To think work are being a bit unreasonable to DD??

DD is only 16 and works in a small Morrisons local.

She recently fracture one of her foot bones and has been put in a cast. She informed work, where they told her she was allowed 7 days off. She took the 7 days and then they said they will find stuff for her to do.

She went in for her shift and they said they would put her on the till. She found that really hard as she was constantly standing on one foot for 6 hours... She had to call over someone if someone asked her to go and find something, to which she got a massive moan at from her boss about how she needs to go and look for it, as she's still able to get around (but on crutches)...

She is getting really bad aches in the top of her other leg as she was standing on it for so long...

I don't really know her rights with this, I have never worked in a supermarket.

Can anyone help?

I was thinking about the selling of tabacco and booze she isnt allowed to sell it underage

Sparklesilverglitter · 24/09/2016 23:02

Surely they could of found her a chair to sit on behind till, I know it's a local rather than a big supermarket but bloody hell they must have chairs in staff room/office. Health and safety she can't sit on a chair My arse!

She could go and see the GP and ask for a fit note, did the hospital not offer her one?

Hape · 24/09/2016 23:03

She gets approval, for the alcohol. She is apparently allowed to sell the cigarettes though?

PlaidMaid · 24/09/2016 23:03

Morrisons don't have locals any more do they? Thought they sold them then they all shut down as new firm went into administration.

Anyway YANBU, they should provide a chair.

WorraLiberty · 24/09/2016 23:05

She's not allowed to sell tobacco or alcohol under the age of 18.

What does 'getting approval' mean?

mum11970 · 24/09/2016 23:05

I thought you had to be over 18 to work the till at a supermarket. What does she do when people buy age restricted items? Seems a daft job to give her if she can't physically or legally do parts of it.

Hape · 24/09/2016 23:07

They come over and say okay. She's does the cigarettes though.

Phone about to die, will write about the Morrisons in a sec (with RE to them selling)

MrsJayy · 24/09/2016 23:07

Nah its 18 now for cigarettes now because smoking age has been increased . I saw a morrisons local on holiday this year so they are still around

mum11970 · 24/09/2016 23:09

She can't sell tobacco, alcohol, knives, matches, medicines, over 18 DVDs, games and magazines. The list could probably go on.

mum11970 · 24/09/2016 23:11

She is not legally allowed to take the money for age restricted items, whether someone OKs it or not.

WorraLiberty · 24/09/2016 23:13

I don't know now. I've Googled and it seems to be conflicting.

One website claims a 16 year old can sell tobacco as long as they're being supervised by an employee over the age of 18.

Other sites say they can't.

TyneTeas · 24/09/2016 23:13

This explains about fit notes and temporary adjustments to enable a return to work

MrsJayy · 24/09/2016 23:28

An over 18 can say ok to her selling over 18 items and she can ring it up . How assertive is your Dd i know she has only been there a short while but would she tell a supervisor her leg hurts she cant be hopping about for a shift

neveradullmoment99 · 24/09/2016 23:30

Get her to the doctors and get a sick line to cover her absense. That is outraggeous.

neveradullmoment99 · 24/09/2016 23:30

absence.

MrsJayy · 24/09/2016 23:32

Dd1 was a team leader in a supermarket she used to ok alcohol for under 18s mum worked in a spar for years she did the same mum was the liscensee (sp) for her shift

brokenbone · 24/09/2016 23:32

I broke my ankle in February and was signed off work for 4 weeks initially. My job is one where I'm on my feet all day and when my sick note ran out I had to contact occupational health who refused to let me back to work on health and safety grounds as they were unable to accommodate my additional needs with having a cast and crutches and that I was actually a health and safety risk in the event of a fire as I couldn't evacuate quick enough. I ended up being signed off for 10 weeks in total until I no longer needed crutches and then had a phased return to work where any additional help was offered and supported. 7 months later I'm still under review as being on my feet all day causes my ankle to swell and hurt so I'm still supported with additional needs, they even brought in a tall chair for me to sit on whenever I need to rest. The occupational review will remain in place for a year and longer if necessary. The whole time I was signed off I received full pay and HR was in contact weekly for updates and to see how I was. Still get calls now to check my progress and see if I still need the support.

Of course not. Confused Supermarkets are full of 14-17-year-olds, doing after-school jobs.

EttaJ · 25/09/2016 02:49

Morrisons are a terrible company to work for. I know of three people that worked for them, different stores and left due to illegal working practices. No one blabbed though, which is a shame.

NicolaJConstantinou · 26/09/2016 11:38

Hello, maybe I can help, I work for Morrisons. Could you let me know which store. If its a MyLOCAL it's not Morrisons but let me know, lets see how I can help. Nic. PS - sounds painful
