Dishwasher argument

Please settle an argument in my household.

We have just cooked 12 sausages in a grill pan.

Person A contends that the grill pan can go straight in the dishwasher and it will come clean.

Person B contends that it needs to be washed by hand because if it goes in the dishwasher the fat will clog it up and just be spread all over the other crockery.

Who is right, please?

You shouldn't wash large volumes of fat down the drain. Neither via the sink or the dishwasher.

I line my grill pan with foil each time I use it. The fat solidifies quickly afterwards and is wrapped up to go in the bin. Hardly any of it then remains in the pan. Just the odd little smear.

It can then be washed either by hand or dishwasher, whichever you prefer. Personally, I don't like to put non-stick stuff in the dishwasher as experience has taught me that it comes out rather less non-stick than when it went in.

While we're on the subject could someone kindly tell me how you're supposed to put cups, glasses and mugs in one of those things? I don't use one at home but like to stick stuff in the one at work. Trying to arrange the cups is a bit like the krypton factor and they always end up looking the same as they went in just full of water.

I scrape any fat onto a slice of bread in the kitchen caddy with a spatula...gets most fat out. Then into the dishwasher

Gamer, how on earth do they end up full of water? Unless you are putting them in the right way up when they should be upside down.

I never wash up anything by hand. I waited too many years for a dishwasher to do that! But I do wipe off excessive fat or grease from pans before putting it in the dishwasher.

Hmm... 11 sausages = straight in the dishwasher, 12 sausages = pre-wash then dishwasher

Well I pull the top tray out and kind of lie them down on an angle. I take it they're supposed to just sit upside down then? Just some of them are big long things and the tray doesn't shut if I put them upside down.

We scrape old fat out on to newspaper, wrap and put that in the food waste caddy (collected by council). Would never use foil as it is not biodegradable.

We wash nearly all pans and baking trays by hand (along with wine glasses and all sorts of other stuff that doesn't do well in the dishwasher).

Dishwasher goes on about 5x per week.

Haha-yes they have to be upside down. If too tall for top layer put them on the bottom, still upside down mind!Grin

Don't lie them at angles. They should be properly upside down or they won't wash or drain properly.

Very tall glasses or ones with long stalks are better done by hand as most of them don't sit well in a dishwasher. Never known that with tea and coffee mugs though.

Some dishwashers have a top basket which can be height adjusted. It can be removed and put in at a lower level to accommodate taller drinking vessels. I think mine can, but I don't bother because then it affects what can be put in the lower basket.

oooh many thanks, i'll have a tinker next week and see if the basket comes out.

It's more those coffee cups that you put the lid on that leave me perplexed. I'm not washing them by hand, it's a 3 floor building of laziness and I fancied learning how to use that machine.

I'll put them in upside down Grin

You have me confused now about coffee cups with a lid!

Do you mean the reusable ones you can buy in Costa or Starbucks? They are pretty tall I guess but I would have hoped they would go in if you take the lid off and put it in separately. Disclaimer though. - I don't know for sure whether they are dishwasher safe scuttles off to examine DD3's Costa cup .

At any rate, cups and glasses must be upside down and standing as erect as possible.

Yes i'm sorted with the upside down thing. I'm going to have a play on monday.

Sorry OP for derailing your thread.

Experiment. Provided that they are of material suitable to go in dishwashers.

Stand other stuff around them to wedge them straight and reduce the possibility of them toppling sideways.

Weel i'm of the mind if they're bothered they should wash out their cups Wink

I will, I like having a machine to play with when things are quiet.

As various other posters have said, leave to cool, scrape fat into kitchen waste bin, put grill pan in the dishwasher. Job done ☺
