To go to the GP for this?

I've been a long time lurker but this is my first post so be gentle!
I'm 38 years old, separated and have decided at this stage in my life I really want a baby!
My husband never wanted children but my new partner does and we're very keen to start trying while we've still got a bit of time on our side.
At my partner's suggestion I've made an appointment at the GP for next week to discuss what we need to do to prepare...folic acid etc
But....is this the done thing or will the GP look at us like we're mad? Should I just be googling such things? I'm a well educated professional but literally clueless when it comes to ttc! But obviously don't want to waste a GP appointment if it's unnecessary.

I had a baby later in life. I had been pregnant before and had miscarriages and ectopic pregnancy.
I was referred to a gynaecologist and has a D &C where it was discovered my remaining tube was blocked.
IVF worked second time and I have an amazing DD.
Time is not on your side so I think it reasonable to see your GP.
Best of luck and remember to pray to whom or whatever you believe in.

anotherprickinthewall the GP will do nothing until the OP has been trying to conceive for 6m.

When I went to see the GP because I was actually pregnant I got told off for wasting an appointment! Apparently I should just have phoned and asked to be booked in with a midwife.

The GP often won'the know about the higher doses of folic acid. I had to tell mine!

There really isn't any need for a GP appointment OP unless you find out that you do need a higher dose of folic acid and then a phone call to ask for a prescription would be fine.

Lol! I'm not that poster! That's why I double checked on here.
Lots of good advice, and lots of sensible comments both for and against so thank you.
What I'll do is phone the surgery and double check with them tomorrow - if they say there's no need for an app then I'll be happy with that but if they say one would be useful due to my personal circumstances and medical history then I'll pop along to the appointment on Thursday.
Either way I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for some successful ttc when we start 😊

No need to see GP. Take folic acid now, have sex around your time of ovulation which is usually around 14 days before your period.

Just thought I'd give a quick update...I phoned the surgery and spoke to a nurse who advised we keep the appointment so we went along as planned.
The GP was actually great, talked us through loads of info/advice, chatted to us about my past medical history. Sent me to the nurse that afternoon for blood tests and blood pressure checks, and gave me a prescription for a higher dose of Folic Acid due to my age/weight. He said he wished everyone took the planning so seriously! Lol! So all good - although he did stress we had no time to waste and advised we get started as soon as possible!
