Good :) I hope the situation had got better now, has he gone??

iklboo · 25/09/2016 12:33

I had flu earlier this year. I couldn't have cared less if Tom Hardy was at the foot of the bed wearing a suit made of £50 notes, never mind one in the bloody garden.

I work in a hospital. I know a Dr who came into work feeling ill. He had flu. He was tested, and he definitely had it.

OhTheRoses · 25/09/2016 12:46

treaclesoda that's disgraceful - although I can see how working up the disciplinary chain: first, second, third warning to hearing deals with naughty absences effectively (they can't sack you without very good reason for unrelated absences) I don't see how it engenders a motivated workforce.

It should be done on a case by case basis. What you describe I, Imo, poor practice and indefensible in front of a tribunal. There is also the issue of references which ask if there are any live disciplinaries on record - they would have to say yes and that would put you at a disadvantage.

If I were in an HR senior role at your organisation I'd want that policy change. If I was asked to implement it as a practitioner, I'd resign.

Did i just read right, someone claiming to be a Dr admits going to work with flu? When they know they'll be around newborns, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems...
As someone with a child with serious immune system issues, I'd go fucking batshit if I was sent in with ds to a sick dr.

Op I hope you're feeling better. If in doubt, take a day off. The one time I had flu I was asleep on the floor of my flat for a day before I realised I'd passed out. Could barely move. I'd woken that morning with this impending sense of doom. Made my way to work (it was on my way home from boyfriends house) told them I'd not be in later that day and almost would up being fired cause I was Mia for I think 5days, hallucinations the works. Took me over a month to recover.

Lovelybunchofcocopops · 25/09/2016 13:07

You'd never make it to work if you had flu. You would struggle to get out of bed, let alone get dressed and go to work.

Don't go into work if you have anything contagious, it just spreads it round more than is nessecary. Heavy cold and d&v bugs are a no-no in my book.

iklboo · 25/09/2016 13:23

We have a 'disciplinary' after 10 days suck on a rolling 12 months, but it's a discussion first - a why, what, anything we can do to support etc. If it's just a bunch of single days or twos/threes here & there with minor illnesses you might get a note on your file to try not to be off sick in next 12 months on review. If it's something long term there's now a different policy system.

As an immunosuppressed individual, I HATE when people come into work sick as it means I have to go home. For me it's gastro stuff especially, despite having several memos going round at my work people still insist on coming in when they've been up all night vomiting out both ends!

Colds and sinus infections etc fair enough, but if you suspect you have the flu/bad infection then please don't struggle on into work just to make a show of how brave/committed you are.

I also hate the working culture for forcing people to attempt to do just the above, no one should be penalised for being sensible and staying at home.

Last time someone came in sick I spent 2 weeks in hospital after catching their gastro bug.

And as to the mns saying you can't have the flu and be online... YABU.

Middleoftheroad · 25/09/2016 14:29

I've only had flu once. I didn't even have strength see my kids open their Xmas pressies in my bedroom or lift my head off pillow. It was 10 days of hell. So I would not go in.

Currently got sore throat etc but go in with that.

coffeemachine · 25/09/2016 15:01

i was in the past at home with proper flu and D&V.
Other than that I always try to go in even if I have a temperature and feeling really ill.I know it's not ideal but I don't get sick pay (other than SSP) and I simply cannot afford it.

treaclesoda · 25/09/2016 15:27

Ohtheroses I no longer work for that company. HR there were very proud of their policy, at the time, they said it helped productivity, because people needed a positive attitude and staying healthy was all about believing in yourself. But it was a huge company with a policy of bullying and petty box ticking, from the top to the bottom, so it fitted well with the company culture.

The day I resigned was the happiest day of my life. Happier than my wedding, my graduation, giving birth, any of it. It's stands out as the highlight of my life to date.
