To feel sad that our children don't have Saturday morning programmes

Going Live was my fave. Trevor and Simon were my heroes. Swing ya pants. Pork Winchester. Ninja day off etc. Ahh. I used to wake up for these programmes. So sad there is no Saturday crazy progs anymore. I even used to watch smtv in my 20's.

Some posters are completely missing the point - yes kids can watch tv after school and on Saturdays but like practically everything in life these days it's constantly available to them, it's not a 'treat' anymore.

Not only are most of the bastard channels on 24 hours a day but there are at least 15 of them to choose from.

DoinItFine · 24/09/2016 08:05

It'll make nostalgia so much harder in the future.

Grin

That is beautiful. Kind of Proustian.

DoinItFine · 24/09/2016 08:08

How is watching TV every single day after school and every Saturday morning "a treat".

I would call that either "a way of life" or "a wasted childhood".

RootTeeToot · 24/09/2016 08:16

You are so right Mrs Mook. My dc are amazed if someone has watched the same program as them.

I loved Wonky Donkey with Ant and Dec. It's got to rhyme man! And before Pokemon came on they dressed up and had a Pokemon battle.

TapDancingPimp · 24/09/2016 08:24

Hmm, well I spent many an afternoon in front of Fun House, Knightmare, Rainbow, Button Moon...I also spent many playing the most ridiculous games with my brother, making 'inventions' in my kitchen or running about the streets with my friends like mad thing until summoned at tea time.

Hardly a 'wasted childhood' ffs Hmm

DoinItFine · 24/09/2016 08:31

running about the streets with my friends like mad thing until summoned at tea time.

This is what is disappearing for children.

The fact that there are more TV channels seems such a weird thing to get maudlin about.

maddiemookins16mum · 24/09/2016 08:32

Tiswas was banned in our house, far too common and "stupid" according to my mother. Sat morning tv was a real treat in the 70's and I also loved those Eastern European series they had on during the summer hols. I also loved Playaway on a Saturday afternoon (even though I was probably too old for it. But there is practically constant kids tv these days so you are being slightly U (but I see what you mean in a way).
I also adored those BBC adaptations in the 70's of books like A Little Princess and my all time favourite was Thursdays Child.

How is watching TV every single day after school and every Saturday morning "a treat".

Because at the time I was growing up, that is all there was for us kids. Only four channels, two of which would turn onto sport for most of Saturday and you had no chance of seeing a black and white film on BBC Two if there was some sport on BBC1 your Dad wanted to see. There was no internet, no satellite TV etc. It was one of your only chances you had to see pop stars, the latest music video's, competitions etc.

LITTLEGEEK · 24/09/2016 09:03

I remember Saturday morning telly. Loved it currently watching scrambled with DS. It's probably the closest I can think of to my childhood telly. I'm with Olivia we only had 4 channels. Even now we only have basic sky package so don't have access to everything. I miss captain caveman and wacky races Smile

ShouldHaveBeenJess · 24/09/2016 09:12

I'm not so sure...

I remember when my younger sister was in primary school (I was in secondary) and she wrote a letter to Nobby the Sheep from Ghost Train (ITV) telling him she thought he was great.

It was read out on the show.

For the next three years, I was nicknamed Nobby.... So unfair!

blueturtle6 · 24/09/2016 09:26

I didn't believe there was no Saturday morning kids programme and got up just to check.
Next generation is sadly deprived.

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 24/09/2016 10:23

Watching Saturday Morning TV is a wasted childhood? See that horse you're on? Climb down from it a bit.
The very fact we are specifiying waiting for one show to come on suggests to me the majority of us weren't sitting in front of repeat after repeat of crap all day long.
I was playing games with my siblings, at dance lessons, playing in streams, crating but I had a set aside programme I enjoyed once a week. Hardly a wasted childhood, Jesus.

AnArrowToTheKnee · 24/09/2016 10:26

I think the change in kids tv might have something to do with kids not playing outside as much. There are so many options for indoor entertainment these days, but I remember getting up for SMTV then buggering off out when it was finished because the shows mum watched were boring! Now there's multiple screens, on demand, whole channels dedicated to kids
shows.

DoinItFine · 24/09/2016 10:32

Watching Saturday Morning TV is a wasted childhood?

Um, nope.

I very clearly said "watching TV every day after school and every Saturday morning".

It's so much easier to talk about things if you pay attention to what people are saying.

Also paying attention to tone helps.

5tardusty · 24/09/2016 10:45

Is there any equivalent now for kids where the big (or not so big) popstars are interviewed and perform and maybe act a bit silly in a sketch or competition? That, for me was one of the most valuable parts of the shows; getting to know the current popular culture and forming my own opinions.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 24/09/2016 10:50

'I'd like to ask Five star, why are they so fucking crap?'

madein1995 · 24/09/2016 11:00

I was born in 95 and I remember just having the four channels until we got sky, and kids telly was 4-6 when I was small! Was great. We have freeview now so a lot more than we used to, but not a lot compared to modern standards

MrsJayy · 24/09/2016 11:01

My Dds are older so they had Sat kids tv i loved Smtv live and always watched with them quality time and all that Grin

MrsJayy · 24/09/2016 11:03

Urgh @ mumsnetter born in 95 Grin

80sMum · 24/09/2016 11:03

The excitement of waiting for your favourite programme to start has gone. Now that children can watch anything they want at any time, the specialness of TV has been eliminated. There is no longer anything to look forward to. It is rather a shame imo.

I can remember skipping home from school in happy anticipation of watching the next instalment of the book that was being read that week on Jackanory, for example.

80sMum · 24/09/2016 11:05

What? Born in 1995??! Wasn't that only last week?!

That makes you 12 years younger than my youngest child, MrsJayy!

MrsJayy · 24/09/2016 11:11

Not me im ancient 80s

PepsiPenguin · 24/09/2016 11:13

Was just coming to sing

"Don't you open that trappp door

Your a fool if you daareeee"

Now I'm secretly hoping someone will open it and all the hatters will fall down it Grin

To feel sad that our children don't have Saturday morning programmes
FlyingElbows · 24/09/2016 11:14

Oh I am so glad I've found other people who weren't allowed to watch itv (or stv here) because it was "common"! Clearly my mother was not the only loon Grin

PepsiPenguin · 24/09/2016 11:14

HATERS not HaTTers

I have nothing against people who make Hats Grin
