicable ski chalet one

My favourite SVH was where they end up in a parellel universe off a theme park ride, please tell me people remember that? Elizabeth is a princess?

MrsJoeyMaynard · 27/09/2016 04:19

I didn't really think about this when I was a kid reading them, but the whole Babysitter Club thing is odd.

There's not one of them older than 13. How come so many parents are absolutely fine with that? Especially parents who don't already know the Babysitters? There's even a book where Dawn loses a child she's babysitting (turns out to be a mix up over which day the divorced dad has custody and all's fine in the end) and there's no consequences for the Babysitters Club or loss of business.

SamanthaBrique · 27/09/2016 06:28

I could never get into the SVH tv series as it didn't seem to be based on any of the books. It was the most 90s show ever!

everysongbird I remember the one where the twins got dolls and went to a weird new land and met two princes (who were just like them it I remember correctly Hmm )

If there is one I haven't read I want it! I re-read some of them and they truly are terrible, but I love them anyway!

Binkybix · 27/09/2016 07:02

It rings the vaguest of bells. It also sounds identical to dungeons and dragons!

This one? Don't think ever read this one...not to sure I'm sad I didn't lol

lostlalaloopsy · 27/09/2016 07:30

I loved the SVH books! I remember the evil twin collection - there were about 8 books wasn't there? I was slightly obsessed with this set and would ask my mother take me to the local city to see if the next had been released every wkd. She was not as keen as me so it was usually a no!! I gave up on them after that - I couldn't see how they could beat an evil doppleganger murderess! Margo was so bad - remember she killed an old lady at the bus station so she could steal her sandwich and newspaper! I am worried that I remember this!

I read the Babysitters Club too, did Claudia not only have her own phone but phone number too? That really stuck in my mind!

YoungBritishPissArtist · 27/09/2016 07:42

I distinctly remember one of the first things I ever searched on the Internet was gold lavalier necklace Blush
